I'm headed down from Ithaca next Sunday (2/20) with two friends. The plan is to hit Tin Barn and Drowned Lands and then scooch up to Suarez in time to pick up before they close at 5. The question is: what can/should we squeeze in between? If we're quick enough at the first two places, I'm thinking Obercreek and maybe Hudson Valley Brewing.

    1) Am I missing anything vital?
    2) Any can't miss/quick eats on this route?
    3) Anything in Catskills we should consider on our way home? Weaver Hollow isn't open Sundays, so that's out.

    Peace out

Eq if you're looking for stouts, but I wouldn't go nuts to get any ipa especially with the other spots you want to hit. Pretty sure Suarez's brother runs a nice restaurant nearby the brewery but I have not been. Might be a good early dinner to hit before driving back?

Plan Bee is right in that route, great wilds.

District 96 might be just a bit too far south, but if it's within your range it's more than worth a stop. They also have great food and plenty of seating.

Fidens might be a bit too much of a detour and timing their releases might not be the easiest fitting in with the rest of the schedule.

I've heard good things about Wayward Lane but also might be too much of a detour.

If you have time to stop for a bite and a drink go to Saisonnier in Kinderhook. Low key best tap list in the area and incredible sandwiches and charcuterie. Also they have a shitload of lambic to drink on premise or to bring home. They're about 15 - 20 minutes north of Suarez.

Also, I'll second Plan Bee. Great beers. Great atmosphere. Their cellar beer is killer.

Good thoughts, folks. Not much room for off the path if we’re going to get to Suarez by 5. I do love me some D96, and thankfully I get to stop in whenever I visit my kid in school.

Is this all in 1 day? That's a pretty packed itinerary if so. The only thing I'd add is picking up some pizza from Lucoli in Red Hook since it looks like you'll be taking 9 up to Suarez if your plan is to hit HVB, Obercreek, and Plan Bee.

No way we get to all of these. I’m sure we end up taking it easy and only hitting Obercreek on the way from DL to Suarez. We can do it if we get to TB exactly at 11.

Another vote for Plan Bee (and Halftime is worth a quick stop en route). Industrial Arts’ Beacon location is only about a 5 minute detour (or a 1 minute detour if you’re hitting Hudson Valley), but it’s on a slightly different route than Obercreek, which I’d probably prioritize. Or if you prefer IPA’s to Wilds, you could also cut East to Sloop and then head up the Taconic to Suarez.

If you’re going to Tin Barn and Drowned Lands, you might as well also stop at Rushing Duck, which is right down the road. Great canned and bottled options. I like them just as much if not more than the other two places.

Another vote for Rushing Duck - and right up the hill is Valkyrie Coffee Roasters which I very highly recommend to grab a cup (and some beans) for the next leg of the trip!

Thanks everyone for chiming in. I had the brilliant idea that we leave earlier and pick up at Suarez first, which freed us up to take our time and make it an epic trip. I took it easy and let my posse let it rip, and fun was had by all.

Suarez: Such an easy pickup. Car weighed down already.

Obercreek: Total class, great beer. Servers chatted us up just as we were leaving. Which was weird but nice.

Industrial Arts: Also very chill. The server was the same guy who shared his epic, obscure funk mix with me just before lockdown. I got to thank him for helping me out early in Covid. Beers pretty good, I think you know.

Hudson Valley: Great vibe inside and out. I'm not a big fan of sour IPAs, and that was just about all they had on draft. But that's cool. IPAs were good, should have grabbed a bottle or two of something sour.

Tin Barn: Oh lord, what have we walked into? Seemed like some weird cult, the entire place worshiping the admittedly pretty good cover band. But if I'm placing a band in my bar, I'm putting them to one side so folks have the option to feel the 80s vibes or not. It was almost impossible to find a seat and I couldn't get out of there quick enough. Boyz laughing it up about video of me with shifty eyes, trying to figure out wtf was going on there. Beer was just okay, and I think the Cover Cult must be clouding people's thoughts when they bump up the ratings.

Drowned Lands: Great to be back in adult environment. Hung on the benches and enjoyed some samples and then weighed down the car some more. I love everything about this place.

Rushing Duck: I've been there before way back in the day. IMO the beer didn't hold up to what I'd tried. IPAs seemed muddy and even smoky, which was weird. Nice folks, nice space.

Equilibrium: Still a sweet, beautiful spot, very chill by the time we got there. Entire ordering/payment process done on phones takes a bit away from the experience and didn't save the server much time because we needed him to explain and help check us out, since it wasn't clear whose orders were on whose bills. Science and Sorcery was my favorite, a great short pour for a nightcap.

Ride home to Ithaca fueled by introducing bro to Eels' Daisies of the Galaxy album. Bro cried during "It's a ************," and we'll always have that moment. Home by 10:30, not too shabby for visiting 8 places.

The "veggie fridge" is back to being the "beer fridge" and I'm ready for the rest of my school break.

EDIT: Second highlight at Industrial Arts was seeing a bottle of Ithaca Brute half on display/half hidden in the plants above the bar. Nice nod to a beer that was huge for Chief and meant a lot to me many moons ago.

Great reviews...and in regards to Tin Barn, I am in total agreement. We lived 15 minutes from there but barely ever went because it was too crazy. We said it seemed like being in a shopping mall food court from back in the day. Sounds like a helluva day. Cheers!

Wow. Is Tin Barn that bad? I’m going up next Saturday night to my buddy’s house in Goshen and was planning a stop there. He lives right next to Long Lot so we’re definitely going there but should we go to Drowned Lands instead of TB? I can kinda-sorta get DL cans around me, can’t get TB.

That was a sample size of one visit, and also I’m sure the world and I don’t agree on many things. But I would return to DL over and over again. Tin Barn? I’d rather read a book in the parking lot.

Wow, lol, that’s quite a statement. I checked the beer to-go at both spots. And, someone’s already agreed with you. My buddy could give a shit about a beer, so I think I’ll drag him to DL instead.

@ColdOne awesome report. Sounds like you had a great day.

You stumbled on a really busy day at Tin Barn. They posted a video on their Instagram. Maybe you're in it? Haha. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CaNM5CNAbcy/?utm_medium=copy_link

In addition to that band playing, you stumbled on the release day of a hyped collab with District 96. They get busy, but aren't usually this packed.

@guinness77 no reason you can't hit both. They're 5 min away from each other. You can get cans at TB and hang out at Drowned Lands if the vibe at TB isn't your thing. Coldone and @Rocktire are pretty spot on in their reviews. Drowned Lands is more laid back and Tin Barn is more rowdy.

Thanks for the awesome and detailed review -- definitely helps me prioritize some of the places I want to hit first on my next trip West of the Hudson!!

I share the same opinions on Tin Barn. Not my vibe. Beer is fine but not worth the high school party atmosphere.

Obercreek and Drowned Lands are great.
