For some reason the link in the article takes you to the 2020 IPA awards.

I had to do some digging but here's the 2021 "World's Best Dark Beer" list.

Spoiler: Apparently it's a Quadrupel from Taxman called Qualified.

I said I stopped. I left the kicker for everyone else to read (choke on?).
    The title *is* singular.

I haven’t tasted this beer. From the above link (with emphasis in bold by me):

    “World's Best Dark Beer

World's Best Dark Belgian Style Strong

    Taxman Brewing Company

    Qualified

    United States

"Dark brown in colour with a nice tanned head and good retention. Sweet smokiness and sherry on the nose. Sweet and chewy on the palate with spicy complex notes and lots of alcoholic heat, lingering bitter finish.”

Hmm? The bolded parts do not sound inviting to me.

Did you pick up “lots of alcoholic heat”?

Did you find the finish to be lingering and bitter?

    Cheers!

I didn’t actually. It has a warming affect due to the ABV but it was not off putting to me whatsoever. As far as bitterness, I didn’t find much in this beer in particular. Very balanced, very malty. I really enjoyed it and would drink again any day.

FWIW Taxman's website lists Qualified as having only 20 IBUs.

    Wow, that list is hilarious!

Amongst my favorites, in addition to the 55th ranked Quad on BA being named the best dark beer in the world, are the “worlds best” English Mild being from Japan, and the “worlds best” Belgian Dubbel being from Germany.

Taxman qualified is a solid belgian quad as are their other belgian offerings, but it is by no means the darkest beer in the world. $6.00 for a four pack is pretty nice.

Read that this morning. Always good to get the day started reading some really funny shit like that article. I had the feeling it was written by someone who not only wasn't a beer drinker, but didn't know what beer is.

TIL a brewery in Taiwan makes an outstanding barleywine. I've lived there. The climate is semi-tropical. That strikes me as an odd combination.

The list should read Best Dark Ales, right?
