The 7th anniversary beers are ok. I think the adjuncts are slightly overpowering though. The issue is that there doesn't seem to be any barrel presence at all in the beers. I stopped in last night and had a few 3oz pours; Coffee, Vanilla, Coconut and Chocolate Peanut. All 4 were fine, the coconut was a little sweet, but just no barrel in any of them. Maybe the bottles will be different, but for a 7th anniversary release these beers fell short, especially when compared to some other barrel aged stuff that Mikerphone has released the last couple years. Slightly disappointed I purchased the set, but I am in no hurry to drink these.

Sounds like a non-ba Deconstructed Bomb set for 169.99.

I ended up purchasing one because I love rye stouts as well. And surprisingly most of the Binny’s collabs have been pretty excellent. I probably won’t get to mine this weekend, so if you do (I think you posted in another thread that you picked one up), let us know how it is.

Some of these reviews are why I stopped buying Mikerphone BA stouts… all adjuncts and little to no barrel presence. I was hoping things had improved, but I guess not. This was always my beef with BA Smells Like Bean Spirit and others.

    Remained?

Not sure their barrel program was ever anything close to "top notch."

Granted I haven't had a lot of their more recent BA releases but a lot of their early BA offerings were pretty average at best.

I think there’s a difference between having a solid barrel program and producing one good barrel aged beer.

Fair enough but wasn't that the COVID year when there wasn't actually an event?

I don't know, as far as I'm aware, their barrel program has never been considered close to the best in the city.

Appropriate since Ron Burgundy didn’t have an opinion that wasn’t spoon fed to him too!

Seriously though, which one of those didn’t you like?

You cited one beer as the end all be all because it won gold. These beers didn’t win gold. I’ve had a few and some are fine. But I don’t have faith in their entire program.

IMO, Mikerphone’s BA beers with additives are often really sweet and light on barrel flavor. I enjoy them, but that’s because I love boozy desserts and not because they’re an example of a great barrel program.

Their non-adjuncted BA beers are almost always very good though, and they have been producing a lot more of them lately. I’d say their barrel program is pretty respectable.

Are most of their BA offerings adjuncted or non-adjuncted?

I had the Binny’s collab last night. It was no Thundertaker but I enjoyed it. I don’t need to buy more at the packing and price point.

I can’t vouch for their barrel program in general though as I haven’t had enough.

I think historically, they have been mostly adjuncted. In the last year or so, it seems like they are doing more non-adjuncted though. Up until this recent 7-year release, that is.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but I was curious. I was wondering, because it's clear that you think highly of their barrel program (I take that to mean their ability/capabilities, not necessarily what they actually put out each time). -But it sounds like that is limited to the non-adjuncted BA offerings, based on your post.

I had someone offer to proxy for me, so I almost pulled the trigger, but I just couldn't justify the purchase right now. Glad I didn't, but still look forward to trying my first Mikerphone offerings in the (hopefully near) future.
