12oz can canned 4/11/22 into a pint glass.
L: Pours a chill hazed straw gold, well carbonated w/a 1" off white soapy head. Good retention, some thick sticky lacing. Well carb'd until end of pint.
S: Fruity Pebbles kids cereal, berries, citrus, orange, pineapple, lightly bready, "spicy hops", very light alcohol as the beer warms.
T: Orange, green apple, pineapple, a hint of lemon bread, lemon rind, lightly floral. Gentle bitterness lingers. Citrus rind holds the key to the bitterness. Malts are somewhat in the back seat.
F: A fairly bright, juicy, med-bodied mouth feel w/a med-long moderately drying finish. There's a slight grainy grit at the very end. Overall it is smooth.
O: A fruity tasting wet pale ale that is more hop forward and crisp. It has a lightly sharp and bright feel overall w/plenty of citrus to back it up. Big taste but somewhat light in body. Easy drinking and very good in it's style.

Have a good Sunday funday. I was up watching TV til 8am then I slept to 3pm. Can't believe I've never seen buck rogers before. It's like disco crossed with star wars in a good way.

We are at ocean isle fish Co. Another diamond in the rough. No indoor seating with the wait list. We sat outside at the tiki bar.

Heigh-ho NBW friends. A lot of gardening was done today. Mix of fun and aggravation, but we got a ton done. Good thing as we are a bit behind on much of it. Smoked a pork shoulder overnight into the afternoon, and it came out nicely. Peach nectar and Carolina vinegar sauce injection, pretty simple sweet rub, and the straight NC sauce for the table.

So tonight's victim I think might be me. In fairness, since there's no date on the can I do not know how old this beer is...

Aeronaut Passionfruit Velvet Oblivion. It is proclaimed by the brewery to be a treat of passionfruit and blood orange in a milkshake IPA - an extravagant concoction...sumptuous tropical fruit taking center stage, subtle hop character.

I was wondering where the milkshake part was on the pour, and evidently it was lurking in the bottom third or less of the can. I think the pictures shows the cloud rolling down, but maybe not the chunky bits. The head was nice, but the glop from the last of the pour created a yellow spot...hmmm...Mr. Zappa said watch out where the huskies go... Basically I think this is an ugly looking beer.

The smell isn't bad. The passionfruit and blood orange are definitely present, but it essentially ends there. One dimensional - well, I guess two...

The taste is essentially carbonated fruit juice. I am a fan of passionfruit liquer - maracuja sno cones were a favorite when I played in Portuguese bands. But it isn't working with the blood orange - there's a clash going on that is bordering on the unpleasant. There is no malt to speak of, but a touch of vanilla sweetness that actually helps a little. I think the description by the brewery is quite misleading.

The feel is slightly to the medium side of things, but not as silky and smooth as others I have had in this style.

Overall, not a beer I need to revisit. The only caveat is no canning date, but I don't see anything age related in what I see, smell, and taste. Aeronaut seems to get pretty good reviews overall, so maybe this isn't their best work - I hope for them that it is far from their best effort. Struggling to be nice and find a reason for this to be above a 3, but my supply of nice must be equal to George Nada's bubble gum stash. I think this beer is a decisively below average example, I do not believe it is age-related, and the misrepresentation in the description is at the least annoying.

Ya win some, ya lose some...

Back from my brothers house where we all got together for grilled food and my nephew's third birthday. A great time, but now I'm exhausted, the house is finally quite so it is finally time for a closer.

This one from @ovaltine sent to me in the current BIF 15, it is a beer I've heard of and knew of for a long time but never tried, until now, this one is from 2020 according to the can. Tonights Sunday Night Sipper...

    Revolution - Straight Jacket

Pours a leathery brown with really nice hints of red, especially when held to light. Crystal clear, nice off white creamy head to start, settles to a ring and cirrus clouds of thin thin off white in the middle.

Smell is beautiful, caramelized sugars, leather, oak and bourbon, even picking up some coconut I sometimes get from bourbon; maybe even a little bit of red apple skin. You can smell its high ABV but not in a boozy or ethanol type of way.

Taste just as pleasant as the nose, and perfectly balanced. I get the same caramelized sugar with the red apple skin; followed up by leathery bourbon and oak; I remember always saying Jack Daniels had a leather quality to it, that is what this beer gives off to me. The sweetness is just the perfect amount and melds so well with all the flavors.

Big body but insanely smooth; it has a really creamy soft carbonation to it. There is no heat other than a super slow building warmth in the back of the throat. There in interesting little tannin bite that I get in the back of my throat as the sip goes down.

I can see why this beer gets so much talk...it is very easy to enjoy and sip on; it is complex yet simple and so smooth. A pleasure to have tried this one, thanks Mike.

Next up is Pastry Oatmeal Stout from Black Hat Brew Works. This beer is compliments of @WunderLlama in BIF 15.

Poured at fridge temp from a can. Pours very dark brown - almost black. Head in abundance! Took a while for it to calm down. The nose is roasted malts, oatmeal, oat milk, fudge, cookies, and bread.

The taste is fairly mellow. Smooth oatmeal cookie, vanilla, milk chocolate, roasted malts, and a touch of dark fruit.

Mouthfeel is fairly light. Overall, a nice easy drinking oatmeal stout!

New (but old) barleywine Sunday! Bluegrass Billionaire from Clown Shoes. Given to me by the person who runs my local shop. From 2016.

Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours an opaque brown with a reddish hint. Minimal head. The nose is dominated by barrel and fruit. Toffee, bourbon, plums, raisins, figs, a bit of sherry, and some wood. Incredible nose.

The taste is fantastic. Toffee, bourbon, leather, figs, port, maple, walnuts, and booze. The alcohol is not hidden on this one. The barrel is also quite dominant, which is great. Really nice tasting beer.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. The aftertaste is sweet with a bit of leather. Overall, a wonderful barleywine that has aged very gracefully.

Taste follows Heath bar, toasted coconut, vanilla, and cacao nibs. 4.25

Mouthfeel is above average, gentle carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 10.0% it goes very easy. 4

Overall slightly less carbonation than I prefer and maybe a little thinner than I prefer, but still a nice stout. 4.25

Since tomorrow is a day off, I think another new beer review is in order. Prairie Artisan Ale's Double Vanilla Noir. I purchased this bottle locally several months ago and have been waiting for a good time to enjoy it.

Poured at 61° into a stemless stout glass. It pours a dark mahogany/walnut color. The frothy, toffee colored cap fizzled away quickly. It smells of dark chocolate, freshly-brewed coffee, vanilla beans, molasses, nutty char, and bourbon. The primary flavors are vanilla and bourbon although the dark chocolate is ever-present in the background. While the coffee adds acidity and there is also bitter char, the overall taste is on the sweet side. However, it doesn't drink like it's gimmicky or adjunct-laden. The flavors work well together. You can taste the alcohol heat. It's mouth feel is rather thin for a high gravity stout. You can definitely feel the 13.4% ABV. Sip it slowly and let it warm. Overall, while not quite at the level of Prairie's finest stouts, Double Vanilla is a treat and is well worth seeking out.

5.5% English stout with Maine oysters by Noble Beast Brewing Company and Bookhouse Brewing.

The stout pours black as night. Small head that quickly dwindles to a small ring at the glass edge. Carbonation is modest, but mouthfeel is solid.

I didn’t read up on this beer despite it being brewed at a local brewery that I like. The nose made me double take. A Rauchbier? No, it’s a stout but the smoke dominates the aroma. Also present is a briny smell and charred barley. That reads stranger than it smells.

Taste is more along the lines of an English style stout: malty char fuels the flavor and only a wee bit of bitterness at finish. Once you’ve smelled the oysters and shells, then the taste shows. The smoke brings everything together.

An interesting beer that has converted me into a believer.

Can poured into a Nordic Ipa glass

Brewers Notes: Brewed in collaboration with our friends at the historic Eggenberg Brewery in Austria. Unfiltered golden hue with a crackery malt character. Sourdough and lemon zest mixed with a classic floral herbaceousness derived from hops brought over by the Eggenberg team from the Mühlviertel region of Austria.

Clear golden liquid , active microcarbonation streams, capped by a soapy white one finger foam cap , settles to a layer with spotty lacings

Aroma is malts, hint of lemon

Taste is crackery , sourdough bread, hint of lemon ,

Mouthfeel is quenching, refreshing, semi dry finish, gentle hop nibble

    Good beer

So I had this one a bit earlier, but I'm just now getting to write up my thoughts. This is Bitburger x Deschutes - Dry Hop'd Zwickel.

    Canned 1/27/2022

Pours a lightly cloudy burnished orange color. Huge billowy off-white head forms on the beer, lingers for a few moments, then slowly, but steadily dissipates leaving just a thin layer of foam on the top of the beer. Aroma has notes of citrus and floral hops, a bit of grain and rye bread.

Taste has notes of rye bread, grain, bready malts, light citrus and floral notes, and a spicy herbal, earthy hop note on the back end. A touch of malty sweetness. Feel is medium bodied, smooth, and a tad bit chewy. Semi-dry finish.

Overall it's an interesting combination of the old world and the new world. It's a fine beer, but honestly did not grab me like I hoped or expected. I was fine to drink the one can and not have any others.

This will be likely by my closer for the evening: Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. - Term Oil S'mores. This is my second Term Oil variant I've had the chance to drink, and the first one was really well executed, so I have high hopes for this one.

Pours a pitch black color, thicc and viscous. Thin, weak, fizzy mocha colored head. Head dissipates quickly leaving no residual head. Aroma is incredible - rich, clear notes of graham crackers, cocoa, milk chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and marshmallow. What I am not getting in the nose is any barrel character. That being said, as pastry stouts go, this is really nice.

The taste is interesting - so the underlying stout is quite robust, and roasty with a prominent earthy hoppy bitterness on the back end. And all of that comes through even with the rich, sweet flavors coming through and the barrel aging. Over that, there are notes of graham cracker, vanilla, marshmallow, chocolate, cocoa, and a touch of caramel. There is a subtle oakiness with some light bourbon barrel presence coming through. I'm left wanting more barrel presence on this, but the truth is, I think it is really an impossible ask with this level of additive flavors. Feel is thick, viscous, and quite creamy. Smooth and thicc. Medium carbonation. Somewhat drier finish for how sweet this is.

Overall I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand, it's a really nice pastry stout that expertly nails each of the flavors in a s'mores. On the other hand, for a beer they described as "barrel forward" I was left wanting so much more from the bourbon barrels. If you weren't looking for it you probably would have missed it ... although Like I said, perhaps it's just an impossible ask for a beer with this many additives.

Got back to the hotel around 9pm. The "old man and the sea" burger was outstanding. It has fresh caught fried shrimp on the burger. I did listen to the Hemingway short story this year. American Pie is on the Starz channel.

Sweetwater 420 Imperial IPA. Best before 9/22/22. Great head retention and lacing. Aromas and flavors of big red grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, mango, melon, berries, citrus peel/rind, wood, cannabis, peppercorn, pine, caramel, cracker, toast, roast, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus rind, herbal, grassy, roasted bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium full body; balanced creamy/bready malts, sticky hops, and some resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Long drying finish with no cloying/astringency. Increasing warmth of 9.1% after the finish. Very drinkable for the abv, darker/roastier than expected on malts, so pretty unique contrast with the hops. Lots of dank and earthy character from Centennial, Cascade, Columbus, Mosaic, Sultana hops. A unique but well made east coast style DIPA. 3.9

Breakside - Wanderjack. Many of my PNW folks have raved about this. Finally, I know why.

16oz can served in a tulip. Dated 05/10/22. Bought it at Chuck's Hop Shop Central District last night.

Pours clear dark gold with a smallish head and plenty of carbonation. Smell is very nice -- pine and grapefruit are the loudest notes, but there's a little bit of a tropical vibe in there, too.

Taste is a very nice balance of honey and fruit juice sweetness with strong pine resin bitterness kick.

Mouthfeel is in between medium and light, very smooth, a bit of a dryness in the finish. Overall...this is really good, definitely one of those beers you could drink pint after pint and be surprised with how good each one tasted.
