I'm going to be in Germany in June. Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Dresden, and Berlin. What are the spots I absolutely shouldn't miss?

If this a beer trip, (which I assume it is by you posting on this site), I would squeeze in a visit to Bamberg.

Bamberg is such a fabulous old world beer town!
    Enjoy your trip!

head north to Forchheim and the Kellerwald. Then further north to Bamberg. In Nürnberg, I'd say find a Landbierparadies and drink there.

There's not a lot in Frankfurt, but pick up some craft brews at Naiv which is just down the street from the cathedral. They have a restaurant side as well with some good beers on tap.

In Nürnberg I'd say hit the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof for the famous Nürnberger Rotbier. That's not far from a small bar/bottleshop called the Wanderer just up the hill by the Albrecht Dürer Haus, and if I recall correctly, just across the street from Hütt'n which has some decent beers and good food (if you go there sit inside, it's much cooler than sitting outside and watching the people go by unless it's super slow). These are all, literally just a few steps away from each other. I thought that I'd heard that Barfüßer is closed, but if not that's at least worth the few steps down to try their beer (don't eat there). Then there's Landbierparadies with a few different locations but they're not right in the thick of it.

In Dresden I'd cross the Elbe and head northeast up the hill to the Brauhaus am Waldschlösschen which has a beautiful patio that overlooks the city, and the famous Dresdner Molkerei Gebrüder Pfund is on the way up. It's touristy, but it is beautiful and something to see. Cross the bridge and at the roundabout take the bus up the hill and then walk down to Pfund and catch the bus there headed back. On the way back into town you can hit two or three of the Watzke locations depending on what time you're there, but regardless, it's a pleasant walk. If you're pressed for time hit the one south of the river near the train sation.

Berlin is far too complicated now to even make suggestions as it depends on what you're into beer-wise, what kind of experience you're looking for, and where you're staying. I've experienced Berlin over several years so it's hard to make suggestions because I've seen so much and you lose that excitement of the first visit. It's also such a big city that you really need to focus on where you're staying, how you're getting around, and how long that will take. If I was going back I'd want to revisit the Schneeule Salon (Berliner Weisse but with many twists), even if to just pick up some beers for take-away, and the BRLO BRWHOUSE (but not for the food). I might or might not go back to KaDeWe for shopping and a slow poured Czech Pils but BRLO now has a chicken and beer stand there. If I had the time to chill I'd hit the Prater Biergarten but there are only a few beers on tap and I don't think their wurst are that good. BraufactuM am Hausvogteiplatz is a good stop, and not too far from Brauhaus Georgbräu, and very close to both Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt and Erdinger am Gendarmenmarkt. Oh, and then there's the Brauhaus Spandau but that's out of the way and mainly because I just love the architecture and design; there are only two beers available and the food isn't great.

Agreed on Naiv if it's still there. I'm there from time to time, maybe once a year on average, and tend to end up in one of the apfelwein (Ebbelwei) places around Sachsenhausen area when I'm looking for olde worlde character. I'd struggle to pick a best one. (It wasn't the Wagner.) Ask locals or do some Googling.

BTW am plotting my own pilgrimage to Bamberg in June, fingers crossed it comes together... Have been through the region a couple times but never got to go!

But I read OP as asking for places in the named cities rather than adding to the itinerary — maybe a trip without the needed flexibility?

Personally, I am a fan of Bamberg for the beer. They have several new breweries and, of course, the old standards. My recommendation: stay at the Spezial brewery guesthouse if you can, or else across the street at the Faessla. Just down the street is the new brewpub "Landwinkl" which I hope to try next week if I can get away. Try the beer at the Spezial and then go to the Schlenkerla across the two bridges and into the old town. The city also offers info on the breweries at the tourist info office - get it! Bad Staffelstein is just up the road and has 10 or so breweries in the area of the town as well. Forchheim is a few klicks south and has a great set of breweries, although I always get distracted by Bamberg and never get there. Munich is ok, with a few old standards, but I am a Frankenbier fan myself. By the way, if you are driving and can go to Darmstadt area just south of Frankfurt international airport, go to the Maruhn Getraenkemarkt - they claim to be the biggest bier market in the world! Great selection!

In Frankfurt I'd probably go for a...you might guess it.....Bitburger Pils at "Zum Bitburger"...not a local beer, but Frankfurt ain't a great beer town (i.e. avoid big local breweries). Then head off to the Sachsenhausen area and visit "Zum Gemalten Haus" or "Apfelwein Wagner", two of the old-school Frankfurt Äppelwoi (apple wine) pubs......get a nice pork based dinner of your liking (maybe try something with "Green Sauce") and wash it down with Äppelwoi.....the second glass tastes better than the first.....you will love it towards the end of the night....
If you want to focus on local beers, then check out Ginnheimer Wirtshaus. They have some nice local brews and good food in a lovely location. But it's not really city centre.....

I can totally agree here - Apfelwein in Frankfurt (I would say it’s a „must do“ as its part of the local culture like beer in Bamberg). And Bamberg (and / or surroundings) should be on your list as well.
Do you have the days already when you plan to be where?

If you´re heading to the south part of germany - to the wonderful black forest - you shouldn´t miss the family owned brewery Waldhaus. www.waldhaus-bier.de
Waldhaus won more than 900 awards for their beers. "World´s best Pilsner", "World´s best unfiltered", "World´s best dark Lager" and many more. Very nice an yummy brewery inn.

I live in Berlin and here are a few places I believe are worth visiting if you're looking for good beers:
    - Protokoll Berlin: https://g.page/protokollberlin?share
    - Muted Horn: https://g.page/themutedhorn?share
    - Biererei Bar & Vintage Cellar: https://g.page/bierereibar?share
    - Mikkeller Berlin: https://goo.gl/maps/x9aKXwDY2shhynfu6
    - Braugier: https://goo.gl/maps/vVRiWDHL2F65wLhR7

If you're looking for something more "authentic" and touristic, I recommend to go to the following beergarten:
    - Pratergarten: https://goo.gl/maps/1fZGhRUzzcfMuNf86
    - Cafe am neuen see: https://goo.gl/maps/RH7LbYBAj6VsGU8L6
    - BRLO: https://g.page/brlo-brwhouse?share

Let me know if you have any questions about Berlin  Happy to help!

Yes....I know....sounds wrong, but a quick one with some finger food does work for me there. I usually would not go for Bitburger either....but main thing to keep in mind is to avoid anything from the local Binding brewery ;-)

If you can work it in, absolutely hit Bamberg. In general, don't expect a lot of choices for kiddie menus and soft drinks if you are traveling with non-beerdrinking family members.

Yes as stated in the thread Frankfurt is not a great beer town, but what it does have is a spectacular atmosphere at the local football team's stadium. If you can manage a ticket to see Eintracht Frankfurt you won't regret it, soccer fan or not.
So on beer, check out Zwolf Aposteln http://www.12aposteln-frankfurt.de/
Great old world with traditional food and house brewed lager. Also, Margarete in the old town is nice as well. Look for Frankfurter Helles, one of only a few locally made beers - good stuff. This might help if you can access...https://www.ft.com/content/86b660d2-1cd7-11ea-9186-7348c2f183af
Have fun and go and see the Schwarz-Weiss!

As you will be in Nurnberg and Frankfurt you should plan to stop by in 71229 Leonberg (close to Stuttgart). There will be opening a new modern Brewery in end of May, they will have different handcrafted beers on tap, great food and relaxing ambience.

The location is direct at the train station, great connection to come and go there. The building is an old freight depot and being fully renovated at the moment.

The name is BROW. - modern Brewery

This will be a MUST GO for every beer lover in the future

If it's not open yet, how do you know the food is great? Are you involved in the operation?

Brewdog bar Frankfurt is a nice place to have a few beers.
BrauStil (Oeder Weg 57, Frankfurt) nice micro-brewery and pub build inside a former fuel-station
The Bierothek is a Bottleshop at Skyline Plaza Frankfurt, grab a few bottles and head down to the river banks for a picknick. Same counts for naiiv Bar/restaurant & Bottle shop, that ist much closer to the River Main

    Wir Komplizen bar/restaurant (wir-komplizen.de)

Camba Bavaria Tap House Frankfurt (taphousefrankfurt.com)

They don't have a brewpub or something alike, but if you contact Dominik and Joachim from Flügge brewery you may Probably swing by for a visit of their small brewery where the do a lot of fruit/sour/funky beers absolutely worth trying if you're into that styles (not to mention the adorable artsy cans and Bottles they sell their brews in.

If you don't mind heading a bit out of town then I'd suggest a 30 min train commute to mainz to visit KuehnKunzRosen brewery (in walking distance to trainstation "römisches theater") and/or Eulchen Brewery (not that far from MZ main Station)

We also founded a small homerewers-club in Rhein-Main-area the "Brausportgruppe" depending on the time of your visit, your're welcome to attend to one of our club meetings if just happens to be at the same time coincidentally.
For more information Just write a short Email to: [email protected] and say Markus Pasel (that's me) told you to do so.

    Greetings

The locals I worked with called the biers from the big Frankfurt breweries as " dishwater".

Edit this was 23 years back.
