Let me first say this is not a “trading/ba/beer is dead” post.
I also full accept everyone is at their own personal spot as far as trading and what they’re after.

I just noticed I’ve gone through some stages in trading and they’ve fizzled out.
    * First a few years ago I was just excited to do any trades.
    * Then did a few local4local mystery boxes.
    * Did one of those beeritforward things. Didn’t enjoy it.
    * Chased the ba top 250 for a while

At this point I’ve essentially ticked or have in possession all the top 250 I’m interested in. The whole thing kind of lost its mystique as well as it can change on a whim.
I also lost a taste for most stouts.
I also started proxying and the “thank you” beer boxes scratch that $4$ or local beer box itch.

Anyone else have a similar experience? I know a lot of guys just say drink local. Sometimes that seems boring but definitely has appeal.

I'm beyond over chasing the latest thing. I've chased much more old money ticks lately and its far more satisfying. I was planning on posting up a pic of some of the old money I've acquired lately (80s and 90s jw lees, BA de molen, xyauyu's etc). Im also spoiled and routinely win lottery draws from voodoo so that probably helps temper my desire to chase new stuff via trading as well.

Yes actually. This is probably the least I've traded in a long while. Probably cause I've ticked everything I wanted to now except a few whales. I think I'm at the point where I'm just gonna drink locals and then do some occasional shares. This hobby was fun while it lasted, but it's gotten a bit too expensive now.

While many of us involved this world have gotten to tick ALL TEH WHALEZ via trading, shares or festivals, the fact that local breweries all over the country, and world, have stepped up their games and cracked the code to pretty much every groundbreaking trend is probably a larger contributor to killing trades than we all realize.

Plus, as it seems, disposable income really skyrocketed for a large segment of hype chasers to the point that they practically set no ceiling in buying secondary, so they often choose the path of least resistance, which is to worry only about one box in transit, as opposed to two.

    I'm "new" to trading
Got put onto it after a very disappointing and expensive tavour purchase.
Now I mostly trade with someone in the Midwest for beers i love and cant get here that they have easy access to so there's no need to pay an extra premium forcthe beers rarity .
$4$ for great BA and Non BA Stouts that are easily accesible and they like WCIPAs and Lagers . Everyones happy.
I have done some trades with harder to get beers that shit takes so much time and effort that it isnt worth my while. Gas is fucking expensive and i value my time .
Maybe the wide availability of beers and a 'looming recession' coupled with hiking prices on gas and grains plays a role as well.
I don't know if you use Facebook ( i dont) but i hear trading pretty popular on there .

I definitely agree. I think after a while we all experience trade fatigue in big part to the law of diminishing marginal utility. The thrill of landing your first whale or scoring some fresh Zombie Dust makes you want to jump right in but if you have the stamina to stay in for several whales or even some good $4$ beers it can become exhausting. Getting some decent local offerings becomes much more appealing.

I agree with all of this. In reality though, trading is almost always more costly when you factor in your own time acquiring the beer to send, gas, shipping and packaging + extras. So much easier and almost always cheaper to just click add to cart.

Exactly. Which is why I mostly just do trades as a favor for a friend (s).

Otherwise, the OP's experience is pretty comparable to mine, back in the day.

Was happy to help out, and besides... you were more than generous with what you sent me in return.

Just a word of advice from my anecdotal experience to newer traders: personally, I haven't felt "burnt out" from trading quite as much as others have seemed to by taking my time. I see plenty of traders get into chasing and exchanging beers and feel the need to obtain each and every new "big" bottle or attend every coveted release in the area... it's not too surprising that these are the same people I see a year or two later having zero interest in it.

The hobbies that are the longest-lasting for me are ones that I approach gradually and naturally instead of obsessively. Maybe others feel differently, but thought I'd share in case anyone else relates.

I have sent some old trading friends beer, but have done no trading since the "trading for other alcohol products" became a no-no.

I have too much beer, too much mead and I want access to regional microdistilleries.

I'd still be trading 1-3 times per month if I could ask somebody in the middle of nowhere New York or Arizona go get me a couple bottles of craft whiskey and I send them beer in return.

Wish we could get a separate forum for other alcohols.

I see your point. I’ve got mixed feelings about it, but most people just went to FB groups.

Similar feelings here. Still don't really get why mead trading was banned. Definitely traded less since BA pulled an about-face on opening up the trade pages.

    I am new to trading
I try to get information from all sources known to me. The articles are the most helpful. Only from verified sources Of course, there are also obstacles, in the form of other people who say that this is bullshit

Trading is so slow on here anyways, by allowing the trade of other alcohol, it would only bring more trading to the site. Can't see that slowing the forum down even more. It's funny though, I see plenty of trade ISO/FT with mead and it doesn't get shut down. Any whiskey being offered gets deleted instantly.

We rely on user reports. So if you're seeing stuff and not reporting it, that's part of the problem.

We also tried allowing trading of other alcohol. It caused more harm than good and most people didn't want it.

I think this just confirms folks are more against whiskey than other non beer alcohol. A bourbon will quickly get reported, but mead is overlooked? Or maybe mead flies under the radar? I've politely informed users that non-beer trading is not allowed, but I'm not gonna seek out a mod and tell on them. The reason because it really doesn't bother me either way.

You don't have to seek out a mod. Simply click the "Report" button/link on the related post, the user won't know who reported them, and the mod team will review.

I don’t think the effort level or fear of being found out as the reporter are what stop people. Most users don’t care if someone trades non beer here. One of the nice things about the BA community is it’s a lot of good people who just want to have a few good drinks and not stop anyone else from doing the same. Why would I ever report someone for trading non beer? It hurts someone else and doesn’t help me at all.
