    This is great!

My eye for the colours is not great, but I think I’m hovering pretty close to 0.0% rDev. I feel as though my ratings have trended higher over time here because better beer is more widely available. I’m guessing that might be the case for many now that I’ve seen this. Early on, I drank a lot of beers that I’d place in the 3.5 - 3.75 range. Now, most seem to land around 3.9 - 4.3 or so, at least that is my impression. The average beer I try is better than it was 8 years ago and I haven’t adjusted what my impression of ‘average’ is to compensate.

"phish" only appears to be mentioned in anyone's written reviews when they're thanking you for the beer you sent them.

Personally, I feel this is the right attitude. I've had it twice on tap way back when you could get Russian River here in Washington. It's excellent...but there's a lot of excellent out there.

I think much the same. Think back to the average IPA you were likely to find on tap, say, 10 years ago. Redhook Longhammer? Stone IPA? Solid enough.

But when Enjoy By came out, it was hailed as a Heady killer by some, despite being distributed far greater than Heady (albeit still fairly limited at the time).

Nowadays, even your standard sports bar is likely to offer an IPA much better than Longhammer. Jai Alai is nearly automatic in the Southeast, and that beer blew my mind when I first had it.

Our availability to damn tasty beers has never been so good. That's definitely impacted what we consider "average," but it's a tough balance. I've started to rate some damn good beers below 4.0 simply because, well, they're good, bordering on great, but nothing new or unique, and pretty much "standard" for what you can get on tap nowadays.

Well, I see it as the more beers one has in a given style, the more similarities than differences there will be. Over time, ones reviews should be leaning more towards the average (3) than the extremes of 1 and 5. Even with my reputation as miserly with digits, my average score of 3.4 means that even I think most beers are above average, which is statistically impossible.

    Maybe so and maybe not...

Hint #5: my target's BA username has only letters - whether they are all lowercase or a mix of lowercase and uppercase, who can say?

Well, it's statistically impossible that most beers are above average, but not statistically impossible that most beers you have reviewed or rated are above average. Most of us gravitate toward beers we know we will enjoy (vice ticking for ticking sake), which skews the average higher above 3.0.

Of course, the larger the sample size (reviewers like you, me, and Ian), the less true that holds, as we are bound to come across more average, or even below average, beers.

Yea, I often feel like my average score on BA (3.91) is too high, but the truth is, I avoid beers or breweries that I know aren't going to be good or that I am not likely to enjoy. So the scores do tend to skew higher.

I feel like there is something here - like, we should all include a beer we've rated really low in our box or something ....

Assuming states can be provinces, Hudson’s Bay is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. I’ve rated more beers, but you have reviewed more. Perhaps reviews and ratings are interchangeable in this hint?

    Yes

    9

    yes.

    I am getting suspicious….

I like this idea. Would anyone like an extra chunky IIIPA?

So I can keep track, I have ruled out

    @superspak "shipping west"
@Whyteboar "technically shipping west" but could this mean the post office is west than its coming east???
@FBarber based on # of reviews
@woemad based on "a lot of reviews"

I think that's it though I may have overlooked some...

    This has me thinking...

This I'm looking for patterns in the dates...what pattern or operation I don't know yet but why include them otherwise

Same here. My average score is clearly high, but I definitely tend to buy beer that I know is more likely to be good. I am also a fan of a lot of styles, which I think contributes to a higher average.

I worked SO DAMN HARD for this completely useless chart. I couldn't figure out a reasonable way to do it just with Sheets or Excel, so I ended up writing a program to calculate the data and spit it out into a format Excel could plot.
It's everyone's 28 day "running average" of rDev. Each point on each curve is the average rDev of all of that person's reviews in the 28 day period preceding that date. If there are no reviews in the 28 day period, the line breaks and there is just empty space until the next review.

Some big spikes make it even harder to see the total mess, so here's the same thing cropped down to a +/- 20% range.

    Still completely useless!

Looking at an individual is more interesting, so here's mine all by itself:

I'm not going to create and post 18 more of these. If you want yours in the thread, let me know; if you want yours separately, message me.

    Perhaps superfluous data for obfuscation?

Perhaps it's critical to deciphering my diabolical code?
