Last one, @BBThunderbolt crushed this one - if I have a “beer nerd sweet spot,” this style is it. Phenomenal stuff, IMHO.

Beautiful golden copper color with a creamy white head that sticks around a bit and provides nice lacing throughout the journey with this beer. The nose is old school WCDIPA, with fruity citrus and resiny pine, and some caramalt. I am salivating.

And I am not disappointed , because this is all about the hops and malt and gravitas of this impressive beer. There’s grapefruit, ripe tangerine, huge resiny pine, and a substantial caramalt flavor at the back of the palate. I could drink a keg of this.

The mouthfeel is full and substantial, and more than a little drying. Absolutely love it, and need more of it, because this is truly outstanding, IMHO.

Can from @Beersnake1 poured into a Spiegelau ipa , another new brewery for me

Clear copper liquid capped by a three finger off white foam mountain, settles to an island of foam , spotty lacings

    Aroma is herbal , dank

Taste is dank , herbal , malts

Low sudsing , gentle hoppiness, subtle hop bite, smooth, strong

Good beer, I don’t usually like dank beers, this one I do like

We're excited. This is the closest we've lived to each other since she was in grad school (she is 54 years old). Her boys are very nice, and share many of my interests (not beer drinking yet).

It has been nice reading about so many new beers already today. A busy morning to a small place called Storybook Land in Egg Harbor Township NJ for my nephew's 3rd birthday. It was just my brothers family and ours to celebrate his birthday and it was some great family time. Now more exhausted then normal I finally join you all with a new beer. I mentioned earlier I was hoping to have a new Schilling beer and I do...poured in one of my favorite glasses that @FBarber so generously sent me in the current NBS BIF.

Schilling - Threshold (a 5.5% foeder aged pale kellerbier)

Pours an opaque pale straw color with a nice bubbly white head, settles to some rocky white terrain that lingers for a while then slowly dissipates to a thin film of white. Some decent lacing from the initial head.

Nose is a cracker like, snappy citrus zest, an almost tangy like smell to it, I definitely pick up a little, but just a very faint oak note hiding in the background.

The taste gets most of the same notes as the nose...the one noticeable difference to me is this comes off more bread like than I had assumed on the nose, it brings a nice depth to this beer. The hops come off a little more in the grassy spicy sort of way for me, and they actually have a nice little bite to them. It still retains some hint of lemony citrus to me. Oak same as nose just the slightest hint on the finish.

Body is light but full, verging medium, almost chewy but still very drinkable. A nice bitter kick to it as well. The finish is clean but the oak shows again adding just the slightest woody feel to it.

Another very good lager Schilling, I will continue to buy them when they show up, which seems to be once every month or two. I'm usually not a fan of lager being aged in oak but this one works quite well, probably because it is so subtle. I'd be curious to try this beer without foeder treatment to see what it would be like.

I'll join all of you tomorrow for one or two more; we shall see what the day holds. But don't worry @snaotheus I will be sure to fit in my big beer Sunday Night Sipper. Oh and I hope you and the mrs have a nice peaceful weekend, I’m pretty jealous of it and being in the cascade mountains.

Received during NBW BIF #15 from @Beersnake1 as a thank you strike.
One that I have wanted to try for some time and finally got to!

Poured very dark brown and capped with an ambitious light brown head that climbed three inches very quickly.
The aroma to my chemically damaged nose was mild but still featured proper porter smells- roasted malts, coffee, a touch of chocolate.
The taste- I grabbed the can again to verify, but vanilla plays top position. Not sweet at all, but no mistaking there is vanilla in here. Coffee shows up later, this drinks true as it warmed. (Coffee showed up in spades but never overwhelmed the vanilla or the base porter)
The feel was good, ideal even. Not sure if it could be better. Ideally viscous.
OA- very happy to have been able to try this finally!

Taking advantage of a quiet house to review another pricy Belgian beer that I ordered a while back.

    Alvinne Cuvee De Mortagne
(Quad aged 6 months in Pomerol wine barrels)

500mL bottle with the cap coded CDM OKT 2021 LOT:861 poured into a teku glass at fridge temp 14% ABV. The beer pours dark brown with ruby highlights and khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Spotty lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring a complex blend of musty oak, dark grape, and sweet fruit wine. The taste is semisweet caramel with immediate musty, wet oak plus notes of raisin, prune and sweet red wine. Minimal bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with less than medium carbonation and a semi dry finish. The 14% ABV is incredibly well hidden. Overall, very good and very different from most quads.

Most likely done with new stuff for today. Cheers all!

750ml bottle with the 5.9% abv hand-written on the label. Didn't see a date.

Hazy pink, small flash of head. Settles to a thin white ring with a ghost flitting across the surface. Smell is bright woody funk and berry jam.

Taste is similar -- but the funk is turned down a bit. Saison-y woody vegetation with a slight spiciness, tastes like berries but not so much like jam.

Mouthfeel is super light and SUPER effervescent. Overall, it's good.

Verdant Brewing Company - Off The Ground

Coffee Stout with San Fermin and Goru Muda beans, from England (6.5%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of roasted malt and coffee, with hints of chocolate as well as fruity dark fruit, berry and citrus accents.

Taste is an excellent balance of roasted malt, hints of chocolate, dark fruit and rich coffee notes that are both roasted and fruity, with berry, tropical fruit and citrus accents of blueberry, mango and orange in addition to the fig and plum from the malts. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some blueberry, mango and plum lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

I'm not really a coffee person, in fact I don't really drink coffee at all anymore, but ironically I can quite enjoy a good coffee stout, which sometimes makes me think that I might be more into coffee if I wasn't spending way too much money on craft beer already and could afford the gourmet shit. I've had a bunch of coffee stouts and they are usually quite roasted and bitter, which I can enjoy, but I'm amazed by the fruity notes to this, with the berries and tropical/citrus accents from the coffee mixing great with the dark fruits from the malts.

There really is quite a subtle complexity to this that I feel inadequate to properly appreciate due to my current level of intoxication, but god damn, jimmy, this is some serious gourmet shit. Incredibly body and depth of flavor for the ABV here.

Good evening all. Very nice day here in the kingdom. Humidity made a run at us mid-afternoon but a nice breeze prevailed and kept the sweat level down. Quick grocery run, lunch at our favorite Indian joint, a new beer picked up, and garden work at the homestead.

    So the new beer:

Schilling Landbier. A European pale lager. Schilling says it is agrarian style, Franconian origin brewed with spelt. It uses a yeast revived from the Weihenstephan cellar. Ok...interesting.

Pours crystal clear golden color with a fairly rocky white head that falls to a ring and rafts. Lots of little suds marks on the glass.

On the nose I get...ummm...strawberry. Yup...
no doubt. Floating high, there are floral notes that are fairly perfume-like, hay, herbal, and earthy. Nice, mildly toasty grainy smell like a rustic bread holds this all up. Mild citrus eventually shows and a very mild spice note.

The taste is... well, it actually does strike me as somehow rustic. Like this is a beer that could be from any period in history. Bread lightly toasted, nutty grains, fruity/floral, citrusy lime, earthy, green hay. A perfect level of hop bitterness and a little peppery tannin thing going on. There is a pleasant underlying sweetness.

The feel is light, smooth, rounded. Carbonation is fairly high, clean, crisp flavor delivery, nothing lingering.

This is an outstanding beer. Full of flavor and very well-crafted. Light, easy drinking. This is a beer you could drink any time - it hits the "I just want a beer" thing yet the flavors and how they are layered - you can think about it and pick it apart or just chill and enjoy drinking the beer. Probably temporary euphoria, but feeling around 4.4 or slightly higher on this one. Easily above the 4.0 mark at any rate. Worthy in every respect.

Next new beer for me (and last for today) is a 2017 Churchill's Finest Hour. A long want for me. Picked this up during a archive sale by Lost Abbey a few months ago. So, it was cellared properly.

Poured at fridge temp (and allowed to warm for a while). Pours motor oil black with light brown head that dissipates fairly quickly. The nose is amazing. Black licorice, bourbon, oak, figs, prunes, dark chocolate, slight coffee, vanilla, molasses, and some toffee.

The taste is fantastic. This is where the big roasted malts appears. A bit of charred wood, but lots of sweet bourbon, toffee, baking chocolate, black licorice, figs, molasses, fudge, vanilla, and some lingering smoke. This is rich and incredibly complex.

Mouthfeel is thick and viscous. The aftertaste is a mix of bitter roasted malts and barrel. The alcohol (13.5%) is not overpowering. It is detectable. Very nice beer overall.

Happy Saturday. I slept until after 5PM. Still working my way through the Handmaids Tale. We watched Velocipastor last night which was 10/10 shitty low budget movie action. We attempted a cat family picture last night, and Chuck is the restless one as usual.

I got a supersonic gose. This was awesome. Great lacing and head retention on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big juicy cherries, lime, fruit skin/pits, citrus zest, lemon, green apple, white wine, wheat, bread, hay, straw, grass, lacto funk, light pepper. Moderate fruity/lactic tart/sour/tangy and lightly spicy finish. Light to medium body. Balanced bready/grainy malt and acid/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light sticky hops. Mild pucker with a fairly crisp and clean finish on lactic acid. Pretty refreshing. Very vibrant on citrus and pretty jammy on cherries. Loved it. 4.1

The ‘highlight’ is that there were many breweries there and every beer I had was a ‘keeper’ – no beers were dumped.

My wife and I got there early and we were fortunate they let us get in when we arrived. There was a very long line for Bierstadt and we wisely decided to get in that long line to get two pours of the Slow Pour Pils which the beertender did pour very slowly (3-5 minutes for a pour). The beer was pretty to look at (see photo below) and while I enjoyed drinking that beer there were several other Pilsners there just as good (and some better).

Tonewood was there with two beers (Foeder Lager and Dry Hopped Pilsner) and I enjoyed both of those beers.

Schilling was there and I drank their Polotmavý which I thought was good.

There were a couple/few Czech Dark Lagers and I enjoyed the one from Deciduous Brewing.

I drank a lot of locally brewed lagers (Human Robot, Attic, Trauger, Mainstay,…) and every one of those beers brought a smile to my face while drinking them.

The beer which was ‘best of show’ for me was a Keller Pils from Bonn Place, that beer was excellent.

The other highlight for me was getting a chance to speak to beer industry folks for extended conversations: Jack Hendler of Jack’s Abby, Jeremy Myers of Trauger and a number of others.

It was indeed a great time!

    Cheers!

American Solera Solarican Wit Style beer, 5.0% ABV; 4.27 overall

Pours an effervescent & hazed gold with a pinky of eggshell colored head. Above average head retention & lacing

S: Green bananas & a little orange peel, plus white peppery yeastyness

T: Follows the nose, plenty of juicy fruit & coriander, some grassy notes as well up front. Classic rubber band taste, dryness, coriander & a little dryness once warm. Finishes dry with grassyness & juicy fruit

MF: Medium body, pretty firm carbonation

A classic take on the style, would swear I was in a sidewalk cafe' somewhere in Belgium with this one, very drinkable

    Evening all!

Finally got the chance to get a little time away from the kids this evening, so my wife and I went to one of, if not our favorite restaurant here in IL - Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL. We had not been here since before COVID, and it honestly was so nice to be back and to see it busy and thriving after all they've been through in the last 2 years.

I had 2 new beers while there - my notes will be very abbreviated since I was trying to spend time with Mrs. Gritty and not my phone.

First up was Harviestoun Brewery Ltd. - Schiehallion a Euro pale lager.

Appearance: Pours clear but lightly cloudy gold color. Velvety white head. Aroma has notes of grains, white bread, floral, lightly fruity hops.

Taste: white bread, grain, floral and fruity hop note. Sweet, some light estery notes. Grassy, moderately bitter finish. Feel is medium bodied, crisp, bright carbonation.

    Solid lager.

    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75 = 3.77 (rDev +0.8%)

Next up was HammerHeart Brewing Company - Snösmältning brewed in collaboration with Old Irving Brewing Co. I was really excited to try this one, but ended up liking it quite a bit less than the general consensus.

Appearance: cloudy, opaque. Thick frothy off white head. Aroma is smoked malts, meat, grain.

Taste: smoked malts, grains, bread, fruity esters, spicy peppery notes, bitter hops on back end. Feel is medium bodied, smooth. Moderate carbonation .

    Overall a solid smoked beer.

I will say, I found out after the fact that they hopped this with sabro - no idea why they used those hops, but I am not a fan of sabro, and I suspect that influenced my opinion of this beer.

    look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75 = 3.82 (rDev -8.2%)

Oh yea, and the food was pretty great. Neither of us were super hungry so we shared a few appetizers - your standard German tapas. Their Scotch egg is delicious ... even better than the old scotch egg they served at Three Floyds.
