Happy New Beer Weekend and Happy BIF 15 share weekend! I finally joined the fun this go round after joining then bailing the fall one (lots going on). Well I couldn't be happier that I did join madness and I think I'm trapped for life now...the other week I received 4 boxes in three days, oh and then a week before that I also received another box. So 5 boxes so far...:grimacing: only 2 of those were from my target, the rest, just crazy people sending great beer, oh and an awesome glass, stay tuned for that one being showed off.

@ovaltine is trying to test my limits with the amount of monsters he has sent...lucky for me he also sent some good old tradition beers as well. So it is early and I'm gonna start slow with this 5% oatmeal stout...I remember reading your review of this one on NBW a month or so back and it caught my eye, I said to myself hey maybe it will end up being sent my way via BIF, well beer dreams do come true in BIF.

    Transient Ales - Broatmeal

Pours black, with a very slow forming head, I almost thought it was flat but then it’s slowly formed and built up. Beautiful light brown color to the head with some decent lacing.

Very strong nose of bitter dark chocolate, burnt toast, a little hint of some dark fruit, and just a hint of some sort of spiced bread.

Taste is very prominently dark chocolate/dark roast coffee for me, there is a prominent char/burnt note that really reminds me of Kalamazoo stout. The difference being this one is a little smoother and softer on the mouthfeel, I'm guessing the oatmeal (based on the name).

Beer drinks quite smooth, a little low on carb, it sort of reminds me of drinking cask so maybe this is intentional. It finishes nice and dry and has a very strong roast bitterness that lingers, which I am really enjoying. Just wow the aftertaste and feel just never go away, well after the sip it is like I'm still drinking it.

Great beer that is right up my alley @ovaltine, thanks for sharing so much damn good beer with me, and to think I haven't even drank half of them yet.

See you all in a little bit, in the meantime I'll keep lurking and getting asked, "why are you on your phone?" :stuck_out_tongue:

Review #2900 for me has now taken place. Super, super happy to finally be able to sample this barleywine. As an added bonus, a Chicago friend sent me a sample of a rye whiskey aged in the barrels that once contained this beer. A huge shout out to @FBarber for getting this beer in my glass.

    Revolution Brewing's V.S.O.J.

Pours a dark burgundy that reveals a remarkably clear transparency when held directly against a light. If not held against a light, or if poured in a dark room, the beer looks black. Moderately heavy oily legs form on the glass after a light swirl, foreshadowing a heavy, hearty beer. Head is two and a half fingers of khaki foam.

Aroma is raisins, fig, toffee, molasses, and dark fruits mashed together with leathery, spicy bourbon. Barrel adds additional char and heat, which is smoothed out well by hearty caramel, toasty, and bready malts. That dark fruit character really starts to swell up and become a much more major player in the aroma as the beer warms.

Flavor profile is fig, raisins, toffee, molasses, brown sugar, and hearty dark fruits. Grassy hops add some resinous hop presence, which introduces some pleasant variation to the profile that is not a sugary note, heavy malt, or bourbon. Bourbon is present throughout, but becomes much more present on the back half of the flavor profile, building up heat and complexity akin to the way a snowball builds rolling down a hill. Despite that build up, it never runs away with heat. Underneath it all is strong caramel, bready, and toasty malts.

Mouth feel is thick with a still effervescence, offering up some light bubbles at the start before smoothing out at the mid-way point. A very light silt adds some further texture, but really, it's smooth. The texture matches, both, the aging process output, and alcohol, suggesting this beer has been slowly pressed flat by the act of time and heavy alcohol.

Overall, a remarkable beer that pairs bourbon barrel complexity over a resounding barleywine. Regardless of notes, it's a remarkable beer for sipping, offering complexity and depth at every corner and crevice.

    Served in a 15.5oz Spiegelau tulip from a 12oz can. Canned June 29, 2021. 15% ABV.

    Score: 4.25 | 4.75 | 4.75 | 4.5 | 4.75 | BA Score: 4.7 | rDev: +0.4%

Since I had the opportunity, I went ahead and poured this side-by-side with sample of Piggyback's 6yr Rye aged in V.S.O.J. barrels. This sample is from barrel #1.

Dark coloration, with moderate oily legs after a swirl. Spicy rye on the cusp of the nose, with heavy barrel leading way to floral and mild bourbon and dark fruits behind. Complexity is dense, mixing in a little cake at the finish. Flavor profile brings a more mild profile, building spicy rye over oak, lemon zest, floral and mild dark fruits and bourbon. Spice simmers on the back of the palate long after a sip, emphasizing the rye base. Really smooth, with a crescendo from start to finish that resembles a wheelchair ramp - a linear rise from start to finish.

Since I don't really rate whiskey often, I'll put it this way - would I buy this again? Ehh, I'd probably seek out other ryes for the cost. The nose on this one is a highlight.

Sticking with the same brewery @BBThunderbolt also sent me OAT from Propolis Brewing. This is an oatmeal stout brewed with dandelion, chicory and vanilla.

Pours a dark brown color - almost black. Three finger fizzy tan head forms on the beer before quickly dissipating. No residual head remains after it dissolves. Aroma has notes of roasted malts, earthy notes, a touch of dirt, with some chicory coffee notes and just a fleeting hint of vanilla.

Taste brings notes of roasted malts, chicory coffee, some creamy malts, earthy hops notes, light vanilla bean - it's not sweet vanilla at all - and a light tangy note. There is a moderate earthy bitterness on the back end. Feel is light, somewhat thin, and very spritzy. I am no fan of the "thicc" stouts, but this one is just too thin for me. Spritzy, drier finish.

Overall it is a nice beer. The use of the foraged* ingredients makes this rather unique. I like it, but in the end Im left wanting a more full body and a stronger base stout.

*I dont think is quite the right term, but its all I could think of. They describe their brewery as brewing botanical farmhouse ales - so maybe botanicals was the word I was looking for?

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 4/13/22 but realease yesterday. Pours a very attractive hazy orange yellow with a solid finger sticky white head that leaves thin streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.75

Aroma is tangerine, papaya, peach, apricot, and white grapefruit rind. 4.5

Taste follows tangerine, papaya, peach, apricot, and a little grapefruit really well balanced.

Mouthfeel is above medium, soft gentle almost creamy carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 8.2% ABV it goes down extremely easy, but huge flavor. 4.5

Overall this excellent. I enjoy all in this series and this is no exception. Highly recommend this one from Stoneface Brewing Co.. Cheers all. 4.5

    Yo NBW!
Since Im off the yacht and back home and nit working hows about a New Beer Saturday!
Springdale (aka JA experimental sector) Do Your Art IPA -Idaho7/Amarillo.
Pours a hazy egg yolk orange with a creamy 2 finger off white head that settles to a thin ring with layers of lacing.
Aromas of sweet tangerine/orange, grapefruit and some herbal/ floral notes. A white wine like thing I get from Idaho 7 as well.
Taste follows with juicy citrus, hints of mango, grapefruit and pine bitterness, nice base of honeyed malts.
Feel is medium/light, really nice carbonation, full flavored for 6.5%, finishes nicely bitter and dry with that lingering honey malt. Really well balanced and tasty. Dig this one.
Cheers. Want to post a video of last nights shenanigans but I guess that frowned upon now. Best to the rest of your Saturday.[IMG]

Trimmed and Burning, oak aged sour with peaches, ginger, and yarrow. Best of Hands.

16oz pour at the brewery. On phone. For the record: no idea what yarrow tastes like.

Murky orange-gold, small head. Strong peach aroma. Ginger muted, something almost minty.

Taste is also peach forward, slight to moderate tartness. Almost a spruce characteristic here. Ginger for sure, but not overwhelming.

Mouthfeel is medium, smooth. Overall, pretty good.

Dark amber / orange body, clear; moderate carbonation; thick, off-white head, dense and creamy. Nice, rustic aroma; toasted grains with a hint of honey. Fantastic toasted grain taste with a slight bit of caramel; moderate hop bitterness; nutty. Medium body; smooth with a sticky quality; mild warmth.

This is a great amber lager, rich and flavorful with a pleasing overall warmth.

Mild Animals, at Best of Hands. It's a dark mild.

Pint at the brewery. On phone.

Dark brown but translucent. Small head. Smell is nutty and roasted coffee. Burnt toast, almost.

Taste is roasted grains foremost, nutty bittersweet second. Something very satisfyingly umami about it.

Mouthfeel is leaning toward thick. Overall, really nice.

Brewers Notes: Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

Pitch black liquid , dense thick, rich, creamy taupe foam cap atop a brown foam layer, scant lacings

Aroma of roast malts , coffee, char, cocoa nibs , a gravitas deservi8ng of an Imperial stout

Taste of coffee, roast malts , bit of bitterness , hint of cocoa nibs

Low sudsing, hint of alcohol , bitterness lingers on the back of the tongue

    Great beer, thanks @Beersnake1

Now one from @Mbgreg received in our ongoing chaos: NBS BIF #15 Just one of the many he crushed me with.

Wild Leap Craft Beer's Side Bae DIPA

12 oz can Citra Cryo & Simco Cryo no date.
Slightly turbid, golden hued. Fluffy white head. Decent retention at first, tapers off to a thin film. Slight lacing.
Orange zest, grass, pineapple lead. Some mildly sweet grain notes come through as well.
Flavor is pineapple upfront with citrus, grass, hints of herbal pepper, and maybe some mango. Quite nice.
Mouthfeel is active but on the lighter side. Mildly prickly carbonation.
Overall, a pretty nice ride. I'd like a hint less on the carbonation.

Pühaste / Zagovor / AF Brew - Trinity In Black / Trinity In Black Bourbon BA

Imperial Stout with tonka, vanilla and cinnamon (aged in Bourbon barrels), from Estonia (12.5 / 13.5%).

I've been meaning to do a non/BBA side-by-side of the same beer like this for a while now and it's been quite an interesting experience, especially with a brew like this that has a few additives thrown in.

The original brew is already quite rich and complex here, with the tonka and cinnamon standing out particularly, giving quite a sweet and spicy character to this that is balanced nicely by some lightly roasted and bitter accents, but still perhaps feels just a little overdone.

The barrel-aging mellows out those spices quite nicely, while they certainly still make an impression, but being a bit more overshadowed by a rich and warming bourbon presence that perhaps turns this just a little too sweet and boozy though. The vanilla comes out more as well, but overall this still maintains quite an excellent balance, with some oaky highlights adding some character. Body and mouthfeel feel a lot more full here as well, with this feeling like a tremedous improvement over the original version overall.

@Ozzylizard was my sender in this latest BIF, and among all the amazing beers he sent me, I was the most excited to try this one, which he brought back directly from the brewery in Germany a few weeks ago. It hasn't been sitting on a ship, or stuck on the shelf of a local liquor store for three months, it came directly from the freaking brewery. Add in that I love smoke beers, and I'm giddy like a little kid on Christmas. Let's get to it...

    Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen
    [IMG]
    4.55/5 rDev +12.1%
    look: 4.75 | smell: 4.75 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Purchased by @Ozzylizard directly at the brewery in Germany. Appearance is a reddish brown that is semi-translucent. My pour was pretty neutral, but resulted in loads and loads of dense, khaki colored head with outstanding retention and lacing. Even 5 minutes after pouring this I almost don't want to disturb it it looks so wonderful.

Before I get into the aroma, full disclosure that I love smoky beers. With that said, holy crap I love how this beer smells. It's all campfire smoke but in the best possible way. It's one dimensional in that it's all smoke, but there's a lot of complexity within that smoke. Between the appearance and the aroma, I'm practically salivating in anticipation of what this will taste like.

The taste does not disappoint. It's smoky malts up front, but less smoky than the aroma. There are some really nice malt notes mid-palate, then all kinds of different campfire notes over an extraordinarily long finish. There's a peaty, Islay scotch vibe going on, which I love. Very tasty beer. Medium feel and smooth going down.

Overall, this is outstanding. If I had enough skill to rate purely to style, I'd have to think this is close to perfection. As it is, rating more to taste, this is one of the best beers I've had in quite some time.

    ----------------------
Bob, thank you for sending this my way. GREAT beer!
