Next up is the one I have been very excited to sit down and do a review of since I finally found it last month - Trappistes Rochefort Triple Extra.

So right off the bat, this bottle probably should have been decanted ... but I did not realize that until it was too late. As a result there are a number of chunk of yeast that ended up in the beer. They do eventually settle into the bottom of the glass. Otherwise, the beer pours a completely opaque, matte orange color. Two finger velvety off-white head forms on the beer. Excellent retention on the head as it settles in and then lingers for quite some time. Aroma is really interesting - its sweet, with a somewhat bready note like brioche. Fruity notes come through with notes of pear, apple, and white grape. Some light spicy notes are there with hints of clove, and allspice with a floral hoppy note on the back end.

Taste follows the nose with notes of brioche and some grain notes. There are notes of honey, pear, apple, and some floral notes. Its sweet for the style, but not cloyingly so, although I do think its a bit too sweet for the style. The finish has some notes of pepper, clove, and all spice with a surprisingly prominent hop presence on the back end. The hops are really past their prime as they have this odd vegetal type flavor on the back end with some notes of dried grass and pepper. Feel is thin, and a bit rough. Very carbonated producing a prickly lively feel.

Overall, I am honestly shocked at how disappointing this one is. This bottle was about 2 years old (as were all the bottles that showed up around here) and honestly I think that was a major issue with this. I did not enjoy it ... but I feel like I need a fresh bottle to see if it was the beer or just the age on this. This bottle is kind of harsh, a mess, and the hops stand out in a bad way. I know I am going to come in way below rDev on this, but honestly, my experience was completely different than what it seems most people have had with this one. If I ever see a fresh bottle, I will pick it up, but I have no further interest in the old bottles that are currently sitting around here.

I do not have any tripels to try currently. I am going to stick to a few beers given to me by a brewer. First Beer is Mexican Lager by Radio Brewing out of Kellogg ID. A hoppy bite gives this Adjunct Lager a fresh take with a pleasant. 4.25

Cross posting with the Tripel thread, just realized I’ve never taken the time to review Chimay White. This is a good Tripel but the Wetmalle and La Fin du Monde are better.

Just like that it is the weekend again, today was a long and yet rewarding day. I am spent so this may be my only beer tonight, but time will tell. This week I took a personal day off from work...part of that day involved going to a brewery to enjoy a beer (a smoked lager) and read a book. Something I haven't done in years, the only way to make that happen, take a day off from work

Human Robot - Burgenstraße (franconian zwickelbier)

The only other franconian style lager I've had is from Fox Farm and I loved it so I'm excited to try this one.

Pours brilliantly clear a shade between straw and amber; very nice color. The head settles into a soapy island and then slowly disappears to splotchy islands. Random dots of lacing from the initial head.

Nose is a pleasant combination of fresh baked bread that is just slightly toasted, and a really nice earthy and floral like hop aroma.

Drinking brings out much of the same; slightly toasted bread and earthy grassy hops, maybe some graininess.

Light body yet full and complex mouthfeel, it has heft to it and then drinks incredibly smooth and clean, there is a drying sensation on the tongue that pairs nicely with a low to medium bitterness. This beer is very very easy to drink quickly with zero thought.

This is a very good beer and I'm glad I got to try it. Perhaps more of you will be reviewing this beer in due time

Good Saturday evening, NBW. Not a total washout of a day here, but kinda raw and cold feeling. Started on a little yard work and figuring out how to dispose of a swim spa cover...10 x 4 feet of 4 inch thick foam plus other materials...

    Back into the vault today:

Pretty Things Babayaga...the bottle says it is a Sylvan stout and the artwork does nothing to dispute that claim... Looks like this is called a foreign/export stout here. So we know it's old, let's see how this goes.

Pour looks good, almost black with a half inch tan head. Falls fairly quickly, leaves a nice ring and big island. Pretty leggy, liquid clinging to the glass.

Slightly smokey smell initially, a molasses sweetness, roasted malts, a nutty component, and unfortunately a smidge of oxidation. Just a little chocolate, and a kind of herbal presence that I can't identify from the mix as it isn't very strong.

Wow...pleasant tasting brew here. Smokey and more peat-like, maybe reminiscent of Scotch. There's molasses/caramel flavor, and more chocolate than the nose suggests. Malty, slight char on the back end, and that herbal thing floats in...rosemary springs to mind. The flavor overall hits pretty hard, but it is oddly clean, and subsides pretty quickly.

Medium bodied, slight tingle, somewhat dry.

Overall, pretty smooth brew. Certainly highly drinkable and it seems to meet the style pretty well. Even though it's retired (in more ways than one) I will land between 3.8 to 4.0 on this one. I think it has held up pretty well.

American Solera, The Magic Touch IPA, 7.2%; 3.96 overall

Pours a very hazy straw color with 2+ fingers of rocky pearl colored head. Nice lacing & above average head retention

S: Plenty of tangerine & lime, some breadyness

T: Grapefruit & tangerine, green melon, grassy bitterness, plus dryness up front, some leafy hops as well. A little green melon, more tangerine & lime as this warms. Finishes a little dry with plenty of grapefruit & a little lime

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, pretty good balance

Flavor-wise this didn't pull together for me, I like these juicy ones a little sweeter. Still drinks fairly easy

Next up is one that was gifted to me by my sister-in-law's boyfriend. Left Hand Brewing Co. - St. Vrain

This one pours a remarkably clear light golden color. It's not perfectly clear, but its mostly so. Thin, sudsy white head forms on the beer before receding leaving just a thin circle of foam in the center of the top of the beer. Aroma has notes of grain, pear, apple, some honey, and a light belgian-like yeast note.

Taste is dominated with rustic, harsh grain notes. Beyond that there are hints of pear, apple and white grape with a very strong clove/all sipce note on the back end that actually is a bit much. There is a strong alcohol flavor and burn to this as well that is kind of unpleasant. Feel is medium bodied, pretty smooth, but with a lively carbonation.

Overall this was not great. The grain note was harsh and the alcohol burn was unpleasant. I wouldn't drink this one again.

Spice Wars bourbon barrel aged dark star 2020 by Fremont

Brewers Notes: Our Imperial Oatmeal Stout aged in 15 year old single use Kentucky Bourbon Barrels. Spice wars adds vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cloves.

Waxed , capped bottle poured into a snifter, black motor oil , dense creamy two finger brown foam cap , recedes to a ring with spotty lacings. A fragrant aroma of cinnamon, allspice , nutmeg and vanilla wafts from the glass. Cinnamon bark is the primary fragrance. Nutmeg next.

The taste is cinnamon without the heat, nutmeg, all spice, vanilla . The taste of cinnamon and nutmeg linger in the aftertaste.

Luscious, rich , syrupy mouthfeel coats the mouth. Slightly sweet , no heat

    Good beer, thanks @snaotheus

Bentonville Deliverance Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, 12.5% ABV; 4.16 overall

Pours mahogany with a sliver of mocha colored head. Zero head retention & lacing, viscous

S: Dark fruit, a hint of barrel, vanilla

T: Follows the nose, getting some serious Bourbon notes & oaky dryness up front, pretty dry. More oaky dryness, a little bit of charred grain, baker's chocolate & a touch of warm booze as this beer warms up. Finishes with some cola flavor, dark chocolate, barrel warmth

MF: Fairly chewy body with low carbonation, warming

Super solid BA Imp Stout, the heft & flavor profile makes this a slow sipper

Pours black with a dark tan head that disappears in seconds - or less. The nose is rife with the cacao nibs and there’s also a nice dose of the marshmallow and vanilla - and a nice boozy bourbon note as well.

The cacao is forward on the taste as well, and the vanilla and marshmallow are a delicious complement to that flavor, but there’s a significant boozy flavor that is very warming and works magnificently with the other flavors. There’s a lot going on here, yet there’s a nice balance. Kudos to Prairie for that level of execution.

The mouthfeel is full, but a bit soft for a beer of this gravity. Still, this is a style where Prairie excels, and Fluf’t is no exception.

Cross-posting from the Tripel thread. Poured just under fridge temp. There are definitely some chunks roaming around the glass after the pour. Still persisting after a few minutes, but it's not a big deal. A nice orange murky pour with lots of white head. Tons of lacing.

The nose is orange creamsicle right out of the gate. Bread/yeast, lavender, honey, a bit of apple, and a nice grassy note. There definitely is a floral note. The nose is really nice.

The taste is sweet upfront. Candy, orange, bread, honey, tree sap, a slight hop bitterness, hay, and a touch of citrus peel. Really smooth and refreshing. Fairly light tasting overall, at least compared to some of the tripels (like La Fin Du Monde).

Mouthfeel is fairly light. The alcohol really isn't detectable. Definitely unique among tripels for me, but also very good.

So many tripels in the NBW! That's why I'm not drinking one here, also because I've had the same tripel for the last three days and don't actually have another example of the style because I wasn't prepared bit we won't talk about that anymore.

So I have the Spaten Oktoberfest out of Munich
    [IMG]

Quite the sneaky head on this one. As I was pouring it didn't look like I'd be able to get a good head so I poured a little harder and I ended up with a third of a Glass of head (same thing happened with a la fin du monde tonight as well). So I let it sit for a bit and carried on pouring, by the end of the pour I had achieved all 12ozs into my Glass with just a bit over half a finger of head sticking out the top of the glass. It's a great looking beer let me tell you.

Welcome to New Beer Sunday #892! Two more Tripels planned for today, here is the first from the brewer of two of my Top 10 Beers across any style.

Trappistes Rochefort Triple Extra Belgian Ale

    Bottle Notes:
11.2 oz, 8.1% ABV. Bottled 9/1/20 (inferred), Best By 8/31/23. Imported by Merchant du Vin, Tacoma, Washington. Dropped at the store within a few weeks of purchase ($6.74 Beer on the Wall), refrigerated until this morning.

Appearance: Single slower pour into a chalice. Orange bronze base, didn't catch the yeast sediment. Rich creamy head lasts for 10 plus minutes before slowly dissipating leaving full lacing and a very full cover over the base, Beyond the floaters (0.5 deduction), looks very good. Carbonation very active post pour, tornado like conditions within the base. 3.75

    Aroma:
Citrus leads, followed by cloves and light pear. Light in strength, mellow/subdued, edges sweet. 3.5

    Taste:
Mirrors the aroma, light, taste subdued to muted. Just a general bland clove and citrus, no spices and where are the hops? Inoffensive, but uninspiring. 3.25

    Mouthfeel:
Very creamy, slightly dry, balanced. Light fizzy carbonation sustained. Easy finish, alcohol not felt until half way in. 3.75

    Overall:
It's quite possible something happened in either transport or at the importer, but this tastes like a beer past it's prime. A shame because this is such a great brewery. I'm scoring as is, but I am hopeful I can get to a fresh batch sometime down the road to revisit. 3.25

I have a fresh local Tripel which I will try later today, freshness will not be a problem since it was brewed this winter.

Hope you have a great beer day!

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

I am later to the party than I should be. I wanted to post my new beer from yesterday, but I was worried I'd be tarred and feathered for my review of it. Well, I'm here now, and one from the same brewery I had yesterday.

Daisy Cutter - Half Acre Brewing - APA - 5.2% ABV.

Half Acre products are new to my central Minnesota home, and they came into work on Friday. We got 3 of their products at work. This is my 3rd of them.

So, what do I think of this beer? In a word, impressed. It's tasty as heck, and a good way to start the day. My review will say it all.

This beer pours a dark golden color, almost amber. Quite clear looking. The head is 2 finger, white, frothy, and fluffy looking. The head retention is quite good, and the head clings to the glass to form nice lacing as it dissipates.
Nose is quite minimal. I do get a faint hint of hops that makes me think of pine.
Up front I get a nice malty biscuit flavor, slightly buttery. This biscuit doesn't last long, because the hops then kick in. They're not as strong as an IPA (of course), but they're there, and linger. The hops tend toward pine. There's also a slight earthy, grassy flavor here also.
Body is crisp, but also full at the same time.
Overall this is a quite delicious beer, and I'm glad we've got it locally now.

I'm sure I'll be back later. All depends on what happens today. See you all down the road.
