I'm visiting NY from Australia in a month or two. I know during covid some breweries that hadn't really distributed out of their home states started distributing.
I'm just wondering if this is still the case, generally and specifically whether you can get Trillium or Treehouse in NYC (to take out, not drink on premises) now?

No Trillium or Treehouse in distro in NY. Lots of amazing beer is available, however.

Not to go at least. Maybe she/he’s willing to spend like $14 on a can of TH in a bar.

Agree with the amazing beer statement though, for sure.

Oh I know there's amazing beer in NY. I've spent far too many nights at OH. And I've had Trillium and Treehouse, but I wouldn't mind grabbing some cans to bring back home.
Is Equilibrium distributing in NYC now? What about Hudson Valley?
Any other great NY state breweries cropped up in recent years?

EQ and HVB both distributing somewhat (eg can find certain cans in bottle shops, grocery stores) but not every release and the options are limited vs. what’s available at the brewery/ via home delivery (both are shipping across NY/other states)

Based on the breweries you mention figure IPAs are your thing - Fidens probably the most chased name at the moment, cans are only released up in Albany (some limited drops at bars where they’re doing events, from what I’ve seen). Root + Branch is good, they do cans every ~2 weeks via Evil Twin Queens (follow R+B on IG - sales are around 5pm ET on Thursdays) - can also find on draft at both Evil Twin locations. I really like Obercreek, but they only sell limited cans at the brewery up in Wappingers Falls (most stuff is draft-only). There’s Drowned Lands, which I don’t have much experience with but people seem to like, and District 96 - both see some distro in NYC (bottle shops, Clinton Gourmet). Not new but Finback and Grimm are also good - can find cans in shops/grocery stores but go to the brewery for the best selection

just my thoughts, am sure others have recs as well - cheers!

Thank you. Glad to hear HV and EQ can be found in NYC, and that home delivery is available. Definitely not an option last time I was there.

You're right, IPAs are probably more my thing, but that's partially because I think that's the style where the very best beers in the US are still well in front of the very best beers in Australia. But I'm also keen on sours, if there's any breweries you can recommend.

Thanks for the reminder about Root + Branch. Absolutely love their stuff, but had completely forgotten about them.

I hadn't heard of Fidens, but their stuff sounds great.

If anybody is interested in some Australia beers (Wildflower, Boatrocker, Dollar Bill, Mountain Culture etc), happy to chat about some swaps.

Yeah, have happily spent that on certain cans in bars in NY - not knowing if i'll have a chance to try them again. Also, $AU14+ is what we pay for a really good local can in a bar in Australia anyway :slight_frown: . On the occasion that OH cans make their way here, we pay $AU20+ for a 3 month old can (to take out).

Yeah, as @hops_for_thought said, your best hope for the best cans to be brought home in the luggage are Clinton Gourmet (Hells Kitchen) and, I’d add, Bread and Honey (Midtown) and Good Beer (east Village). You’re not gonna find Trillium or Tree House at those places though. Small chance they’ll have Alchemist if it’s in the city at that point.

New York State has the best distro in the country and I don’t think it’s even close at this point.

For NY breweries you can easily get great hops from OH, EQ, HV, Grimm, Finback, KCBC, Drowned Lands, Thin Man, Common Roots, Unified Beer Works, Root & Branch, Beer Tree. I’m forgetting some players I’m sure.

And then in non-NY stuff there’s a treasure trove too. Tilted Barn and Dancing Gnome just started NY distro, we get all the VT stuff (Lawsons, Foam, Frost, Burlington), the Maine stuff (Bissell, Goodfire, Austin St, Battery Steele) and we also get Drekker, Timber, Weldwerks, Hop Butcher, Toppling Goliath, I could keep going here too.

In short and in seriousness: Bring a second suitcase.

Yeah, most of those breweries were pretty accessible in cans in NYC my last couple of visits, so keen to bring some different stuff home.

Good to know that Foam and Tilted Barn. I've wanted to try their stuff.

I've brought progressively more home over the last 4 or 5 visits. 68 cans was my best haul to date, and involved a second suitcase.

Tilted Barn and Foam trickle in to the City and Long Island so there’s no guarantee you’re gonna find those just to give you a heads up. Probably a better chance at Foam tbh. I just saw a Tilted Barn beer advertised for the first time like 2 weeks ago and, imo, was nothing special (Milo’s Phoenix).

Tin Barn > Drowned Lands imho, but both are good. They're about 5 min apart and
Eq is about 20-25 from there.

Going up that direction I'd put District 96 above both of those (unless you're not into NEIPA in which case Drowned Lands has more variety), plus it's closer to NYC by a not-insignificant amount. And then Industrial Arts and Two Villains are closeby if multiple spots are desired.

Liked all 96 I've had, haven't been there yet. It's about 45-50 minutes from Eq though,
the other two are about 20-25.

If I’m in NYC I’m taking advantage of the opportunity to drink Other Half in the taproom, walk 20 minutes to Finback, walk 3 minutes to Threes. Take another day to go to Williamsburg and visit Grimm, quick stop at Interboro then head to OH Domino Park. Maybe stop at Talea or KCBC. Treehouse is fine but I’d take the option of at least four of these breweries over their beer all day.

It depends on what you're comparing. Tin Barn has Drowned Lands beat on hazy IPAs and fruited sours, but Drowned Lands has a much wider range of styles.

Yeah, I always visit OH, right back to when they had the original taproom.

I just want to work in some other breweries I haven't been to. Particularly to take some cans back home.

I gotta say, I wasn’t overly impressed with what I got from Tin Barn end of February. The DIPAs were good but nothing like I can’t really get anywhere else and the stout I had (was supposed to be like a Mounds bar) was…dare I say…subpar. Everything I’ve had from DL, and their superior variety has been mentioned already, has been better.
