I have a couple of Guinness gravity glasses that I really like. For those of you that have similar glasses, are they dishwasher safe? I'm not concerned about the glass itself, but I don't want the gold harp or the white "Guinness" to wash off.

Sorry if this has been asked before--I tried searching here and on Google and haven't been able to find an answer.

They are not dishwasher safe in the sense that the logo and lettering will wash off over time in the dishwasher. If you do not want to lose that, hand wash or rinse.

What are gravity glasses? That sounds like a term used to describe something special about them other than the fact that they are branded as Guinness. Are these like those wierd Sam Adams glasses that had etching on the bottom to…do whatever it did to the carbonation?

They're the standard Guinness glasses. I think it has to do with how they highlight the sinking bubbles in Guinness.

The glasses from UK breweries seem to react the worst from American dishwashers - logos faded - eventually destroyed, glass etched, w/white residue impossible to remove. I'd suspect Irish glasses might react the same.

If you drop 'em, they fall to the ground/floor. They usually break, too.
The anti-gravity glasses - you can only get in Ireland where the Guinness tastes better, too. Maybe it's the glass?

Gravity "pints" not equal to Imperial pint. Sent mine to Salvation Army, kept my vintage Guinness Impys.

Well, since the gravity of Guinness stout has gone down over the centuries, it makes sense that same would happen to their glass.

(Still don't understand what "gravity glass" means or is. Googlin' just turns up the standard "tulip pint" shaped glasses with a few variations - the same shape glass that Bass and Samuel Smith have made available in the US over the years).

Named for the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Brewery... where they're obviously still rebelling against the uh, imperials.

Huh really? I thought it held the same amount...

Edit: Some quick googling said both styles hold 20 oz. Unless I'm thinking of a different Guinness Imperial pint?

Huh nope. Tried to pour a Draught Can into mine and had to wait out the cascade.

That said -- maybe there are different sizes? I got mine at a retailer for buying a 4-pack, but it looked just like the ones pictured.

Also, it was manufactured pretty weird -- like two halves glued together, full length seams on the sides -- felt real cheap.

I think there are 2 sizes. Mine are an imperial pint, so even if I try to pour a massive head, there's still space at the top if I'm pouring a 12 ounce bottle/can. Mine are pretty heavy, thick glass. I bought them in a 2 pack at Total Wine off a St. Patrick's Day display.

Okay, so maybe the freebies were cheaply made for giveaways. But I remember getting a cheap one in a bar, too -- probably because they could pour less and charge the same.

I'll keep my eyes open for different examples, but in the meantime I'll continue to use my good ol' originals.

I have set of these but they don't have the gold and silver. I love the twist in the glass which makes it super easy to grab and hold. Mine are 20 oz imperials and they are heavy.

I first encountered these glasses at an Irish bar in Brussels and have been on the lookout for them since then.

I happen to have one as well!

Did a little experiment to see which size I have, definitely the 20 oz glass. Tared it on a scale and filled it to the brim with water. It’s 20.4 oz.

I also have a Sam Smith’s imperial tulip pint glass. Did the same and that’s exactly 20 oz.

Not a perfect experiment, but it looks like maybe the new Guinness glass comes in 20 and 16 oz sizes. Makes sense though. Didn’t the older style tulip one’s come in two different sizes as well?

For what it’s worth I’ve always been served Guinness in the larger 20 oz glass at bars.
