Tonight's Blind Battle Beer Tasting Lineup:

1) Blue Moon Belgian White (5.4%): A Belgian wheat from Colorado with flavors of Valencia orange peel and cream, but mostly has turned into orange and oxidation.
versus
2) Breckenridge Hazy Pilsner (5.0%): A hazy pilsner from Colorado with flavors of flowers, black tea, earthy grassy hops with some yeasty pale malts. Light struck and skunked to finish.

3) Surly Hyper Modern IPA (7.8%): An IPA from Minnesota with Idaho 7 hops and flavors of citrus variants, tart pear honeydew melon, and tart red and elderberry. Smooth.
versus
4) Odell Positive Latitudes IPA (8.0%): An imperial IPA from Colorado with Passionfruit hopped to provide tropical flavors of passionfruit, pineapple, grapefruit citrus. Light and clean.

5) Guinness Extra Stout (5.6%): An Irish Dry Stout that has flavors of bittersweet cocoa, Irish coffee, and roasted black malt. A slightly sour finish, but clean.

6) Bells' Kalamazoo Stout (6.0%): A Stout from Michigan with flavors of balanced dark chocolate, mocha roast, with hints of cinnamon and roasted dark malts.
(All 3 of 3 pairs correctly matched blind)

Winners:

2) Breckenridge Hazy Pilsner: This one has a nice English twist of flowers, black tea, and earthy grassy notes. Although the flavor was slightly overshadowed by the light-struck skunkiness. The Blue Moon was oxidized and tasted old.

3) Surly Hyper Modern IPA: Intended to blend tropical and citrus, this one has nice green citrus and melon with even some tart elderberry flavors. Dynamic for only a few hop varieties. Positive Latitudes was pretty good too.

6) Bells Kalamazoo Stout: This has become one of my favorite winter beers with a diverse range of flavors that span from chocolate, coffee, and roasted black malts. A balanced body without being too sweet. I think this is the better beer.

This looks great. Just picked up some BA barleywines today from New Park Brewing. 2 of them being aged in bourbon barrels, the other two in apple brandy barrels. Can’t wait to open them

 

Done with work today - was a pretty laid back day. Waiting for our Friday Beer Zoom to start, having a Smuttynose Finestkind in the meantime. Got some chicken wings that have been marinating all day that will be going in the oven for dinner.

 

Banquet paired with hot & spicy pork rinds and peanuts.
