Same here, but I also feel that way about Old Raspy. And it's way too thin and doesn't have enough of that roasty flavor. Founders Imperial Stout is my favorite.

Happy Thursday everyone…I’m drinking a nice imp stout I think you all would appreciate so here it is. Sent to me in the current NBS BIF this one comes from Indiana via @ovaltine

    Spoiler alert….it’s delicious

Bare Hands - Phantom Ships & Seas

Pitch black, slow and quiet viscous pour, slow and dense forming light brown head; settles to a see through layer of same creamy light brown. Swirling around that creamy head clings to the glass and oh so slowly goes back down. A beautiful beer.

At first smell there is a noticeable dark fruit note and some hops; followed up by some wafer like chocolate.

Ok here is where this beer really steps apart; there is the same dark fruit and hops in the taste. Then with no indication from the nose an insanely rich creamy dark dark chocolate taste that lingers. Couple with the dark fruit it’s almost verging on like chocolate cherries. The hops again come back in the finish.

Big body, viscous, low smooth and creamy carbonation with a very appropriate nice kiss of bitterness on the finish

well...one more before I open a barleywine tomorrow. Surly BBA Darkness 2021 vintage, 12% ABV. thought about holding onto this one, but this dang thread is really encouraging me to open imperial stouts....hope youre happy @Resistance88 !!
Big bottle + Thursday night = only beer for me tonight!

    onto my review:
Sampling a 2021 vintage of this beer. Pouring from a cellar temp waxed 750 ml bottle into my snifter. Picked up the beer on a shelf at a beer shop in central PA.
Beer pours a black coffee color and only the faintest hints of light pass through the edges of my glass. A dense creamy tan head of 2.5 cm foams up. This foam fades to a sturdy surface covering and leaves great windowpane lattice as it slides down the glass.
Aroma is, well, bourbon. Some vanilla, brown sugar, and dark chocolate fudge are in there too. I also get some charred wood. But bourbon dominates the nose. Seems good quality bourbon too, based on the nose. Also checks out on brewery page as 12 year old Elijah Craig barrels were used
First sip reveals a medium body with fizzy carbonation that does tingle my palate a bit. Texture is a bit on the slicker side and there is a good dose of warmth on the finish that lingers after each swallow.
Flavor is rich and malty with fudge and dark chocolate with hints of molasses mixing in. Not really sweet chocolate notes anywhere. I also get a bit of roasted malt and again the charred wood. Bourbon kicks in flavor wise about mid swallow and then this is the flavor that lingers. I dont get any hop character on this beer.
The booze is a bit hot making for a sipper, but I really do enjoy this beer, if you like big beers and bourbon, and cannot lie! then this beer is for you!

    4.5 in the BA DB

Have you tried BA Old Rasputin? The hops bitterness is mellowed out almost completely. Seriously tasty stuff. Of course, I enjoy regular Old Rasputin so take what I say accordingly.
    Cheers!

The barrel-aged variants are really good, especially at that price point.

Paperback Brewing - Bourbon Barrel Aged Death By Chocolate . Imperial stout with pecans, vanilla , coconut and cocoa nibs. Unknown ABV
A good friend works at this brewery. Had a long chat at a table with head and assistant brewers the other day. Can you Guess what i talked about?
A keg of this was found somewhere inside the brewery and no one knew it still existed.

Nose - Dark 70% Chocolate assault followed by hints of vanilla sweetness. Very faint oaky smell . All chocolate in this one. Not one hint of coconut on nose( which i am not mad at)

Look - poured out black with deep brown on edges and Settles into glass like used motor Oil.
Taste - like nose is Chocolate bomb with sweet vanilla and picking up nutiness. Waves of roasted malt come by and go . Not picking up coconut on taste either. Reminds me a bit of old school Wootstout but a little less aggressive. Prolly a lighter abv but ABV was unknown cuz keg was unmarked. I think it may be around 9-10 %.
There was a version of this released before but they don't know if this was the one they tapped . They weren't selling growlers of this but what are friends that work at brewries for , right??

Mouthfeel - a little bit on thin side but drinks very easy. Sits around for a few seconds and then ready for another gulp! Im for sure knocking this can down.

Overall 4/5 . This can easily be a daily drinker. Id give it 4.25 if barrel presence was more prominent. Its like drinking a devils food cake .

I don't know, the ba Rasputin batch from last year just never showed up anywhere in Humboldt County. I asked at a couple stores if they could get it and I think it was already gone from distributors by the time I asked. I haven't seen any of the small bottle batches
