    Good morning/afternoon all.

It’s been a while since I haven’t had a proper Leffe Blonde. Here it is. Drink easy, good and super cheap:

House cleaning underway…the dogs and I are in my office trying to keep from being underfoot…now drinking Parabola (2022). Aged in 12 year old Heaven Hill barrels (Elijah Craig?):

Bottled 2022. Poured at 53°. Black with ruby see-through body; dark fizzy tan head; no cap retention; thin ring at best; small spots of lace and heavy legs on swirl. Oaky bourbon and caramel on nose; boozy retro-nasal. Roasted chocolate malt; bourbon and spicy oak/vanilla; dark stone fruit (cherry) middle; licorice as beer warms; oaky dry finish. Alcohol burn on tip of tongue; moderate minus carbonation; full minus body; full mouth warmth from 14.1% abv; dry wooden barrel tongue coating. Overall, sooo much better than last year’s version with the rye; once you get past the booziness, the usual barrel aged suspects stand in line alongside dark cherry, char, coffee and a smidge of vanilla; complex, multiple layers of flavors; my take…this beer needs to rest awhile to let the alcohol mellow and hopefully become a bit player in the show, allowing the base and barrel flavors to shine.

    4.25 | 4.5 | 4.75 | 4.75 | 4.75
    Updated Score: 4.66 rDev +1.1%

Today’s score is similar to rating for a previous year, appearance being a drop-off. A great beer from perhaps the best barrel aging program in the country. Cheers y’all!

I suspect I will stay home today and water new plantings and drink beer…Cheers gang!

    Beers from yesterday...

Was at one of my favorite dive bars in town, Under The Volcano (also arguably my favorite book). Had more than one Chimay White, it was drinking really good.

Wandered over to a restaurant and had some Crab Cakes. Pretty good, decent spot, but would have been just as good to stay at Under The Volcano for steak night, but what you going to do?

Anyway, was on this side of town to see Hernan Diaz and Alejandro Zamba for the first in person Inprint event in Houston since Covid. This is a big deal for me, as its a great way to meet authors and hang out at cool locations around town. This was held at the new renovated Brockman Hall for Opera at Rice University, and its a pretty stunning spot. Diaz's new novel Trust is out, which I can't wait to start. His first book In The Distance is one of my favorite recent novels, and Zamba's book, Chilean Poet, sounds incredible (I hadn't heard of him before the event).

    Anchorage Brewing Co. -- Blessed
    Imperial stout
ABV: 15.5%; Pouring temperature: 41 °F; bottling date: unknown

    4.19/5 rDev -11.6%
    look: 3.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Dark, inky body, opaque; carbonation burbles percolate above a flat crown with no head. Very rich, powerful aroma; fudge and milk chocolate; roasted and charred grain; moderate sweetness. Very sweet and spicy taste; cocoa and milk chocolate; vanilla and cinnamon; coconut; raisins and figs; fairly bold alcohol presence simmering beneath the sweetness. Heavy body; slick and chewy; very rich residual sugar feel; some alcohol warmth noted, increasing as the beer warms.

This beer exudes decadence and richness. The overall sweetness is a bit overpowering. I think the alcohol notes are more from the beer's ABV rather than anything from the barrel aging. The lack of any head is also a minus. Still, taste-wise, and overlooking the dominating sweetness, this isn't a bad imperial stout, just lacking some depth and complexity that it really could have it had a bit more balance between the malts, coconut, vanilla, and barrel-aging used in its creation.

Sounds like Firestone Walker released a great Parabola year @DoctorZombies , was hoping you reviewed it. Still hoping to come across the 2021 Rye version; I can't resist rye.

Sounds (and looks) like you had a great evening @champ103 ! I only had a brief visit in Houston once. Thought it was just a gigantic Schaumburg, though your adventures over the years here prove I couldn't be more wrong.

Speaking of wrong, thought about pouring both of my remaining Saint Patrick's Day Guinness bottles, as the single pour is too short in this imperial pint glass.

    Guinness Extra Stout

Time will tell if I can resist throughout the remainder of today.

Yeah it was a really good event, great day out. When I first moved to Houston, I was living in the suburbs, and I couldn't stand it, ha. When I finally moved into a cool little historic neighborhood about 3 miles from downtown, I started to really enjoy the city and discover a lot, and if you want to do it, there is basically something interesting going on everyday :sunglasses:

Time for my Lagunitas Maximus Colossal IPA while my 15 1/2 year old AKC Crocker Spaniel, Lily looks on. Her sister, Jennifer, passed away about 7 months ago and it's taken the past 6 months for her to get over the loss. They had never been apart before that.
