This is one I was really looking forward to and it delivered. Aptly named I'd say. 9 to go, hard to imagine one better than this.
Looks like everyone is saving this one but I couldn't wait anymore. Roasty but not overly. Not boozy. Not sweet but a caramel taste on the back end in the beginning. Tasty BA stout. This is what I miss of the Extreme Fests. I always need more barrel aged stouts in my life.
So my opinion is probably worthless on this beer as it is my first since prior to Christmas, but the first thought on the first sip was “Yes!” Much like Half Time Beverage it delivered. It’s lovely, layered and complex. I was not disappointed.
This is my 2nd beer from the box. Stouts & Porters are my favorite type of beer, especially liquor barrel aged ones. I was worried this would be too sweet, because some of the more recent stouts I've had over recent years with this description were overloaded with coconut and vanilla. This (thankfully) is not, BUT, I don't notice any bourbon/whiskey in this beer. If the can didn't say so, I would have thought it was just a regular hoppy/piney Russian Imperial Stout with coconut & coffee. And the coffee is subtle. I think it tastes almost the same as some regular coconut stouts I've had before. Good (4.0), but not as good as I hoped for (4.50-4.75).
Second out of the box. No point spending words on this one. It was exactly what It says on the can and exactly to style. Extreme Extreme Extreme! My favorite so far.
@Todd I don't know the aim you had for this one - if it perfectly met the mark, wound up a bit different, or evolved as the process progressed - but damn, it's a tasty, rich, and potent beer! https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-weekend-81.664977/page-2#post-7453371 In addition to rating/reviewing the Extreme Beer Box offerings, I'd like to extend an unofficial welcome to the New Beer Weekend thread for anyone else trying these out who'd like to share their thoughts.
This one grows on you. Initially I thought "meh" - nothing special here. But as it warmed to room temp (or perhaps as the 14% ABV gained traction on my reptilian brain stem) it improved considerably. Thoroughly enjoyable. Wish I had a bunch of these.
First one I happened to choose out of the box! It's really not as heavy as the name implies, although it is rich with a very interesting taste. It definitely had a boozy bourbon and coffee flavor, but I couldn't really taste the coconut or vanilla.
Definitely my favorite of night 1 of the tasting for me! Quite complex with a nice boozy spice that plays well with the sweeter chocolate and coconut notes. An absolute winner
This one's pretty fantastic! Second beer out of the box for me and definitely in my wheelhouse. The booziness and heat was pretty mild, so I'm guessing that this one didn't spend an enormous amount of time in barrels? But I'm okay with that! This beer is pretty balanced -- not too sweet, not too roasty, not too warm. And I was happy that I could pick out the adjuncts as the beer warmed. I'm a sucker for coconut, vanilla and mocha notes in stouts, and this one delivered.
Drank this room temp and found it reminded me a little of Deschutes' The Abyss. I could easily pick out both the coconut and coffee notes. Didn't get very much of the barrel aging, which disappointed me a little as I like BA stouts. Had quite a bit of hop bite on the backend to balance the sweetness. Not as "heavy"-feeling as Calf & Half was, a bit more subtlety to this one. I respect it, but I didn't love drinking this. Wouldn't regret having bought it for a tasting, and wouldn't buy it again.
Pour nice dark black. Strangely not much aroma. Big roasty coffee flavor with some sweetness. Not picking up much coconut, vanilla or barrel. Very enjoyable though.
4.17/5 rDev -0.7% look: 4.25 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 Tar black body, opaque; thin yet thick and densely creamy head, light tan color. Not a strong aroma (probably because of the cold pouring temperature); some roasted and charred grain with coffee; chocolate. Huge, beautiful taste; coconut, vanilla, milk chocolate and cocoa, whiskey undertone; slight coffee bitterness. Heavy mouthfeel; smooth, slick and chewy; big residual sugar presence; sweet mouthfeel offset with a slightly sharp bourbon heat. Had this one sitting out in the unheated garage, so it's pretty cold for such a big beer. I have a second can that I'll try at a later date. Even with a near-freezing pour temperature, the looks, taste, and feel can't be conquered. Simply a wonderful imperial stout with extras! Pouring temperature: 33.4 ℉; canning data: unknown --------------------------- Yes indeedy! This was one of the beers I was really looking forward to, and I'm not disappointed. The second can quite possibly can be bumped up in score when served in warmer conditions. Yes, out in the 'Fortress of Solitude' where the temperature is cold but one can smoke and booze it up, too. The beer is a great companion for these other vices. Plus, I roasted a bunch of poblano and red Fresno chili peppers about 45 minutes ago (they're about ready to be peeled), so this beer just seems to make that experience better, too. In fact, I have a bunch of Anaheim and jalapeño peppers to roast, too, so maybe I'll still be nursing this beer when I do those. Anyway, a fantastic imperial stout!
This is a solid imperial stout. I enjoyed it. I'm not sure it did a whole lot to separate or from other imperial stouts out there but it is good.
This was a good stout that just barely missed being a great one. That being said, I would happily drink it. The stout flavors were beautiful, particularly the coffee and the depth added through barrel aging. I think where it came up a tad short is in a bit of balance (or lack thereof) with the other flavors that remained very hidden. Had I not know there was vanilla or coconut, I don't think I would have figured out that they were there. So a bit more boost to those could've taken this to another level but, honestly, as everyone said, this is a good imperial stout.
I think this is the smoothest dark beer I've ever had. Stunning. Trying to get the QR code to work as I'm curious about the music but my phone won't scan it, anyone have a link?
Got it! I really like Mountain Top. The background piano brought these Secret of Mana tracks The Wind Never Ceases (climbing to see Sage Joch) and Leave Time for Love (the Mana Fortress) to mind for some reason.
Moderately sweet, vanilla and coconut in a coffee background. This was my 5th from the box and reminded me how great these selections are!
Really enjoyed this stout. Pours jet black. Wonderfully balanced tastes of vanilla, coffee, bourbon and some coconut.
