Doc gave me a choice. Whle cutting way back or quitting beer in some ways seemed like the worst of the two alternatives, I chose it anyway.

I know virtually nothing about bourbon except it's made from corn which I prefer to avoid. However, I do know that the range of flavors and aromas from various beer styles will provide infinitely more variety than bourbon will.

    What he said.

    62, BTW, so define "old."

Funny this comes up now. Yesterday, my doctor "suggested" I cut back the drinking, maybe save it for the weekends? So, I'm sitting here on my evening "relax" with a Ginger Beer (read: soda). Have already stocked some NA beer in the fridge, hunting for more.
I really don't like the prospect of this, but what do I do, search for another doc? I hate, hate to admit it, but I know he's right.
I guess I'll really start appreciating the weekends now.

Although some of us would like to ignore medical advice, it pays to heed President John Adams when he said, "Facts are stubborn things."

I'm 43. I don't know that I really drink less beer. But rather I am more focused on the few styles that I like. I'm no longer interested in the insta-diabetes big stouts, especially pastry stouts, or kettle soured fruit slushies, whatever they are called. Even IPAs I drink less than ever before and def not hazies. I'll reach for a good west coast style IPA when I get the urge. I like a nice pils, kolsch etc. I'm happy to sit down and have a few Hamms. Maybe that is just a natural progression for beer drinkers? My beer drinking "group" have pretty much all followed my progression, fortunately. We'll still crack some big stouts on special occasions, but not on the reg.

Doctors just don't want you to have fun.
I lie about it to my Drs. as they would say to me, "You drink every day?" in exclamation.
I've cut back recently and a few years ago I started to watch ABVs.
But then again "old" is a relative thing.

Consuming less each year (will be 32 this year) and I mostly attribute it to just being more and more bored with the industry. Health reasons, even beyond just the physical is more than a good enough reason to slow down and lower consumption!

This. I've cut way back over the past couple of years, mostly for these reasons. I still love trying a variety of styles, and big imperial stouts and palate-shredding IPAs will always be among my favorites. My work-around is to limit my intake to a tasting glass or two, plus an occasional bourbon, Scotch, or spirit-forward cocktail.

NA beers are not, and will never be, an option for me. They still have calories. If I'm going to blow calories on beer, I'm going to make them count.

"Old" is "my age plus ten years."

    Good god -- I hope you're not 42!

I've certainly been drinking more lately. Why? I have had the time. Is it gonna kill me? Maybe. Am I ready for that? Absolutely. Been paying for this life insurance for decades now.

I'm 52. I don't drink as much as I once did, but I probably still drink more than the average person (if you can believe the studies).

Here are the things that I've noticed over the past 5-7 years:
    1) When I go high abv, I keep it to 2, at the most 3, beers
    2) I enjoy lower abv "sessionable" beers more than I did even a decade ago.

If those are the only changes that happen to me in the next decade, then I can live with it.

This older people is not giving up beer. I am trying to maximize the quality of the beer I do drink. This naturally limits consumption but maximizes enjoyment. At the point in my life that I can afford to do this. Cheers!

About half of my older friends (I'm old too) drink much less beer now. Cocktails, or wine or weed have replaced the beer.
