Um, do we need to send some glassware to @MattOC?

I actually have lots of those (canning jars). I apologize for calling out Matt on his glassware. To each his own, it's just not what I would choose.

Ha, NO! That’s the last thing I need, but thank you. I’m sure I’m like many others; too much glassware that doesn’t even get used. A mason jar is perfectly suitable for a ba barleywine

Agreed, drink what you like served in what you like. Those mason jar lips are just to thick IMO. I think the only time I’ve used one of those for beer was at a Lagunitas night at a bar where they had Lagunitas branded mason jar glasses.

Idk, call me a snob, but aroma doesn't come through as much from a straight glass for me. Those snifters are part of the Rev experience :grinning:

Agreed, half the time I'm drinking BA barleywine from a rocks glass.

Straight jacket is an "everymans kind of barleywine" with that being said you need an "everyday man's kind of glass" to drink straight jacket out of! The fact that you have Ron Swanson on your avatar, I full agree with the glassware choice for straight jacket.

Figured I’d dig into these biggies as we’re being coated in ice out this way. Before anyone piles on, I didn’t have any thistle glasses handy for the scotch ale. Working with what I got. Cheers!

It doesn't feel like a real MattOC picture post without a bunch of bananas in the background. You're slacking on your produce today!

I was trying to figure out why you took two pictures of the same pour... then I noticed the cans! Nice work and happy Friday!

Was on my way this as I’ve given both about two hours and I’m headed to bed.

Heavy handed pours and GDB is just better looking beer in the glass. Much bigger, longer lasting head. Oatmeal froth looked so inviting. Both settle to minimal, no head.

Rev’s rep speaks for itself, but I think they do wonders with these styles and barrel aging is top notch.

For me, both sippers and I like to give beers this big time to open up regardless of format and I think it does wonders. Never boozy, but a wonderfully warming ABV and flavors really present themselves.

I thought GDB was great. Scotch ale is not a style I’m well versed in, but that long finish subtle peaty notes were certainly a draw and memorable for me.

VSOR was better and preferred. Spicy. Leather. Fruity. Sweet. Ticked a lot of boxes.

Was fortunate last summer to have a few drafts of VSOJ (and a can) and that remains top for me. Special. VSOR no slouch though.

Felt weird to jump right to VSOR as Ryeway made it’s way out here, but I never snagged a can. A buddy is going to pass one off to me so I can do a side by side.

A set of each are going off to my drinking buddies as I know they’ll love the styles and the beers. Excited to have some extras to continue to sit with them and maybe age a can of each.

Anybody do a VSOR vs. VSOJ side by side?

Interestingly, there is no actual scotch in a typical scotch ale and no peat was used. Rev apparently used a smoked malt for this batch of GDB to add a smoky dimension to the scotch ale that is not normally there, as a nod to actual scotch.

Thanks. Yeah, I understood that on the style after looking into it and Rev’s input on the beer. It was there in that long finish as I mentioned, but not overwhelmingly so, which is what I liked about it, as I’m not a fan of scotch and overly peaty flavors in my limited experience with it.

Anyone that has a VSOJ I'd be happy to

In the meantime, I'll definitely do a Ryeway v VSOR for extra decadence. I'm all about that rye.
