Good afternoon, BAs! We've still got power, but I'm still drinking like we might lose it any time. :stuck_out_tongue:

@CreightonSM I'm more into Attila-era Mayhem. Yes, I realize De Mysteriis also featured Attila, but it was very much a Dead/Euronymous/Necrobutcher production at the time (along with Varg). Definitely mad respect for that era and all that Mayhem meant to the scene, but I think they became a legitimately better band in the years following. :grinning:

This 20°F weather is for the birds. I'm ready for summer. Had a sudden craving for some Trop. Creature Comforts iconic Tropicalia IPA. This and New Realm Hazy Like a Fox IPA are my two favorites. Trop is one of those IPAs that you can smell six feet away when you pop the top. 16 oz can is perfect. Cheers!

Snow picture for @SawDog505. The frozen tundra of Green Bay, WI. This is the land where people who live here started playing way less good football each January than people who only know tropical climates. As I documented.

I think it is a Van Halen situation. I like all three eras for Mayhem. It can only have happened the way it happened. Attila and Maniac both do each other's material well live. Only they could have kept the throne warm, exactly when they did. Dead lead the path, Maniac held it down the way that was required, but Atilla, Hellhammer, and Necrobutcher tie the past to the present perfectly. They understand Euronymous' vision. Here is footage of Norwegian black metal all-stars paying respect.

One more NA before heading out. Untitled Art Florida Weiss. It's a carbonated fruit smoothie. It's not a beer. And I'm fine with that.:sunglasses:

I'm starting off today with one I've been really excited about, Founders KBS. I was not disappointed, this beer is fantastic. Very flavorful and nuanced. There's chocolate, coffee, bourbon and vanilla all layered in there. I rated it 4.51 which is just a tick below its BA average of 4.60.

Noone in Europe does TIPAs like Cloudwater, amazing stuff.

Twelve Yellow Legs, a NE TIPA from English brewery Cloudwater (10%).

A very impressive TIPA with intense and vibrant hop notes, but no overbearing booziness or sweetness at all. Strata and Motueka are two of my favorite hops and they really show through here in all their glory.

I totally agree: different eras, but all done well. Attila is such an incredible vocalist that I truly doubt that anyone else could cross the eras as deftly. His vocals aren't something Dead could have ever approached (in terms of skill, depth, and breadth), but he can also evoke the Dead and Maniac eras, without being a perfect copy - it's his take on it, but it works.

I prefer Attila-era Mayhem, but part of the reason is that Mayhem mit Attila is still Mayhem, all the way back into the '80s. Not many other bands can claim such an honest yet legitimate Renaissance.

Edit: @GreenBayBA I think the VH reference is super appropriate. Many songs which we consider "classic" VH were under the Hagar years, and many of the "This is too poppy and lame!" songs came while DLR was still the vocalist. It turns out that under the Van Halen brothers, they had a lean toward pop-rock that had nothing to do with whomever was singing at the time. And yet, it all fucking worked.

Fortunately, there was a Dead version of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas demoed, so we know for sure the difference. Some days one version is better than the other. I debated this endlessly at black metal bars in Oslo, Norway, AFTER bar time, with a select few people who know the band personally. I remember the details of that as well as I will with Minnesota BAs at my bottle share/Mayhem concert in about two months!
