Absolutely agree with you - I was lucky to get one in my Extreme Beer Box and since found my local distributor has it - expect I'll be buying a weekly 4-pack!

Well. Thanks @JackHorzempa for starting this weekend's thread! No bocks/doppelbocks this week, what with starkbierfest starting for me in 1.5 weeks! Today's New Beer is new in review only - I've consumed it previously but didn't review it until today's bottle:

Another, IMHO, overpriced and over-rated brew from Goose Island/Anhauser-Busch. Is it a good Impy stout - sure. Does it deserve the price-point and the adoration - not so much.

Bourbon Country Brand Classic Cola Stout from Goose Island. 16.9 oz bottle from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $ 13.78 (including tax) ($ 0.815/oz). Stored at room temperature in store and at 40 degrees after purchase. Reviewed 06/03/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on label “10AUG26” and on neck label “2021”. Served at 54.1 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 60.0 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Deep Brown (SRM 30), murky and opaque. When rear-lite, opaque with many bubbles, and a reddish tint at the edge.
Head – Small (Maximum one cm, aggressive center pour), wheat with a tinge of yellow, fizzy with short retention, diminishing to a one to six mm crown fed by active carbonation and no cap.
Lacing – None per se. An occasional small piece of the crown breaks off and hangs briefly on the glass before sliding back into the fold.
Aroma – 4.25 – A bit of chocolate, brown sugar, and fig. No malt, no hops, no yeast, no vanilla, no citrus, no bourbon and distinctly no coriander.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins a bit sweet and syrupy, with overtones of brown sugar. No malt, no hops, no yeast, no bourbon. A slight bit of generic spiciness but no identifiable flavors, mulled. No ethanol (14.0% ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma; however, there is moderate gastric and esophageal warming. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, syrupy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 No hint of beer or bourbon, just a sweet syrupy liquid best consumed through a feeding tube. A bit like an RC cola – something you’d drink if you couldn’t find a Coke or Pepsi. Toward the end, a bit of alcohol appears on the exhale.

    Rating 4.13, rDev -1.4%

It is hot - but I guess with an ABV so high, it’s always going to carry some of that, no matter how old it is.

Welcome one and all to New Beer Sunday #889! Returning with the second of two beers brewed by a local suburban brewery, Goldfinger.

Goldfinger, Niteglow, Sugar Creek Malt Company Collaboration Czech-Style Dark Lager

    Can Notes:
16 oz canned 2/22/22 @ 11:11 AM, purchased as a four pack from Capones for $11.99 + tax. 4.3% ABV. Czech-Style Dark Lager. Triple Decoction. Spicy. Roasty.

Brewed in collaboration with Niteglow Beer Company using a special moravian barley grown and malted by Sugar Creek Malt Company. Grown from a mere 200G packet of seeds, this barley was used for the first time since pre WWII.

Appearance: Dark black base, clear with heavy persistent carbonation when held up to light. Creamy white tan head leaves creamy layer and nice lacing. 4.25

Aroma: Caramel, roasted malt, mild in strength. 3.5

Taste: Light dark bread, caramel and brown sugar. Had to really search hard for these flavors, the mouthfeel far more substantial than the taste profile. 3.25

Mouthfeel: Balance bitterness captured by the roast malt and hops, with light residual caramel sweetness. Sweetness wins over while working through the second half. Light and easy drinking, dry, slightly bitter overall, clean finish. 3.75

Overall: This is an OK beer. Not really familiar with pre-prohibition dark lager production, but if this is an example, these beers were light on flavor and easy drinking. Prefer a stronger more flavorful taste profile, stating this with the expectations a 4.3% beer would have limitations. Nice to try this, and I'm glad the brewery is embarking on projects like this. 3.5

Have rated this about 1 rating lower in each category as compared to Dovetail's version, packed with smoky malt and a much stronger taste profile (with their 5.3% ABV). Not sure if cans are available, but if so and if I'm ambitious, I may grab some and do a side by side comparison. For those who do not like roast / smoky malt flavors, and prefer a sweeter profile, you may prefer this one. YMMV.

Hope to work through the thread and find out what you have enjoyed this weekend! Cheers!

    Good Sunday morning, Weekenders!

I'm off pain medication and healing well, so I'm feeling up to easing into a new beer or two today. Definitely still taking it easy, but right now, I'm dealing with very little direct pain or swelling; the greatest impact is that I'm still remarkably gassy, and that is much tougher to deal with.

So, not knowing how much beer is in my immediate future, let me at least get to my most highly anticipated offering recently dropped on my head by @Coronaeus : Jamseson Barrel Aged Peche Mortel.

I've made no secret of it: Peche Mortel is my favorite coffee stout. I could never get it in the South, and have only managed a few bottles since returning to New England. Naturally, as soon as I discovered DDC had a bourbon barrel aged version of it, that instantly leapt onto my Wants list.

This is not that beer, but it's close.

Without having had BBA Peche Mortel (but having had a lot of BBA stouts in my time), I can tell the difference in terms of what Jameson brings to the table. It's drier, more neutral, and less sweet. The pairing with the beer is consequently perhaps less ideal than bourbon, but by no means a poor match for the base beer.

Indeed, the bitterness is amplified a touch, the richness dulled a hair, but overall it still makes for a very nice marriage between barrel and beer. Tasting notes include whiskey, grain, coffee, bitter chocolate, coffee, molasses, cherry, red grape, oak, and vanilla.

The base beer really comes through well. I can detect zero ill effects of age with this nearly 22 month old bottle; it has held up tremendously.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s been my experience that the various BA Peché variants - and even most of the other non-BA Peché variants - hold up extremely well for many years.

You’ll be happy to know my Peché source will be sending me more BBA Peché soon, as well as some BBA Solstice D’Hiver. So…..

Greetings fellow beer nerds. A few new beers to share....two from yesterday on tap at a local establishment and one I'm currently enjoying. I'll hit the Saturday beers first.

First up was Audacity, an Imperial Brown Ale from Back East Brewing.

Appearance is a translucent, flirting with opaque dark, dark brown. Almost no head but very nice lacing. Aroma had some light roasted notes with some diacetyl mixed in. Relatively underwhelming on the nose. On the tongue, this was clean with some light malt sweetness. Surprisingly drinkable for the ABV (8.1%). Solid beer.

Next up was 8 Days a Week from Beer'd.

Translucent , light caramel in color with no head but great lacing. Aroma was quite muted. The citra hops were there, and pleasant, but nothing to write home about. Taste followed the nose. Some light citrus notes, but very one-dimensional. I like citra enough that I enjoyed the beer, but it was very pedestrian overall.

Jumping forward to present day / time, I'm currently enjoying this bottle of Self-Reliance Styrian from Hill Farmstead. Very good beer, and the clear winner of the three I've had this weekend.

Pours a mostly clear, light golden color with an effervescent head that slowly receded to a thin cap. Aroma has a nice complexity to it. Plenty of earthy funk up front, but there are really nice barrel notes lurking beneath. Taste is not as acidic as I anticipated. The result is a nice blend of funk, barrel, lemon, grass and some subtle fruity notes. Just the right amount of carbonation. Clean and lively Really tasty beer. Glad I finally cracked it open.
