Seems odd that this would be listed as a barleywine in the Beer Advocate database, when the other versions of Samichlaus are listed as Doppelbock. It's brewed as a lager, so Doppelbock makes the most sense.

it was barrel aged, maybe the BA was over powering the base beer.
I prefer Dual citizen over the Saint Paul BA winter warlock i had. I have gone back to dual citizen and had the Barleywine on tap twice in the last two weeks.

Somebody (you) noticed. I wonder if the style is correct too. It might be a super imperial

My first barleywine in a stovepipe!

The name needs a little work but I love the otter!

No date on the can. This was added to the database just under 2 years ago, so we'll say around 2 years old.

It's been a while since I've seen such a big, sticky head on a barleywine that was not Bigfoot. This must have been pretty hoppy when fresh, there is still a fair amount of citrus rind and a bit of aspirin at the finish. Up front this is sugary. I get toffee and sugar coated orange candy slices. This has an old-school no frills throwback vibe that I'm liking a lot.

Delicious. It’s very sweet, but not cloyingly so. My favorite Straightjacket variant.

Sipping on this tonight. Holy crap is this good. I love the spicy rye note! Huge toffee, figs, prunes, and dates, along with a great wine note. Just a lovely and intense barleywine!

Has anyone opened the new 2nd Shift/Perennial/TWCP BA Barleywine collab? I grabbed a 4-pack but haven't popped any yet.

Im back with a barleywine tonight. This is Barreled Souls BBA Bombs Over Barley. a 14.8% bourbon barrel aged brew. Aged for 12 Months and 3 days before bottling. @Resistance88 I refuse to choose a side!!

    onto my review:
Im sampling this beer at cellar temp and poured into my snifter. The beer was bottled on 10/13/2020 and picked up at the brewery in Oct 2021 and has been in my cellar since.
The beer pours a deep dark mahogany color with very minimal dense beige head forming up about .25 cm and fading to nothing fairly soon after the pour. One active spinning circle churns in the center of my glass as carbonation rises to the surface.
Aroma is malt forward with lots of toffee and brown sugar mixing with plums and raisins and a good dose of sweeter bourbon. I dont get any wooden notes nor any fusol booze. Hops are not present either. Seems spot on for what I anticipated the nose to be when I contemplated opening this bottle.
First sip reveals a sticky texture that coats my lips and palate with each sip. Fairly thick body, almost oily feel, and almost still carbonation. The bubbles that are present are very gentle. Feels the part of a big boozy barleywine.
Flavor is sweeter brown sugar at first with toffee and raisin in the middle and some bourbon notes coming through and finally a little boozy warmth. Its almost like cinnamon warmth, not hot and aggressive, more spicy...not sure that makes any sense. The warmth slowly rolls to my belly and makes for an excellent sipping beer quality.
Hops are absent on flavor profile too.
Based on description I thought I would love this beer....spoiler alert... I do!
Another winner from Barreled Souls IMO.

    4.55 in the BA DB

As the Roman numerals indicate, this one is from 2014. Just my opinion - but this bottle is from a better time for craft US barley wine... when an emphasis on malt, hops, fermentation and unnecessarily big bottles was used to sell a barley wine rather than wax, maple or barrel variety. It’s impossible to drink this and not feel like it’s a relic. This beer is certainly showing its age. Some would see this as degradation, while others would see this as enhancement. This one hits you with dark fruits and complementary ashy bitterness. It feels both dense and hollow in a contradictory manner. Barley wine is the ultimate celebratory beer. Happy Father’s Day weekend folks.

That sounds dang good. I would prefer neither, but if forced to pick I would take wax over the unnecessarily large bottle every time.

Finally opened this @zid and I was VERY pleasntly surprised!

Pours beautifully, with a thick creamy head that slowly fades to a rocky moonscape.

Tons of orange marmalade up front, with maybe a little potpourri like spice and faint, sweet booze. The finish adds a dry bitterness that feels a bit out of place. Since I've never had this without them, I can't say how much the bourbon soaked oak spirals added. Tasted blind though, I certainly would not guess that this is a barrel aged beer. Fair to say then I guess that the effect is minimal. Regardless, this is damn good overall. I only bought a single, hopefully I can get a pack next time.

I have been hanging around in the Imperial Stout Appreciation thread, my faves, but Barleywines are a 2nd place, mostly cuz I dont see many. English or American? That was the question, I've had 13 American and 12 English, most have been Barrel Aged, some brewers "ad junk" to them, they have been excused from this. That being said, my vote is for "American", probably because Bigfoot and 3rd Coast are so damn good they didn't need the bourbon or "junk". Kudos to Crazy Mountain, their Lawyers, Guns and Money was my highest rated plain olde Engish Barleywine.
That being said, this was, and or is, my highest rated, Hailstorms BBA Arctic Ale..

L: A dark reddish brown, minimal head, no lacing.
A: Dark fruit, molasses and bourbon.
T: Similar, to the aroma, a hint of coffee and alcohol, but its not overpowering. Sweet finish.
    F: Medium bodied, minimal carbonation.
O: Solid beer from a Chicago area brewer.

    My last bottle I think.
It's ok. it has a odd off flavor to it just like the bottle before it. Drink now might be a good idea.
    Smells good. fig, booze
It has some toffee/caramel, hint of fig maybe. A odd fruit flavor. Maybe a hint of intoxication
oxidization. Rather smooth, ABV is semi well hidden.

I'll be away and beer free tomorrow, so I'll offer up an early happy Juneteenth to all and happy father's day where applicable.

I ordered a father's day gift for myself yesterday, a delivery from Jackie O's that includes 7 different barleywines! That means it's time to drink the last couple from the last delivery.

I love mixed barrel beer and I love this name. Frank Zappa said, "music only exists to decorate pieces of time".

The apple brandy and bourbon barrels work so well together. Sweet, boozy, and fruity. I get brown sugar, molasses, raisins, apples, gentle heat, and a whole lot more. Should have bought more than 2 dammit.
