    Hello all!
This is my first post here, so be kind please
My favorite beers are highly hopped New England style IPAs
But I have noticed many of the beers are canned with hops residue!
The hops settle to the bottom, and are lost if gently poured into a glass.
    .
I like to invert the can and gently swirl to mix up the hops.
I am a VERY avid home brewer, and i understand we generally want to avoid drinking yeast / trub.
But I think this is a special case, and I suspect this is why Heady Topper cans recommend drinking from the can. The more you drink the more you agitate the residue ( and carbonation works on it too)

    Thoughts?

Welcome to posting and the folks here are not usually judgmental.
It's your beer, drink it however way you want. To decant or not has come up in threads many times.
I drink whatever is in can or bottle. Cheers.

Can you explain the bolded? Why are they "lost" if poured into a glass? I would think the pour would mix them into the beer in the glass.

It's a personal thing depending on your enjoyment of the beer, and it likely varies from one NEIPA to another. Maybe the hops that are used in one brand are too bitter to your taste and you'll want to leave some or all of it behind. You just need to experiment.

I try to avoid the trub. Once the pour starts to get lumpy, I'm done.
OTOH, I've mis-timed a few pours and have had to deal with lumpy brown crap in the bottom of the glass - and I'm still alive. So I think it just boils down to personal preference and aesthetics.

Sometimes I just store a can upside down, with the idea that everything will redistribute evenly when I turn it back and crack it.

I haven’t really noticed any effect but also haven’t made an effort to take specific notes or compare. I guess I should do a side-by-side with an upside down and a rightside up.

I’ve always operated under the idea that I want everything that was in that can to end up in the glass for the most part. Sometimes when I rinse the can out, some residuals will come along with it, but not much. I’ll invert the can and often times give the bottom a few thumps and let it settle before opening it and pouring. I’ve never minded the sludge, as a matter of fact; I like it. Cheers.

I would agree with others here that pouring with or without sediment is a matter of personal taste. Certain specific glassware can enter the picture as well as they can enhance, capture or release certain qualities of beer. Unless the sedi is lumpy, I want it all in my drink. It's a roll of the dice with a new brew in a can but in bottles sedi is visible. I roll the can/bottle back n forth on it's side (like a hefe-weiss) and save a bit to swirl for the end of the pour. I once got a 6pk of SNPA and every one of the bottles had a solid 3/16" of fine yeasty sedi at the bottom. It was excellent, different and just as good as always. I've never seen that beer like that since then. Cheers!!

I suppose if you are a reviewer of every beer, then the full contents of the can is what should be poured which gives you the full experience as the brewer intended the beer to be. Mix in all that sludge, review the beer, then pick your teeth. :stuck_out_tongue:

… except when the brewer doesn’t recommend pouring the sediment into your beer glass.
