I had one opportunity to buy fresh Tipopils but at $20 a pack I passed on it. I wish I hadn't...

Quite the description from the website. Does anyone know what gives it the banana aroma? "It has an inviting aroma of malt, fresh hops, banana and yeast." Usually I associate that with a belgian yeast but it says it uses a german bottom fermenting yeast. Also, later on it gives a completely different aroma description and then it claims it "tickles your mucous membrane." I dont believe I've ever had my mucous membrane tickled, so I'd try it if I stumble upon it.

I recall it being about $20-24 per four pack...of 11.2 oz. cans.

Sounds to me like a hefeweizen yeast that sinks.

This has been on my list a very long time. I very much enjoyed the recent hoppy pils trend. I think it was 8 and sand in Nj or bonesaw did a hoppy “Italian” pils but the OG I’ve been waiting

I discussed this beer in a past New Beer Sunday. I personally did not pick up any banana flavors in those beers. Below is a snippet from my post:

    “Aroma:

A pleasant combination of bready Pilsner malt and floral/citrusy (lemon-like) hop aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose. The first few sips are a tasty combination of bready Pilsner malt flavor & floral/citrusy hop flavors. As the beer warms/open ups another flavor profile presents itself: a herbal flavor from the hops (still accompanied by bready Pilsner malt). Over time this is almost like two beers in one. There is a moderate bitterness throughout.”

As regards the verbiage "tickles your mucous membrane.", I did not perceive that in my beers.

The has been some discussion about price. Back in 2018 I paid $23+ for a four-pack of 12 ounce cans.

A bit of a backstory about this purchase. I asked the manager of my local Retail Beer Distributor if he could special order Tipopils since he didn’t normally carry it. It took him a while to get it but he gave me a call when it came in. As I was at the cashier station to pay for the four-pack he saw the expression on my face when he rang it up and said $23.xx and stated: “You don’t have to buy it”. I actually thought about putting the credit card back in my wallet but after what I put him through to get this as a special order I purchased that one four-pack. Tipopils is an excellent beer but it is not worth that price IMO.

Needless to say but I did the same back in 2018.

One difference worth mentioning is that 4 years ago the Tipopils available in the US was transported in a tank and then dry hopped in the US prior to packaging (i.e., canning). The contemporary Tipopils is dry hopped in Italy and then bottled. And the bottles are transported via ship across the Atlantic through a long supply chain (Brewery -> European port/warehouse -> ship -> US customs warehouse -> B. United -> Wholesale Distributor -> your retailer. I would very strongly recommend that you only buy your bottles (four-pack?) if they are fresh (i.e., only a couple/few months old). Otherwise you will be paying BIG bucks for a stale/abused product.

    Cheers!

Not atypical of many of the smaller brands in the B. United portfolio.

I was wondering if the law changed or if the packaging methods for export changed. Thanks for providing the answer to my unasked question. Where did you get this info?

Thanks for the info Jack. This is a reason why I’ve not purchased tannen zapfle (? Spelling) in a long time. I love it. But for the price not worth the dating

If this ever shows up in Seattle I'd love to try it. Italian Pilsners have been pretty popular with local breweries here the last couple years and this is also always referenced as the inspiration.

    Chris,

It is an Italian law issue:

“Birrificio Italiano partners with the importer B. United to bring some beers to the United States. Unfortunately, Tipopils is no longer among them. Previously, the importer brought Tipopils over with its fleet of refrigerated bulk tanks. They would dry hop it in the tanks, package it in Connecticut, then send it around the country. Unfortunately, new Italian rules currently prevent beer from being exported that way.”

    Cheers!

The press release mentions “kegs and bottles”, to the best of my knowledge B. United doesn't do any post-import bottling, just canning.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear Jack. I knew about the law and was curious what changed that caused the beer to be exported again. It's possible the brewers managed to have the law changed. Where did you hear that they are exporting finished beer now?

I simply went to the link provided above (copied again below). You can see the beer packaged in funny looking bottles:

    http://www.bunitedint.com/information/brands/description/141/

And for those BAs discussing the high prices of this beer, take note that these 'new' beers are in 11.2 ounce bottles. You get to pay lots of money for less product. :grimacing:

    Cheers!

P.S. As regards the availability of the Tipopils bottles, below is from the B. United website:

    24 x 11.2oz / 330.0mL Bottle(s) Case 8053800160018 Inbound Jan. 10, 2022

Hopefully those bottles will not be sitting on the ship waiting weeks to offload at the US port (NYC?).
