As I've gotten older (now 45) I've noticed more and more people in my age group and older are "retiring" from beer. Health issues (weight gain mainly) and burnout are the main reasons. I've definitely cut back over the last few years (to maintain weight) but can't imagine giving it up completely at this point. The people I'm thinking of were pretty hardcore to - on top of all the new local releases, frequent brewery visits etc. To just abruptly stop is strange to me. It feels like this hobby has a definite shelf life with some people. I'm 20+ years into it and still enjoy it quite a bit.

Just wondering if others notice the same thing. I'm running out of people to drink/discuss beer with (ha)!

Seems like those “retiring” from beer are doing it to get into the bourbon hobby.

While I enjoy a bourbon, I def still enjoy beer more and can’t imagine giving up beer for it

Yes, many move on to bourbon. The reasons I've been given are mainly "fewer calories" as opposed to enjoying it more.

    I drink both!

29 here and while still enjoy beer I’ve faaaaaar cut back. Sometimes I’ll go several weeks without compared to when I drank 4-5 every day. Just for health reasons, hard labor job don’t want to feel cloudy or anything.

I think there are many people with a substance use disorder in the craft beer world in general and on beer advocate specifically. I would imagine a proportion of the folks who are “retiring from beer because of health issues” are trying to get sober because booze is ruining important relationships in their lives. I wish them luck. I also think beer advocate should have a link with resources to support people struggling with addiction. Resources recommended by trusted sources, which BA is to many of us, can be very helpful to people seeking to obtain or maintain sobriety. Given the wide variation in effects alcohol has on humans, there is reason we can't advocate for beer whilst also supporting those for whom it is a problem. Just my $0.02.

At age 54, I just don't have the energy to drink as much beer as I did several years ago. (not that I was ever a heavy drinker) I still enjoy beer as much as I ever have; I'm just more circumspect about my choices.

Same here. I've been in the process of phasing out beers north of 9% ABV and focusing more on lagers, single IPAs, basic stouts/porters etc.

Look as we age (60) things trend the wrong direction . Blood pressure, weight, afib, etc. Beer doesn't help. Haven't stopped but it's less than it was

I definitely notice potential issues in some of the threads. Especially the folks spilling the beans on how much they drink weekly, and trying to justify it by asking (for example) "I drink xx beers a week, how about everyone else?" It's almost like that's the first step in admitting you have a problem.

At age 69, still love social aspect of having a beer with friends or family. My wife barely ever drinks anything any more, so family drinking is with my children and spouses who are all in their 30's. Typically, since I am retired, I meet up with old work or college friends in the city for lunch where I can take public transportation (train and subway). Sometimes meet friends in suburbs, but if I'm driving I limit myself to just one or two beers. Two beers is actually my limit on most drinking occasions, unless I'm home or visiting family or friends where I am spending the night. On those rare times, I might have 3-4 beers. I don't really get inebriated any more, too much just makes me want to go to bed and sleep. Given I am only having a 1-2, I want something interesting that I can sip and savor. I like IPAs but a nice classic Helles like Weihenstephaner is as good as it gets....

Ash Barty is the #1 ranked women's tennis player in the world. She just retired at age 25. Who am I to question anyone's motives? I think if 40-year-olds (not remotely old) want to stop drinking for personal reasons, that's awesome. Hence the word personal. As a human being, sometimes we have to do what is right for us. Besides, who is being hurt in this situation? Sure, your drinking buddies "might" miss you, but w/ anything in life, we're all replaceable. Much love to you, sir. Keep enjoying the amazing beers we have at our disposal, if you so choose. Peace...

Among the group of my friends that range from early 40s to like 50 I see a mix. Few guys smoke more weed and drink less and another portion drink more cocktails. I would say two are weight related. We have a text “beer thread” where we send pics of any good beers we are drinking or just beer pics is good spots, like and 805 at the beach. A year or so ago the thread was super active. Now it seems like it’s me and two other guys are the only ones sending messages/pics.

Right. I'm not the type to question anyone's motives or pressure them into changing their minds. I'm generally very supportive. We all have our reasons.

One friend quit drinking because his wife complained of snoring. I'll admit to chuckling at that one.

I gotta say people that switch to cocktails could be consuming the same number of calories, if not more.

I don't know any older people...

(I don't know, I come to this site to read about and discuss beer, not people...).

I concur. My buddy started doing cocktails for calories. Used to drink stuff like sparkling water and vodka but now he’s got some pre old fashioned mix that he adds bourbon to. The mix is so sweet. Between the bourbon and mix It’s gotta be like drinking a double ipa.

At age 48 I'm now drinking less than half of what I was drinking three years ago. Three years ago I was running long distances to earn my beer. Now that I don't, it's either drink the beer and gain the fat, or be more circumspect and maintain reasonable condition. The way I look at it, there are no fat 80-year-olds.

But I also learned the hard way a few years back that you never know what's around the corner. I'm torn between wanting to drink all the great beers I have in my fridge before I keel over, and the contents of the paragraph above. Why can't life be black and white, damnit?

    Cheers
