Just spent an hour moving sand that was dumped on the beach this am, celebrating my hard work with Brickstone/Binny's Dark Secret XV BBA Imperial Stout, and it's a fine one for sure. Thick, viscous oily looking pour, it would give Ten-Fidy a run for its money. Aroma, I've seen the phrase "in your face" mentioned here. Booze is upfront here, roasted malts, some cocoa. Taste buds get some dark fruit, coffee, caramel. Body is thick, creamy, but it does have some heat. Quite tasty![IMG]

I really enjoyed that one - Brickstone Dark Secret(s) are a criminally underrated lineup.

absolutely love this beer. it’s dark, malty and thick, and the unique barrel-aging gives it notes of chocolate, port wine, raisins, caramel and tobacco. it had been a while since i had had a WWS or variant of and so i went into this with medium expectations and was completely and pleasantly surprised at how complex and delicious this is. cheers!

ISO every beer Zebulon has posted on here

Tonights bottle is none other than the King Of California RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUTS :

2019 Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Rasputin

Opening this fucker gives you a blast of bourbon barrel and chocolate making you feel like a crash test dummy that just landed in Willy Wonkas river if it had bouron as well. Some rich dark malt in the backseat and a whole lot of goodtimes cuz your in one piece abd engine is still running.
It poured a light brown with lot of head that disappears into nothing. Holding glass up to light shows edges that look like amber maple syrup.
First, second and third tastes is all bourbon- that good bourbon alcohol heat, chocolate and rich burnt malt. Got this car with a wrecked front end in 3rd gear now. This bottle will not survive the night.

Today I had a 2021 Péché Mortel with a birthday breakfast. Much smoother and less bitter than the 2019. Very good but I think I like the 2019 more. Makes me wonder if the bitterness was due to aging or just a particular vintage…

First, Happy Belated Cake Day! Second, where are you getting Peche Mortel in Ohio? I had it once and it came from a guy in Canada! (Thanks again @Coronaeus ) It was very good and I'd like to find it in Michigan if it's sold in the states.
As to the bitterness - fair question. This is based on observation only (and three years of month stout appreciation nights) but we have observed in the vast majority of cases that the *hops* bitterness mellows quickly, but any malt char bitterness sticks around. So my guess is that the 2019 was just different in a way that suited your specific palate after the relatively small percentage of hops diminished. Maybe you are more a fan of the malt roast bite?

It seems overwhelmingly complicated. I'm in the same boat.

I'm still a fan of Sammy Smith's Imperial Stout. Hard to find anymore around here but it is still my favorite Imperial Stout.
    Like Black Velvet!

    .

I asked someone at the brewery a while back about US distribution for Peché Mortel for a friend who was curious. I didn’t get details, but was told it is available in several states fairly regularly. The barrel aged version is still only available in Québec as far as I know, with Peché Day exceptions. Same goes for the Peché Day 4 pack with the BA version and three annual variants.

I’m fan of both malty char and hoppy bitterness. It seemed more of a hop bitterness but it’s hard to tell the difference between that flavor and a wicked dose of coffee. Both are good

A plug for Advocate trading. I got the bottles from @micada. Trading here is a nice way to get a sample of otherwise unavailable beer. :+1:

Picked up a 4-pack yesterday. Should I put a couple in the cellar or drink all of them fresh?
