Unless they are Bomb Cyclones, now that is some made up shit. Lived over 40-50 years in the country without hearing that term.

My appreciation for that beer approaches the irrational. I absolutely LOVE that beer. I haven't hat it in like 5 years, and I don't recall the ABV being above 10% (my recollection is the ABV was around 7% the last time I had it 5 years ago) so it would be interesting to see how it's evolved.

I miss a lot of things about Minnesota, and having access to Schell's beers is one of those things. What a fantastic brewery, IMHO.

    But wait, there’s more!

I have heard several meteorologists today call this winter storm a Bombogenesis.

What will they think of next!?!

    Cheers!

    @JackHorzempa

Well, human beings existed for hundreds of thousands of years without hearing of the terms dinosaurs, plate tectonics, evolution, or black holes.

Just because "you" haven't heard of it has nothing to do with whether or not it's real. Reality and history don't give the slightest shit about your personal perspective.

That said: yeah, the modern prevalence of "bomb cyclones" and "polar vortices" (et al!) has me questioning whether or not we are simply better at identifying these phenomena, or have expanded the definition to include weather conditions which we previously simply considered harsh, without those "extreme" terms.

Or perhaps, as almost most often seems to be the case, the answer sits firmly in between the two extremes.

Verboten Brewing and Barrel Project -- Not A Speck Of Light
    Barrel aged imperial stout
13.5% ABV; pouring temperature: 45 °F; canning data: unknown

    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Ink black body with thin, wispy, light brown sworls of tannish streaks of foam; a few silky legs of foam streak down the inside of the glass. Nice flat sweetness with touches of roasted grain and a faint boozy undercurrent; cocoa. Rich flavors; deep milk chocolate and mild grain char; initially subtle bourbon taste that grows in intensity towards the finish. Chewy body; rich and thick on the palate; hefty residual sugar presence coats the tongue; alcohol heat simmers beneath the sweetness.

This is my favorite of the three 'Not A Speck of Light ' beers offered from Verboten. It's a heavy hitting beer. I don't see any need to add things like cinnamon or mocha like the other varieties do. The relative simplicity of an imperial American stout with some judicious bourbon barrel aging is wondrous enough.

Pouring temperature: 45 °F; canning data: unknown

    ----------------

...I had picked up a can of this earlier and then wound up sending it to @jzeilinger. I was a bit heart-broken because the store that carried it (and it's two flavored variants) no longer carried it. However, a stop at another favorite beer emporium of mine actually has several cans of this left, so all is good...

...and, yes, I checked my scores for the other two variants to see if my review was true (in that I like this version best of all), and it is. I rated the mocha version an overall 3.89 and the coconut cinnamon as a 3.85. Sometimes less is more...

12oz can no date into a pint glass.
L: Pours a lightly hazed straw gold with an eggshell white 1" semi-creamy head w/OK retention. Good carbonation and good even lacing and banding.
S: Citrusy, light pine, pineapple, very light bread.
T: Light citrus, soft pine, lemon, orange rind. No malt profile noticed. Citrus zest lingers and it is lightly fruity.
F: Med-light bodied moderately drying mouthfeel with a med-fast finish.
O: A pleasant tasting hop frwd session IPA that is overall simple, fairly light and easy drinking. It is good in it's style.

I don't know if the Blizzard of '78 was a "bomb cyclone," but here in Northern Indiana (where we are roughly 3 hours from Canada so we know how to deal with snow), the 44" of snow that started to fall on January 25th, 1978 (the night I saw my first concert: Nazareth) messed our city up for a month:

    • School was cancelled for two weeks - TWO WEEKS!!!!!
    • The paper wasn't published for four days, I was a paperboy - when they did publish, they couldn't get to my house to drop the papers, so I had to walk nearly 1/4 mile to retrieve, then walk back the 1/4 mile to my route (80 customers). What was normally a 20-minute exercise took nearly 3 hours.
    • There was so much snow, plowing didn't help much, so the city had to bring in front-end loaders and dump trucks to haul the snow out.
    • The snow mountains in the shopping center parking lot were EPIC - and stuck around until early April. We had MASSIVE "King of the Hill" wars.
    • When the schools finally did open, the energy crisis was so acute that the school day was shortened from 8 am - 3 pm to 9 am - 2 pm. For this freshman in HS, that was like the greatest thing EVER.

Here's some pics from various sources:

Might as well have the Westvleteren 8 after I fucked up with the 12, still pisses me off...

Brouwerij De Sint-Sixtusabdij van Westvleteren - Trappist Westvleteren 8

    Belgian Dubbel, from Belgium (8%).

Pours a deep, dark brown coloration with a medium, fluffy, lasting head. Smells of slightly roasted, bready, caramel malt and estery fruit and spice, with just a hint of dark fruit and chocolate also coming through.

Taste is an excellent balance of slightly roasted, bready, caramel malt, chocolate and dark and estery fruit and spice, with notes of raisin, fig, banana, clove and allspice, as well as hints of licorice and herbal, bitter hops. Finishes bittersweet, with notes of estery fruity and spice lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

This actually feels very close to their Quadrupel for me, except maybe being not quite as rich, a little more carbonated and just a tad more roasted and bitter. For my personal taste, I probaly prefer it, to be honest. Still, without being quite worth its secondary price, this makes for a very impressive Dubbel that just stands slightly above offering such as Westmalle, St. Bernadus and Chimay due to its richness, balance and above all body and mouthfeel, with the estery character really standing out here.

Currently listening to: Siouxsie and the Banshees: Hong Kong Garden.

Chilling with the nephews in the warm Vegas sun, teaching them a bit about beer. Hoping my return flight is cancelled for a few more bonus days. Brother picked up the last four pack before I arrived. Much obliged!

    Beachwood Mega Melrose

Can Notes: 16 oz can, 9.5% ABV 100+ IBUs. Malt: American 2-Row. Hops: Simcoe, Amarillo. Brewer and canned 12/10/21 by Beachwood Brewing, Huntington Beach, California.

Mega Melrose Double India Pale Ale. We took Beachwood’s original Melrose IPA and doubled up on all the hoppy goodness!

Appearance: Golden crystal clear base, medium to heavy persistent carbonation, very rich creamy and long slashing head leaves extremely generous lacing. Absolutely gorgeous beer. 5.0

    Aroma:
Strong, tropical fruit leads, pineapple, tangerine, pine, citrus, grapefruit. 4.25

    Taste:
Consistent with aroma but even stronger. Pine leads, a little dank, grapefruit follows, chalky tropical fruit, mango, tangerine. More powerful and sweeter than regular Melrose, but well balanced and crafted. Many times double / triple IPAs take away from what I enjoy with the single. This hits very well stronger, flavor still great. Well executed. 4.5

    Mouthfeel:
Dry, slightly bitter, sweet fruit bursts in between. Drinks much easier than the high abv, at least halfway through of this pint. A little pithy and chalky. Clean easy finish. 4.5

    Overall:
High expectations coming in with Melrose one of my all time favorites, Mega sure fit the bill, did not overwhelm in terms of alcohol or sweetness like many in this genre do. Overall very pleased and highly recommend, yet another reason why Beachwood remains my favorite LA area brewery. 4.75

Not sure where we are headed tonight, but definitely will pull at least one or more new ones later this weekend.

    Ottakringer Vienna Lager

This is a favorite lager style, but I don't think that I have had a real Vienna Lager until now.
Nice smooth mouth feel from the wheat. Great malt/hop balance with light caramel and hop flavors. This can may have had some age, but was had no discernible flaws.

Good Times Made Here -- American Ale

Light amber body, crystal clear; excellent carbonation presence; huge, billowy head, white and semi-creamy; Very floral and fruity nose; mild citrus; peach with a touch of orange; berry and cantaloupe. Very pleasant taste; light, fruity sweetness; suggestion of honey; low-key bitterness. Medium body; a little thin; mild, gentle sweet mouthfeel; a bit of dryness near the finish.

This beer delivers some well rounded flavor to the palate. The aroma, in particular, is powerful and pleasing.

    --------------------

...technically, my second time drinking the beer, but the first time around (this past Thursday), neither the brewery nor the beer were part of the BA database, but now that that has been remedied...

...anyway, an effort between Scott Eastwood and others to produce a relatively low-cost, American made series of beer (they also have a lager and an IPA in the portfolio). From what I can gather, this is a Colorado made beer, likely brewed by Aspen Brewing Co. (although I've seen another report that there may be a Denver brewing connection)...regardless, I find the beer enjoyable. I do miss Boston Beer Co.'s 'Boston Ale', and this beer doesn't equate to that beer, but I find it quite delicious overall. I'll certainly look into the lager and IPA to see how those stack up with the businesses' beer philosophy...

This has the Tree House DIPA look, with a turbid pineapple colored body, perched beneath a creamy white head. Beautiful hazy. The nose has HUGE mango notes - when I popped the top on the can, it was like a ripe mango exploded in my kitchen - as well as ripe tangerine, pineapple, and a distinct coconut aroma (thank you, Sabro hops!).

The mango and tangerine are the dominant flavors, but that coconut note is what makes this beer for me, providing an exotic flavor to balance the citrus.

The mouthfeel is medium, a little creamy, and has some bite. Delicious stuff from a world class brewery.

Jack, the answer with rose hips is usually " Not much". Keep in mind that many of our familiar fruits are in the rose family : apples, pears, raspberries & relatives, almonds & the other stone fruits. Don't know about that beer, but when rose hips are detectable, expect a vague mix of plum & raspberry , with maybe some sweet cherry. Currants ? Dried cherry, white grape, something plum-ish, but quite tart.

I've had Snickerdoodle coffee, but didn't realize it was based on something other than Snickers bars .

    Two weeks? A month?!!! :dizzy_face::thinking_face:
    Amateurs!

It happens more frequently now , & nobody wants to get the blame for not being able to handle it, so it tends not be so disruptive, despite happening more often. Of course there's always some grumbling that we're over-prepared (spending too much $) .....until it happens , that is. Nobody is complains when their road/street gets cleared quickly , eh?
Had a 41-44" dump last winter . I got my mail the next day . :+1:

Noreaster is when the storm moves counterclockwise, & the wind comes from the northeast. Yeah, some of the weather readers don't seem to understand .
I just looked at the radar again, & the back side has the typical counterclockwise motion, from the northeast. The cold air from the NW seems to be preventing the full scale of that, so a 1/2-nor'easter? :stuck_out_tongue:

You'll be happy to know I'll be back later with TH's Bomb Cyclone.

basically a vanilla sugar cookie with cinnamon. So. When @Roguer describes his treehouse stout, the appropriate vanilla and cinnamon notes are correct for that style
