It blends blackberry, apricot, sweet cherry, vanilla, cinnamon, and graham cracker together to form just one of this monster’s many heads. Mortal is Fruited sours aren't for everyone, but if you appreciate what you're getting, they are amazing. That cinnamon puts this over the top. Wow
Having this one now. The flavors of what they say are there. My problem is I can't get past the acidity. I feel the need to rinse with water after every sip. I do like sours, this just is missing something in the way of balance to my personal tastes.
Trying this one tonight, 2nd one from the box. Pours a rich, viscous maroon, moderate head. Wow, loud aromas of graham cracker, berries and vanilla. The cinnamon is there and really provides another dimension. I want to eat this after a salty steak or pork chop. Taste is as stated- cherries, blackberry, vanilla and graham cracker/crumble mix. Definitely a dessert beer. As @SHU06Les stated, the acidic tendencies are very forward in this one, to the point where I might recommend a Tums afterward (for me maybe not for you). No off-putting flavors, though, enjoyable for what it is.
Super cool Hydra on the can... but, Anne of Green Gables anybody? ... Bit of a thick sour, texturally reminds me of a home made liquor without much straining. Has a bit of a holiday spice thing going for it, predominantly smelling of vanilla and heavy in the cinnamon notes leaving mouthfeel a little dry. Not getting any graham cracker. However, while drinking it, the flavors come together nicely with the low/medium carbonation. Blackberry, cherry and apricot seem to go great in a sour. Overall a hearty, holiday fruit pie tasting beer I am happy to say actually tasted like a sour. Not bad but thick in my opinion. ... you know (or do you know?) when Anne accidentally serves the Raspberry cordial to her friend? I imagine it tasted much like this. ‘I didn’t know raspberry cordial was so nice.” -Diana Barry
Split with my wife and reluctant mother, who was won over. I am really enamored with this one, kinda sorry I shared. The fruits are so vibrant, the sour is refreshing and not too acidic, and the graham cracker and vanilla put it over the top. Great stuff.
Deeeelish. I get a fruity smores vibe. Love the sweetness of the vanilla and Graham cracker and the fruitiness of the blackberry. One of the best in the box.
Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice murky dark pink/light red. No head. Nose is cherry, vanilla ice cream, rhubarb coated in sugar, apricots, peaches, and nice dark berries. Not really getting the cinnamon. Regardless, this nose is gorgeous. The taste is very fruity and sweet, but has a nice creamy texture. Lots of berries, apricots, vanilla, bread, chocolate, and marshmallow. Really nice. The fruit tastes very fresh - not fake in any way. Quite a different beer! Mouthfeel is, as mentioned, fairly creamy and thick. Very nice overall. look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25
I much prefer the amazing stouts that Mortalis creates. This is cloyingly sweet and thick. I do like the essence of graham cracker coming through.
Just got my box today. Not normally a fan of these types of dessert beers but this is very tasty. Like drinking a berry pie. Very distinct berry, vanilla and Graham cracker in nose and flavor.
TOTALLY funky and fun. A terrific fruited sour beer. The flavors are positively intense and blend together beautifully. Drinks a bit thick but, again, really well. It's sweetness is more muted than you would expect. The color is beautiful and really a terrific drink.
Great fruity thickness in the glass. Huge fruit bouquet in the aroma. Fantastic thick mouthfeel. Great flavors of fruit, vanilla & graham crackers. Well done.
Maybe my favorite so far. Love the thickness and the graham cracker really hits. A beautiful beer that I’ll be dreaming about. Yearning to try more of what Mortalis has to offer.
Starting to feel like an iconoclast after I liked the Funky Buddha beer everyone hated and now I don't care for this one everyone is liking. Appearance is a blackberry smoothie, completely opaque and thick, no head, leaving residue on the sides of the glass. Mouthfeel matches that. Nose is graham cracker, marshmallow, blueberry. Taste is everything written on the can, especially apricot, cinnamon, and graham cracker. I find myself wishing this was neither sour nor carbonated, because those two aspects are interfering with my mind's assumption that this is a "berry smoothie". The many heads of the hydra are not coming together for me. The one thing I really appreciate is the graham cracker flavor -- I've had a few other beers with graham cracker in them and it's never come through so clearly for me. Seems like Mortalis achieved what they wanted, but for me it's a pass.
Third beer. Definitely thick with fruit and sediment - not a bad thing. Tasted great! Lots of fruit with graham cracker finish. Gave me a little heartburn but didn't sense acid.
There is fruit, there is cinnamon, there is vanilla, there is graham cracker...what is going on here? In Greek mythology if you cut the head off a Hydra, two more would grow back which seems fitting because every time I take a sip I have to take two more to try and figure out what is happening. I can't tell if this is good or nasty. The beer itself looks appealing, it poured a thick purple from the can and the lack of carbonation resembled a viscous blood which then went off the rails giving me a strange mental images of Barney the Dinosaur on a cross being poked with a spear and purple blood spewing out. The aromas are a barrier to enjoyment- the vanilla or maybe lactose? are combining to give this beer a custardy aroma that just screams danger every time I sip. I push through and have to endure the custard like vanilla flavors on the front end of the beer to get to the wonderful tangy, sweet fruit blooms in this interesting tart smoothie. The vanilla is a detriment to this beer and keeps it from being an epic beer. Luckily the fruit and mouthfeel keep this tasting more like a Hydra than a Deuce.
Had no idea what to expect with this one but really enjoyed it. The vanilla and cinnamon really complemented the other flavors well. Usually I find sours to be very acidic but that’s not the case here. Definitely a beer I would not have tried on my own but would happily have another. This one really embraces the spirit of the Extreme Beer Box.
By far my favorite beer in the box so far - the color and thickness on this beer is just unbelievable. Flavor - phenomenal. This is the second beer we have had from Mortalis (first one was a hydra with cherry/mango/raspberry) - SO GOOD. Please keep including them as you put Beer Boxes together!!
Just put my review in. This beer is surprisingly drinkable. Thick mouthfeel. A lot of fruit with cherries and vanilla and a bit of apricot on the finish. A very good beer worthy of the extreme moniker.
They’re local-ish to me (70 miles), so I’m familiar with their take on heavily fruited sours. They’re crazy. Maybe that’s not PC mental health wise, but it’s true. I am so far on the opposite spectrum, but when you want a really complex fruity, sour, human ABV, big 16 oz can of something cold to refresh your palate, Mortalis sours will work. For me, all sours have a sort of bloating effect that is probably the only less enjoyable part of the experience.
