What year is this release? I had Sunday (2021). I think it was aged 30 months. I really enjoyed it, though, I got invited to a party halfway through the bottle, so I drank the last half at a 'social event'. One of the only 'special' beers I've drank with friends like that. Wonderful bourbon character in both nose and taste though.

If Cycle's Sundays are always barleywines, I will have to keep an eye out for other releases.

The bottle has no info, but Tavour said 2022. The last 3 Sundays were barleywine, stouts before that. Trying to talk myself out of looking for a 2021... These damn California liquor stores that ship are killing me!

Soured Barleywine, New Belgium Surly, is absolutely horrible.
So to add to my list,
I am NOT a fan of soured Barleywine!

I've had one soured Barleywine that was pretty good and I have funeralize from Tired Hands coming that sounds interesting, a barrel aged, mixed culture Barleywine. Brewed in the Fall of 2016 with what is still the largest grist we’ve ever produced, and a small pinch of freshly ground cardamom. Primary fermented in stainless steel with our house Ale yeast, and aged for nearly four years in barrels that had previously held Bourbon and Mead. Allowed to mature with our house mixed cultures during that long rest, and refermented in the bottle for a gentle, natural carbonation.

I was wanting a beer to just sit and sip tonight, and here's the winning choice. I've never been too fond of barrel aged beers, but this seems to work well enough. The bourbon flavor is there but not overwhelming; it seems to enhance the alcohol.

Iron Hill in Exton has a bourbon barleywine on tap that I've been avoiding, but this SN beer is making me rethink that.

Big thanks to @DIM for passing this one along. In a just world he would be featured on a commemorative coin, possibly by the Franklin Mint.

Im back on this thread. I dont drink much during the week, so slows down my contributions for sure. But this is a nice treat from @Resistance88 , Thank you!!! Smog City Bourbon Barrel Aged OE. 14.5% Perfect way to end a long day!

    Onto my review:

Im sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle=, waxed cap, poured into my snifter. This is a 2021 vintage.
Pours a slightly hazy chestnut color with a fluffy khaki colored head of 1 cm and fades to a sturdy surface layer after the pour. There are many active and fine streams of carbonation rising to the surface. Looks a fine beer and the head retention is solid for a higher ABV (14.5%).
Aroma is toffee and brown sugar with a good dose of bourbon. Some solid general booziness here too, and mixed with some dark fruit, raisin mostly to my nose. I dont get hops at all.
First sip reveals a medium body with a bit of sticky texture and very fine gentle carbonation. Physically this beer drinks a lot easier than I anticipated based on ABV.
Flavor is sweet up front with brown sugar, vanilla, and bourbon. I also get some raisin, sweet toffee (Werthers) and fig. This rolls to a little bitey booze and the bitterness on the finish is also booze not hops. Dries out on my palate on the swallow also, but still leaves some stickiness on my lips.
This is a fun barleywine with great flavor and dangerously easy to drink feel. Very glad to have tried this one and would definitely score more bottles in the future, should the opportunity present itself!

While under the influence of the demon barleywine last weekend, I got it into my head that I needed to see if there was any Old Guardian for sale in the wild. I didn't find any regular Old Guardian, but I did find some interesting vintage offerings for sale from two liquor stores in California. Not pictured is the 2017 Avery Fiel Al Estilo, barrel-aged Mexican-style barleywine that will use Agave syrup, chile peppers and malted smoked wheat, that I ordered but did not get.

    2015 Barrel Aged Old Ruffian
Barrel Aged, Old Knucklehead undated but last made in 2013??

The OG's both list an ABV that is lower than the beer that went into the barrels. Anyone have any ideas about that? The only one of these I've had before is the knucklehead which way back in 2008 I declared one of the best barleywines I've tried. Looking forward to opening these up in a couple of weeks once the sediment has settled.

I realize that I could post this elsewhere (and might get more/better responses due to a wider audience), but I thought this was a best first-shot...

What the fuck is a black barleywine? I've tried googling quite a bit, and even read up on the homebrew forum (which was surprisingly helpful, despite it really being just about the brewing). Seems like it's almost a cross between an english barleywine and a RIS, except that it leans towards barleywine flavors but includes quite a bit of roast due to the malts which give it the black color.

Has anyone had one? What can you tell me.

I think the first black barleywine I had was one of Sierra Nevada's 30th anniversary offerings back in 2010 which seemed like an American barleywine/stout hybrid. Since then I've several that called themselves black barleywine. Founders Nemesis from 2020, Anchorage Wendigo, and one that Boulevard called a black barleywine that was literally a blend of barleywine and stout.

I've also had plenty that just kind of look like a stout, are barleywines getting darker? Perhaps because so many are barrel aged?

As for a definition, yours sounds good to me.

Good day BAs! So this thread is still going on!!

I had an "English Barleywine" for my New Breakfast Beer today, courtesy of @woemad and NBS BIF #15.

Anniversary Ale: Year 2 from Lumberbeard Brewing. 16 oz can received in BIF #15, from @woemad (05/04/22). Stored at reefer at 38 degrees after processing. Reviewed 13/04/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Served at 52.7 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 55.5 degrees. Yes, I drank it on the cool side because I was excited to try it!
    Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), hazy.
Body – Medium Amber (SRM 12), opaque. Looks like a glass of dark caramel. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Small (Maximum one cm, aggressive center pour), bone, high density and fizzy, gone in seconds, leaving a 0.5 mm ring of bubbles and no cap.
    Lacing – None, as expected.
Aroma – 4 – Sweet, malty, caramel, a whiff of oil, no hops, no yeast, no bourbon.
Flavor – 4 – Begins sweet with caramel and molasses. No ethanol (16.2 % ABV according to what is printed on the label) taste or aroma up front although it strongly appears on the back end and has great staying power. Some bourbon also appears on the back end. Moderate gastric burning. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, a little thicker than water, soft carbonation. Feels a bit thin for the style.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated personal container.) Other than being sweet, the flavors are subdued, cowed into submission by the excessive alcohol. One thinks of Jeff Goldblum’s trite one-liners. The bourbon seems to be an afterthought. Overall, to my taste, lacks the expected complexity and mellowness. OK, maybe even good.
    Rating 3.82, rDev -4.5%

This is one that should be sat upon for a few years.

Deschutes Black Mirror is black Barleywine. It tastes like an American/English hybrid Meaning an English but you can taste some hops. It's a nice brew. It didn't remind me at all of a RIS.

Kicking off the long holiday weekend with Arcane Rituals. A combination of bourbon, brandy, and VSOP cognac barrels. Damn. I'm very excited for this one, love it when they mix barrels.

Just what I hoped it'd be. The barrels are prominent, I get some bourbon and plenty of brandy/cognac, can't quite tease these two apart but I taste plenty of boozy fruit. They also bring hints of vanilla and leather. An incredibly decadent base beer shines through as well. Quite sweet, with notes of toffee, brown sugar, cherry, figs, and so much more. I love the lingering boozy exhale. The body is full and sticky with light carbonation. Lives up to the hype.

I do just fine with Bigfoot every year but I'm curious and will find others to try.
'21 is lightly cloudy, pine in front, 16 mo old.

@DIM Finally did my review of Spiced BA Bigfoot and rated it a 4.41. I have to say this had to be one of the best BA beers i have had from SNBC. I really hope they bring this guy back down the road and it is really hard to beat the $5.00 per can pricing!
I still have to circle back to my Bigfoot vertical six pack and review with y'all.
    Cheers!

Yep, I saw your glowing review and we seem to have similar tastes. It's one of the reasons I opted to pay the craftshack premium. Sprang for that bourbon BA Old Guardian, at least in part because of you as well. Your reviews are bankrupting me sir!
