I was actually picking on them because they don't look old enough to drink! Couls easily be Wisconsin where there's a law that a minor can drink at the bar (maybe beer only?)... with their parents.

And I'm pretty sure the girl in the middle is the designated driver.

Hey, isn't the guy on the far right Tobey Maguire?

Seems to me that you posted this pic once before and said that you are one of the drinkers in the group. Is that a pack of Camels in your shirt pocket?

What do you say to the USPS clerk when she asks where she can buy Rug's BBQ Sauce & Rubs? :sunglasses:

Jaming out the door for work so didn't read them all but for me - "beer has a season. Stouts in winter, pilsner in summer"

Bleh - good beer is good beer, my tongue can't read a calendar. Drink what you like, when you like.

As I've said before - bring on the 4th of July RIS

Never, ever heard of these two styles being considered seasonal until the geekdom became prominent. Both styles are available year-round and I've enjoyed them both year-round.

Can't imagine walking into Davy Byrne's to order a Guinness and being told it's out of season.

Having done verticals with various big stouts, I can't recall a time that it wasn't best fresh and got worse with age in every case.

Just had a 2018 BCBS yesterday after enjoying 2020 and 2021s recently and it was notably "worse" compared with oxidation and lost its glorious flavor profile.

At bottle shares when people crack open years old beers, regardless of what it is, the fresh ones always taste better to me. Only one I can recall being better was CBS with about a year on it, but then 2 year start dropping off flavor wise.

I'll take fresh for any style, except maybe traditional wild sours and such.

I have similar experiences to @invertalon when it comes to aging beers. Aged stouts at about a year don't seem too damaged by the time, however as they get past that point I have had beers that went from glorious to ho hum and even outright awful. Case and point, I had an uncle Jacob's from avery that had roughly 5 years on it, and when poured it wasn't black. You could literally see the black sludge in the bottom of the bottle. This was the first time I had seen this. Ever. But it is one example of how age did no favors to that beer. Barleywines seem to handle age the best, but even then they can suffer as well.

I'll agree with this, whether or not a pro-tip is good really depends on what you want out of the experience. For example: People say with bottled homebrew (and beer in general) that when not refrigerated it should be stored in a cool dark place, but that's assuming you don't want sunlight to impact the beer. All I homebrew is saison, I brew it in green bottles, and store it in an a windowsill for a month until carbed, on its side, I want the sun impact, I want the cork impact, if I didn't, yes bad idea, but I do. I've got my "Cellar" in the pantry, because I don't want skunky st. bernardus etc. So again, it depends on what one is going for.

Interesting, what does the sun do for saison?

Well, in the green bottles, the sun skunks the beer and gives it that musty aroma that I've always loved in my favorite saisons. To me, it's part of what completes the picture, makes it feel a bit more authentic to the beers I enjoy. Those green bottles don't protect from the sun as well, so when exposed to the sun for prolonged periods, the hop oils decay and that aroma is created. It'll work with any beer, but to me, it is desirable with saison where it isn't other places.

I know this has often been discussed, but I've never heard any solid answers; do suppose the original brewmaster of those skunky commercial Saisons actually wanted them to develop (what is almost universally considered) off characters?

Haven't encountered that one yet but almost always deal with the same woman when shipping out. If she ever asks I'll just give her some artisanal BBQ sauce and slap a fake label on it to keep her quiet

Considering all Saison Dupont bottles I buy now are in brown bottles, I would assume they didn't want their beers to be light struck any more.

For me personally, Saisons are best when they get their character from the yeast, malt and hops, not from being light struck, but I guess that is crazy talk now...

Can't really fault you on this since I do the same thing to reheat room temp coffee which drives my coffee aficionado son crazy

Our cheap drip coffee maker doesn't heat our coffee enough to survive the addition of cream, so 35 seconds in the micro remedies that.

But I didn't think the beer geeks would worry over hot coffee? :flushed::wink:

And now they are available in cans:

Have you had Saison Dupont from the cans yet?

FWIW, I too prefer my Saison beers to be non-skunked.

    Cheers!

Not yet, don't think I have seen those around me, will definitely pick some up when I do (assuming thats not a $30 4 pack ha, as much as I love Dupont their prices are getting really high).

I took a peek at the vendor website looking for the price of the glass. This BA discussion seems to have lasted longer than the subject product. A similar glass seems to be $17 for a glass! That price is a for a glass with the inscription, "Let's go Brandon". At least the vendor didn't make a similar spelling error. I wonder how many Brandons (Brandon's?) purchased this glass?

I 100% agree with you there.

I personally have stopped purchasing Saison Dupont due to the high prices. I am able to forgo here since I am a homebrewer and I brew a batch of Saison every year which lasts me throughout the year (those beers reach peak of flavor at around 6 months of bottle aging).

    Cheers!
