Awful lot of lager sold and drunk in Wisconsin.

Mostly bad lager, but it's still lager.

If you visit the Milwaukee Art Museum you can see their great collection of German beer steins brought over by immigrants. A proud display of heritage.

Has German immigration been a thing in the past 50+ years? Are 4th generation Americans identifying as German American at this point? I know WI was home to many German immigrants a century ago or more, but have a hard time believing after multiple generations people are identifying themselves as German Americans.

I do. (though I'm not in Wisconsin proper, I have the correct visa.)

And yes, there are a lot of Wisconsites who hold their heritage dear. Look up Milwaukee Bier Gartens and Bier Halls. There's a big German Fest at the Summerfest grounds every year and neighborhood festivals as well.

Hell, look at the Brewery New Glarus built -- pretty Germanic looking -- and yeah, it's in a Swiss-like village, but it's a common theme.

That means nothing- not everyone at the Pride parade is part of the LGBTQ community, most of the people at St Patties Day parade aren’t Irish, etc.
I’m still not convinced. I understand being proud of a heritage is one thing, but identifying as from somewhere you never lived is another. I doubt many of the 3rd and 4th generation offspring of German immigrants are actively identifying themselves as German Americans, but I guess if there was one group that wanted to keep their bloodlines pure I wouldn’t put it past them.

But those that plan and organize the events often are.

There's a great documentary on the Chicago St. Paddy's (proper spelling, yeah -- I'm Irish too.) Day Parade and its history out there -- showing who originated it and who's still involved with the planning and pulling it off. People very proud of their heritage.

But I'm not here to make a big push at convincing you because I already know what I know. Spent a lot of time with these folks, sharing in their enthusiasm and love of culture -- no matter their generation.

And I just have to say, this sure sounds pretty ignorant and inflammatory in this day and age.

Then again, it seems like the ignorant are seeing a big reawakening lately, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I'm not sure why you would choose this stupid hill to die on but Milwaukee goes hard in the paint on all that German heritage stuff the other poster mentioned. Also ancestral German citizenship is a thing. There's strict requirements but it's totally a thing that likely applies to more people here than anywhere else in the country. The great grandparents of someone now in their 30s isn't the ancient history you're making it out to be.

Valley Spirits in St. Croix Falls had some yesterday. Snagged a couple 4-packs. Only saw their House Lager.

I still hold the high ground and the hill is in no danger of being over run. I could argue all day over this whether discussing how the main waves of German immigration were all in the 1800s most of which predates an actual Germany. Do the offspring of Prussians from 200 years ago identify as Prussian or do they identify as Germans now? Remember the 2 world wars? Those pretty much destroyed most of the German American identity and necessitated assimilation. Of the many people I know who have German ancestry at some point (and some from WI) none of them identify as "German American," they have far to many other races mixed in and have absolutely no ties to Germany short of enjoying an occasional bratwurst. Stating that WI is a good place to launch a lager because the people there with German ancestry must like lagers is as silly as saying that black people in the US must like sourgum beer because it was a traditional drink in Africa. And what about Steve H who is a German Irish American- how is he going to resolve the conflict between being from a lager loving people and an ale loving people?

    Define what a German is???????
    What/who is a real German?
The real truth is out there. And some people might not like it and will not accept it.

It's Stout, not Ale, and the answer is simple and non-conflicting -- I enjoy both equally.

Unlike those people you talk with, I embrace my heritage(s) as well as my diversity -- along with other's.
