That is a great article. Lew always had a way with words and foul language. I didn't catch the link when it was first posted. Has I done so then I would have been pleasantly surprised (as I am now) to read Lew again because I thought I read somewhere about 10 years ago that he had died. Now I know 'the rest of the story.'

Perhaps, but it's quite the omission to end by saying "that's the bock story," then open a Genesee Bock and say nothing about bock beer being quite different in America today compared to Germany. I don't know the gravity stats of Genesee Bock, but I wouldn't assume that it's comparable to what makes a Bock a Bock in Germany.

Ack! No. It was probably 10 years ago that I met up with him for a couple beers here in Northern Illinois. Still going strong.

Always gotta play the contrarian, don'cha?

(oh, wait -- that's usually me )

Besides, I said dispute anything said, not not said.

If so, then I'd have to disagree with that label... but I won't. It's a curse. Just ask my wife. I was actually doing a good job holding it in until he opened a beer just a hair higher in ABV than Bud after saying that such beers are big strong German lagers.
Yeah, yeah. I know. I know. (See, not contrarian there either.)

The breadth and width of that whole article, and that's what you zero in on? Man -- there's so much more being said in that whole rant than just Genesee (even Troeg's and Schlenkerla* mentioned in the first paragraph) -- and you don't really even care about "styles."

*FWIW, Schlenkerla Fastenbier is only 5.9.

Yep...That's why I never posted a Fastenbier to this thread. At least I don't think that I did.

(I had one on the 1st day of Lent and one on the last day. I was sort of surprised that I didn't have any more during Lent)

I happened to run into him once in Berwick, PA (at One Guy's, which became Berwick Brewing) a bunch of years ago. We chatted for a very short while, while we enjoyed some of Guy's beers.

In all fairness, Bryson specifically talks about having Schlenkerla Urbock in his stash. ("I know I’m looking at my stock of Tröegs Troegenator and Schlenkerla Urbock with a considering eye.")

No reference to the weaker Fastenbier

Speaking of--I do find it a bit interesting that Schlenkerla's description of it references the yeast as being the 'nourishing' aspect, rather than the strength.

I really enjoyed the Fastenbier when I was able to get it a few years ago. I hope it shows up on the shelves here again next year.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply he mentioned the Fastenbier, just using that as a beer in the same seasonal vein as Bocks, yet lower in ABV.

Will we 'hear' more this weekend in the Dark Lager tasting thread?

    Prost!

And... I just learned that Hofbrau Maibock dropped locally. Just checked last week and the guys in the beer section of the store hadn't heard anything new from the distro.

Nothing like May beer in June.

    Haven't confirmed it's this year's batch, either.

I hope it's this year's batch, regardless of it being late.

In the way of other good news, the Maibock from my local brewery that I reported above as being dumped because it went bad just showed up at the brewery today. Bad communication with the server led her to believe it had been dumped per what she told me 3 weeks ago. I was at the brewery for lunch today, and so was the brewer so I asked him what happened. Turns out that he decided the beer wasn't ready at its scheduled release date (they release it every year for Mothers Day, not May 1st), so he held it in the lagering tank longer until today. Yes, it's as good as ever, and a relief that I'll be drinking it for a few months (based on previous years demand).

Just got confirmation that it is... but I won't be able to get back to that store for a few days... hope it lasts.

And FWIW -- I've been enjoying a few good local Maibocks this year -- good to see the style maintaining a presence.

Got into the vicinity of the store with the HB Maibock -- looks like they got 2 cases.

Same store that had about 12 cases of the Winter Spezial. Supply line troubles?

Nonetheless -- big, rich, toasty, bready malt going down so smooth at 7%. Good that some things don't change.
