So I went out and grabbed a single of erdinger weißbeer from my local store and I pick up a bigger bottle, looms to be a 500mL. So I go about my day, get home and go to crack it open when I see a little label that says 11.2oz on the side and I think to myself "that's odd this is way bigger than the 12oz can I got too" but just assume it's super thick glass. Then I find out it doesn't all fit in my glass which I poured 12oz into yesterday and I become quite suspicious.

TLDR, I measured it out and the bottle is a 500mL with a label claiming 11.2 fl oz (about 330mL)

I believe that within the industry that's called a "mistake", sometimes an "error, labeling".

Since the barcode is on the rear label, probably didn't affect the price you were charged. Technically it's likely still a violation of US labeling law since it's an overfill.

Don't know if there's a TTB "finder's fee" sort of program which would allow you to share in the proceeds from the fine, but you could try:

I bet they already figured this out weeks ago, but they weren't about to recall them all to relabel. If their marketing is smart, they'll play this up in ads saying "Our bad" and showing a label saying "Really 500mL".

Did they accidentally add any esters or phenols to it?

It's a collectible! You could probably get like $3 from the right person for the bottle.

Some machine operator just stuck a stack of 12oz labels into the feeder while they were running 16oz bottles. No conspiracy here.

Not very collectible, then. All better beer cans will still have the pull or push tab in place (never mind they used the old fashioned can opener on the bottom.... no, I don't know why that's better... but I don't collect beer cans.)

Don't make my hoarder brain guilty haha I already recycled it, if I kept all the weird stuff worth a few bucks though my house would be a mess so it's for the best.

I've just never seen this before and I'd assume they'd be pretty uptight about it but guess the ATF or TTB whoever is in charge of this ain't anything like the FDA

I may or may not have bought an "opened" bottle of BCBS Prop on Ebay once, but they lied, it hadn't been opened, though I didn't give them a negative for lying.

Prop 2018 may be my 7th highest rated beer (nine-way tie). Obviously based entirely on nose.

I recently drank a Stille Nacht from De Dolle that said 750ml on the bottle. However, I can guarantee that it was a 325ml bottle. So, it goes both ways!

I'm pretty sure the TTB doesn't have an inspector on the night shift in the bottling department at the brewery in Erding, Germany, checking the labels as the bottles come off the line into cases or opening cartons checking each bottle as the containers come off the ships at the US ports. :grimacing:

(Altho', as noted by others above, a sleeve of printed beer labels contains a LOT of labels, so whether it happened at the brewery or a mislabeled pack from the printer, yours ain't the only bottle).

Maybe the workers at the brewery were imbibing a little too much Erdinger at the labeling department.
