Your thoughts. Do you like it or dislike it when breweries wax their bottle caps for high end, one-off, or special brews?

For me, the presentation can be lovely but it's such a pain in the butt to cut away the wax to open and drink it. So my answer is "No, don't dip it in wax "

I dislike wax. I don't like the extra expense, I don't like the effort to remove it, and I don't like disturbing any settled sediment while dealing with wax.

There aren't nearly as many bottles with corks and cages as there used to be thankfully. Maybe wax will go in the same direction. Or maybe some wise guys, looking at you Anchorage, will start waxing corked and caged bottles.

I'm of the opinion that everyone does it wrong except for Side Project. Side Project puts a pull-tab in the wax that results in a clean removal of the wax with a single pull. Anything else that requires a separate tool is poor quality, and quite frankly, simply lazy in comparison.

I've seen some really bad wax applications, I mean literally the thing was literally smeared melting putty, or rock candy..

But when they do it right it is so satisfying...

I'm a fan. It literally takes an extra 10 seconds to open. I just use a utility knife and cut 2 or 3 chunks under a section of the cap - enough to get a bottle opener under the cap.

I agree some wax is more of a pain in the ass than others (against the grain bo and luke comes to kind as being almost as hard as plastic). And then some are almost like glue and leave your hands sticky (royal oil comes to mind). But a the average wax beer is hardly an inconvenience and kind of builds to the excitement of opening a more "special" beer. Voodoo wax I'm most familiar with and its NBD to open.

Pretentious. Unnecessary. No tangible benefit. PITA to open. What are we trying to achieve here? Hoity-toity marketing hype, IMHO.

I wouldn't mind real wax, but this plasticized concrete crap has no place on my beer bottles. I really shouldn't be playing with knives since I'm on blood thinners, but sometimes that's the only way. I have an opener that does good on the softer stuff at least.

Bottle wax seems like a great way to get people to pay more money for a beer than they would if it didn’t have wax.

Wax isn't enough. I prefer bottles with no openings.

I think wax is classy, but I agree with previous posters that the hard plastic type wax is just terrible. It’s a doctors visit waiting to happen.

I also would like to rant against Three Floyds Dark Lord wax jobs where they have long strings of wax drippings running down the bottle- that stuff breaks off when handling and I find it in parts of my house years later.

To all of you saying its a pain in the ass to open ..did you just come out of a coma and suffering from severe muscular dystrophy?
Jokes aside... get some exercise in on those arms . It's just as easy as prying open a fucken bottle Cap.
    Make incision, pry open.

i guess we need to have something to talk about here besides how ipas are inceesenantly taking over.

My answer: let brewers do whatever they want
