Not here to defend Horus, sling away, but I found the year 4 barrel aged member bottles to be fantastic and not overly sweet at all. The non BA stouts were just ok (but I think that about the style in general).
At the recent HOMES beer fest, Filberts got good reviews and that's while tasted against a lot of killer brews.
I'm one of the many that complained about price, but I'm stoked that this year's member beers are mostly non adjunct, or at least not hazelnut (he can certainly park it on that adjunct)
I say post your trade and see what happens.

personally i think you still should seek out a few to try. i have been a member for 3 years now, and obviously everyone has different tastes, but in my opinion i have rarely had a bad beer from them.

    Appreciate the response.

Hey, what ever happened to Three Chiefs? That ship came in and sank within months it seemed like, never to be seen again.

Exactly what I thought of when the "underwhelming Horus" convo began.

There's definitely a trend of breweries pumping out trendy beer (that by most indications is actually somewhere in the good-to-very-good range), capitalizing on hype and asking for sky-high prices (both primary and secondary), and then eventually consumers burning out on them pretty quickly. See also: J Wakefield, Forager, etc.

I've had better experiences with breweries where the fervor surrounding them grew more organically rather than feeling pushed in that direction by the brewery itself at the outset (there are exceptions to every generality though, of course).

Although I do think Three Chiefs is a little different in that they literally aren't around anymore (transitioned to mead, or something?).

I had a 3 Sons / Three Chiefs / Phase Three collab when I was at 3 Sons in Ft. Lauderdale like 2 weeks ago, and it was fantastic.

Forgot about them. I remember when Faha popped up on the trade boards and people were giving away crazy shit for it. Only beer I've had that involved them was Niyok, a collab with Trillium. It was decent.

Is it Inu Island Ales? My buddy lives right by there and I keep throwing stones for him to go check it out and send me something from them.

To be fair, J Wakefield was really one of the progenitors of pastry stout hype. They have roots at Cigar City extremely early in this realm and made a name for Skittles sours and BA pastry-lite stouts there. So too is the story for Angry Chair and even Arkane I believe. Not trying to defend JWB, but they're in part to blame for this trend of pushing towards the extreme sweet, not necessarily one of those who came after and jumped on the bandwagon. That said, at least they make some "regular" beer that's fairly solid.

Fair enough! Maybe my examples aren't the best, then. They just popped into my mind as one of the first/biggest breweries pushing the idea that their beers should be worth a ton on the secondary market that I've been a little let down by (that being said, I haven't tried any Bakes).

Me neither...but I know a guy in Cali that gets to try several annually at the Mostra coffee/beer fest and it pisses me off every year. It has also made my interest in it wane over time considering how often I see it checked in relative to how hard it is to get. Reminds me a little of Pear Leto.

I couldn't agree with this more, especially the words about Bottle Logic. Have always dug their beers because even with the addition of adjuncts the barrel and base still shine through. Too many pastry breweries out there drowning out every shred of barrel character and taste by over adjuncting the shit out of everything. Can't even tell the beer spent any amount of time in a barrel because all you taste is sugar on top of sugar. Even worse those same sugar bombs continue to get high ratings on Untappd all the while being accompanied by comments about how you can only drink 2 - 4 oz. If you can only drink a couple ounces of a beer because of the sweetness, how the hell is that beer a 5 or even a 4 for that matter? People like to talk crap about BL because of how easy it is to get but I would rather drink their beer than a good percentage of the pastry brewers out there, especially that trash that Horus is peddling.

Someone said beer was dead earlier. I pondered for a moment and hoped there was a chance it could survive. Then I saw RBBT 22 posted at least a dozen times on URBS today…. Yep it’s dead.

Forgive my ignorance but what is a URBS? On a side note, while I really like your new avatar I'm going to miss the pic of Herman Munster

Lol I agree except in this context. I’ve found it way more fruitful when trading alcohol especially with the introduction of being able to swap spirits. With that being said, it’s a large part of the mechanism that has “killed” beer trading and values so… pick your poison! Cheers.
