I'll be down in Providence some time within the next month. I was hoping to pop into a brewery to either have a pint or grab some stuff to-go. Who is killing it down there? I know nothing.

For reference, I'm pretty open minded but lean more in the line of beers in the 4-6% ABV range. I like drinkability and typically avoid big and sweet beers.

I too like beers in the 4-6% range and can't stand big, sweet brews. Given that, I've found myself checking out Apponaug Brewing, which is just outside of the Providence line in Cranston.

As for Providence proper, yes, check out 'Gansett, if only for the fact that it's in a cool location. I'd also hit Moniker. Not gonna blow you away, but solid stuff (and right near Bayberry Beer Hall, which isn't a brewery, but is definitely worth checking out.

Despite the current selection of 3ximperial stouts…Origin specializes in low abv (outskirts of Providence)

Josh Bernstein recently touched up on them

I attended HomebrewCon 2019 in Providence and I visited a few breweries (taprooms)/pubs. I thought the beer scene there was nice/pleasant.

The only brewery (a brewpub) that I specifically remember is Trinity Brewpub. I recall enjoying both the beer and food there.

Right now what they have on tap:

    “ON TAP

    April 8, 2022
    Check out full descriptions here.

    • Kolsch - German Ale, 5.5%
    • Tommy’s Red, Amber Ale, 5.9%
    • RI IPA, English Style IPA, 7.8%
    • Hop Sway, NE IPA, 5.7%
    • Malt Master Flex, Altbier, 5.7%
    • Night at the Dunk, Cream Ale, 5.8%”
    https://www.trinitybrewhouse.com/

The Kolsch must be a regular brand for them in that I recall ordering it when I visited in 2019 and I really liked that beer.

If I was visiting Trinity today the Altbier would be the first beer I would order. I have only a few Altbiers left from my recent homebrewed batch and it will be a sad day when I drink that last bottle.

    Cheers to Providence!

Check out Buttonwoods which is adjacent in Cranston, and depending on the day, you might be able to get Origin Beer pours (on-site pours are Friday and Saturday only). I like Long Live a lot, but generally higher ABVs. Narragansett is solid and a cool place. Can get pretty crowded. Across the street from Moniker is Beer on Earth. Nice thing is that all these places are more or less 10 minutes apart.

Seconded. LL is my favorite in Providence and their lagers have stepped up recently but the Origin/Buttonwoods combo for 4-6% abv beers is a good option.

Had a few Apponaug (I think Czech Pils, Vienna and WC IPA) and they were well made. Is Mike Webster still the head brewer? From Tree House and Fox Farm.

Trinity Brewhouse and Union Station are older breweries that are a big part of the downtown Providence scene.

If you are flying into TF Greene Airport you are actually landing in Warwick R.I., if this is the case, I recommend nearby Proclamation Ale Company. Cheers.

will you have a car or are you limited to the Providence area? If you have a car/ride, take the trip to Tilted Barn. It’s 20 mins or so from Providence.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I’ve been to Trinity pre-many PC basketball games. I’ll actually be AT Narragansett. I should have led with that.

I’ve got some research to do! Well, technically I have Google Mapping to do.

Shaidzon is a bit of ride from Providence (40 mins or so), but a great place for lagers and traditional styles. Lager, British mild, table beer, etc. Nice outdoor beer garden (except for brief moments when the Amtrak rolls by) with live music on occasion as well. Also very close to Tilted Barn if you go that route. Tilted is known for their hoppy beers but they’ve made a dark lager a few times that is fantastic.

Shaidzon is my go to. If you go get the pils. Foolproof is also great. Very underrated. Tilted barn makes great ipas. I try not to go to them for reasons. Went to buy beer during covid and they made you order online. Even through the person had cooler of beer behind them. Would not sell beer.

My favorite is Long Live, but they are certainly heavy on the IPAs, fruited sours, and pastry stouts. Your best bet in Providence proper besides 'Gansett is probably the Moniker/Beer on Earth/Bayberry Beer Hall triumvirate on West Fountain Street, all within walking distance of one another. This is the current draft list at Moniker for reference:

Buttonwoods and Origin Beer Project in the same building is my recommendation just a stone's throw from the city line. Great stuff out of there.

Did they have the Bock available at Narragansett? That was their spring seasonal some years back, I remember drinking some of that stuff and enjoying it quite a bit. Still remember the green cans.

A bit late to this thread but no one mentioned Julian’s on Broadway. Excellent food, small curated draft list and tons of bottles. Haven’t been since the “before times,” but my wife and I and loved the place.

Shaidzon had some nice beers last time I swung by. Of course when I lived in RI there was literally only Trinity and Grey Sail (Proclamation opened the month I moved back to NY). Now there is plenty of great breweries.

Also the dark lager (Is This Still Lawn Boy) at Tilted Barn was fantastic (as is regular Lawn Boy).

Still securing a date on heading down, actually. I'm thinking it'll be mid-week next week. It'll be once I figure this out for sure that I'll get down with the Google Mapping and checking of hours (nothing worse than gearing up for a brewery visit and learning right before the Uber arrives that the brewery is closed -- like I did at Jester King two weeks ago ... yes I'm still salty about this)

    I should include this:

If there are any beer stores -- in case I'm there and breweries aren't open yet (which seems may be a problem) -- that sell some great PVD beers, lmk. Thanks!
