The first Barleywine was aged in a Woodford Reserve Malt Whiskey barrel for over 20 months, then finished in a combination of Weller and Blanton Bourbon casks for close to a year. The second Barleywine was first aged in an Armagnac puncheon for close to two year, then finished in a blend of Heaven Hill Rye and Sazerac Rye casks. Really liked this one a lot. Kane is local to me, and they’ve been releasing a ton of barleywines over the past year, all of which are excellent, but this may be the best.
Sweet! How's this one taste? Any beers it's comparable to? Super excited for this one but still waiting on the box.
I made it 4 days before opening this one, very proud of my restraint. Splitting this between me and my future self. Anyone else think if Artie and his earring when they hear Armagnac? So, this just amazing. The bourbon and rye barrels are prominent, but the brandy is there too. Rich, boozy raisin and some sort of dessert, maybe creme brulee? Mellow oak, leather, and tobacco at the finish. Heavy, ponderous this is.
It's like a fruit punch of liquor barrels going on. It's definitely an excellent barleywine- nails the sweetness, mouthfeel and alcohol flavors, but is so much more than that. One could attempt to argue that this crosses over into cocktail territory- I close my eyes and I woudln;t feel out of place if I open them and am suddenly in a smoky room drinking this from a high ball glass. This makes me want to buy a bear skin rug and leather recliner, install a fireplace , and just kick back swirling my snifter for eternity. So in summary, this is a terrible beer, don't even attempt to drink it. Instead put it up on the trade forums and I'll send you some Miller High Life.
I'm treating this like an in person beer fest, drink the stuff that looks best first in case it kicks (aka, the wife accidentally opens it).
Saved it for the end and it was well worth the wait (4 days.) Flavor bomb in every sip. Caramel, toffee, molasses... just keep naming brown sticky sweet substances. Woodford + Blanton's = Thank you Kane!!!

Really a wonderful beer. One of my favorite styles, this hit it out of the ballpark. Not sure it needed such a fussy combination of barrels but it worked. Great Barleywine profile with just the right amount of bourbon added. I want more.
Boom! One of the biggies I was looking forward to with this box and it absolutely delivered over and over again. Most barleywines struggle to balance the complexity of flavors and this one, with a lot of extra work through the aging process, could've gone that route but instead Kane absolutely nailed it. This is the right amount of sweet, sour, upfront flavor, lingering aftertaste, etc. Absolutely the best barleywine I have ever had. Loved this in every way.
This bad boy has already jumped to the #7 spot of all American Barleywines. I was already looking forward to this one, but now even more so!
Now that is damn impressive! I'm saving this one for last personally. Do you think the high ranking is skewed by the fact that the reviews are recent? I'm wondering if it will remain that way
It checks a lot of the high-ranking boxes. Hard to get, high ABV, lots of barrels, the only thing it lacks is wax. I had this the day after mother of all storms and it absolutely held its own. Damn fine barleywine.
The small sample size of 11 definitely makes it prone to fluctuation, but at a 4.70 average it currently carries the second-highest average rating of all ranked American Barleywines behind only ADWTD TO (4.76). Not sure if it will stay that high, but only time will tell!
Saved this one for my birthday, and kicked off the evening's drinking with it. As soon as I started pouring, barrel aroma filled the room. Drinks smooth and complex, with the ABV dangerously concealed - the barrel notes take center stage, but they have quite the supporting cast of brown sugar, toffee, chocolate, and raisin notes. The aftertaste lingers like a brown sugar based syrup that was stored in bourbon barrels. Definitely a good beer.
