7% ABV New England style IPA by Other Half

Tasting from a pint can. Body pours a pale yellow with a nice fluffy head. Good lacing throughout the tasting.

Nose is a pleasant hoppy citrus with a dank background. Hop bill is Citra, Centennial, and Simcoe.

Taste follows nose with a nice hoppy hit, some light bitterness and a dank finish with a bit of pine. This one ranges away from many NE IPAs that are mostly (and often deliciously) juice bombs.

Mouthfeel is very good. Nice and soft. Oats? Carbonation was solid.

A very good beer that I recommend to fans of slightly bitter NEs.

From a sensory quality(s) perspective what was 'not to style' with this beer?

    Cheers!

Happy 4th Weekend, NBW friends. I spent a few days in St Louis for work this week, and while Perennial and Side Project (rightfully) get a lot of beer nerd love, Urban Chestnut is every bit their equal, IMHO, especially their lager game (Zwickel anyone?).

This beer isn’t a lager, but my hotel had this in their fridge next to the Diet Pepsi and Dasani.

Naturally I picked up a couple of bottles ….. because it’s a WCDIPA and I have a special affinity for that species in the wild.

    Let’s go!!!

Bottled on 5/10/22, so approaching 60 days old, this WCDIPA pours a beautiful golden orange color with an unfiltered look and a creamy oatmeal colored head that provides ample lacing. I’m

The nose has grapefruit and pine aromas upfront with some toffee notes as well. The grapefruit and pine are forward on the taste, along with an orange marmalade flavor that combines with the toffee flavor at the back of the palate to really elevate this beer. There’s also a bit of alcohol as the beer settles at the very back of the palate, which I didn’t expect.

The mouthfeel is very full and drying. This is true old school WCDIPA, which I really appreciate. More of this, please.

The hop presence for sure, it was very well done and balanced but it is what I noticed most in the flavor of the beer. They also showed in bitterness, but to me it actually paired quite nicely with this beer. I would hesitate to say it was "hoppy" beer but definitely more noticeable than others I've had.

I enjoyed how balanced and drinkable it was and the hop notes actually paired very nicely with the beer.

Have a good Saturday. Did the historic introduction walk of Richmond and when we got to Hollywood cemetery they closed the gates at 6pm after we got a drink at the convenience store near the place. Now we are at legend brewing. We walked the bridge. I am taking an uber to the car.

Got the legend hefeweizen. Great hefe. Nice spotty lacing and head retention. Aromas and flavors of lemon, pear, apple, banana, bubblegum, clove, peppercorn, wheat, bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, yeast earthiness. Medium herbal/grassy bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish. Some yeast tang/tartness. Fairly crisp/clean finish. Med high carb and light med body. Balanced creamy/grainy wheat and sticky hops mouthfeel. Lingering bitter/spicy drying. No astringency. Maybe a bit thin but this is flavorful for 5% and refreshing. Spot on style. Plenty of yeast ester complexity. 4

Back again friends with a beer my brother in law gave me. Been wanting to try this but it only comes in 12 packs and I was hesitant to purchase without giving it a taste first. The can has no info, the opposite of the Tonewood label I shared earlier in post #38, basically just says lager and all the scenarios it's great for on the back of the can, oh and "crisp, snappy, and balanced" that is all...

Cape May - Longliner (5% lager...what kind we shall see) canned mid April

Pours a beautiful absolutely crystal clear gold (damn humidity condenses on the glass instantly, I kept trying to wipe it down for photo), identical to my wedding ring. Semi vigorous pour yields a soapy bubble white head that lingers for quite some time, some random yet substantial splotches of lacing.

The nose is slightly herbal and green grass like with a some cereal and dry husk notes.

The taste shows the same initial notes as the nose but it sort of comes out as just a general noble hoppiness; a nice pale malt presence. As it warms the malt shows itself more in the form of an ever so gentle sweetness; along with some grain husk.

Light body, effervescent but not overdone carbonation, hop feel presents itself nicely on the tongue with a grassy like bitter bite. Clean and dry on the finish.

This beer is incredibly drinkable, it goes down so easy and the moderate hop presence to me makes it al the more refreshing and begs you to come back for another sip. I’m glad I tried this beer and may purchase a 12 pack next time I need to restock the fridge. As far as how I'd best characterize this beer I'd call it somewhere between a czech pils and helles, its soft and semi malty yet it has a nice herbal hoppiness to it.

Definitely would recommend this beer to both average drinkers and beer nerds like you alike.

The kids are sleeping out tonight so I may have one more in me later. If not I'll see you all tomorrow!

9.5% Tripel from Victory Brewing Company

The body pours a rose-yellow that is hazy. Good initial head quickly fades to a ring at the edges. Lacing was minimal.

Nose is much more sour than berry though there is a faint raspberry aroma.

Taste follow nose but adds more subtantial raspberry tones. Sweet but just a bit as tartness and sour dominate and pair well with the berries. The ABV is hidden by the sour. Very nice.

Mouthfeel was okay with light but present carbonation.

I did not expect to enjoy this one as much as I did. Normally I steer clear of raspberry flavor, but they expertly crafted a easy drinking fruited sour.

Legend tripel. Great stuff. Aromas and flavors of big banana, bubblegum, peppercorn, clove, apricot, red apple, grape, honey, cracker, bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, yeast earthiness. Med herbal/grassy bitterness, yeast spiciness, and light yeast tang/tartness on the finish. Med plus carb and med full body. Balanced creamy/grainy malt and sticky hop mouthfeel. Slight sugar syrup. Long lingering resin and spicy yeast drying finish with no cloying/astringency. Mild warmth of 9.7%. Great style example. Plenty of yeast complexity and not overly sweet. 4

Good evening, NBW/S faithful. Waiting to see if the thunderstorms stay north of us. For a mid-80s day, the dewpoint made for an oppressive day. It's supposed to break, but we shall see.

In the glass and not in the data base:

Beer on Earth (collab with Proclamation) House in the Tall Grass, a Farmhouse Ale of the Saison persuasion. Brewed with local malt and hops. Bought today, no date...

Pour us a pale yellow with slight haze, and a huge tower of white foam that lasted several minutes before doing the ring and island bit. So it looks like a saison should...bring in the other senses.

The smell is...well...kind of weak so I'm not getting a huge sense of expectation. The smell isn't quite setting the table. Vaguely bready, a citrusy note, maybe a gentle bit of funk, not much in the spice common to the style. A bit of a harumpf here, but what's it taste like?

This is an interesting thing. The taste opens pretty much ax bland as the aroma, but after a few sips it absolutely blossoms with the characteristic flavors of the style. The beer is grounded with a slightly sweet malt flavor and an ephemeral brett-like funk. Wheat...ummmm...maybe. The rest of the gang then starts to weigh in and the flavor builds a nice lemon level, yeastiness, a black peppery spice note and eventually a tad bit of clove. This all presents itself initially in the aftertaste, but that just sets the stage for the next sip where the late developing flavors play nicely off the renewed maltiness. Subsequent sips meld into a very nicely rounded saison.

Feel is light. drying, maybe a bit undercarbonated for the style. Eventually the spiciness gets pleasantly tingly. Nice bitter level.

Soooo....overall this is a nice beer that ticks the saison boxes....eventually. I think tame is the right word here. It's not as raucous and effusive as a Tank 7 or some other heavyweights in the style, but it gets there by a different path. I wish it had a bit more going on with the smell, so no happy points there. Thinking 3.8-ish once it's in the database. Damned respectable and enjoyable effort from a local shop.

So I at least sampled the namesake album by Kikagaku Moyo...and quickly learned it ain't my thing.

Yea I will be doing gravel and trail riding soon too. My mtb needs some new parts then I'll be out.

Legend blood orange berliner. Awesome berliner. Nose is pure blood orange juice. Taste of blood orange, lemon, lime, green apple, white grape, wheat, bread, hay, straw, grass, light pepper, and lacto funk. Med tart/sourness and fruit tang on the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Medium-plus carb and light med body. Moderate lactic acid, fruit tang, and light grainy wheat mouthfeel. Mild pucker but refreshing. Great balance of blood orange vibrancy and lacto complexity. 4.1

Did you see the statue of Mr. Bojangles on the way down to Hollywood Cemetery? Is the big stone pile Confederate memorial still there? Go to Chiocca's behind The Virginia Museum on Boulevard for Pastrami and Swiss sandwiches. Check out The University of Richmond campus. I love Richmond.

I get what you are saying here. When I homebrew my Kolsch beers I only add hops (Tettnanger) for bittering (beginning of boil) and no other hop additions. Having stated that some other brewers choose to add a bit of hops for flavoring (e.g., a little bit for the last 10 - 15 minutes of boil).

Each brewer (including Tonewood) gets to choose here.

    Cheers!

Proooobably not gonna have time to visit this thread tomorrow between 4th of July parties at my family's house and then at my friends'/their neighbors' place, so I'll just drop this one here now.

Evil Twin Brewing's "I'd Like A Triple, Grandiose, Extra Sweet, Cookies N' Cream, Caramel Macchiato, Cappuccino Please"

I could feel my blood sugar rising exponentially as I typed that.

This is a 12% ABV imperial sweet stout with cacao nibs, coffee, cookies, caramel, and milk sugar. What's more American than type 2 (aka acquired) diabetes, after all? Let's dive in!

Pour is interesting... it's, of course, a ridiculously deep black liquid with absolutely zero light penetration... that much is apparent and would be obvious to anyone with even a passing understanding of what a 12% stout typically is. However, I do want to mention that the head was probably one of the slowest forming collars of suds I have seen in a beer anytime in recent memory. At first, I actually thought it just didn't have any head whatsoever, given that even five seconds after my initial pour it just didn't show up. However, weirdly enough, after ten more seconds or so, I looked back at my glass to find the missing foamy goodness quite present indeed (as you can see above). It even leaves behind some nice lace as it slowly settles to a half-finger, and the legs are nice as well. Quite a delayed reaction but I'm glad my initial feeling that this was essentially flat was proven wrong.

Nose is, well, yeah... it's insanely sweet-smelling with tons of chocolate cookies doused in caramel liqueur. I get a good bit of coconut here, as well, and in all honesty I smell those Girl Scout "Samoas" cookies more than almost anything else here. Vanilla and toffee melding with hints of strong espresso roast coffee come out as well, but really this seems so forward with whatever the "cookie" addition may have been that I find it hard to dig deeper. Which is unfortunate, because I think there probably could be a bit more here, but it seems obscured by a huge wall of coconut-laden cookies.

Perfumey ethanol weirdly comes across more on the tongue than in the nose, as I pick up a hefty bit of the 12% ABV right upfront before any of the sweetness comes out at all... tastes almost floral to me, and there are quickly-arising flavors of slightly-roasty malt and milk chocolate with light roast coffee and lactose-driven sweetness backing them up. The coconut-like element is here, but seems less prominent than it did in the nose, so that helps this feel less "one-note," but I still think it's kinda boring when it comes to Jeppe's sweet stout game; after all, this is the man who brewed Imperial Biscotti Break, my probable all-time-fave in terms of "dessert stouts," and one of the first well-rated and widely-known examples of such.

Feel is dense and creamy, as expected. Carbonation is dialed-back (in line with my initial expectation before the head suddenly manifested, of course) in favor of the usual sweetness-biased approach that is all the rage with stuff like this these days. I don't hate this by any means, but it just feels pretty passé, and the name of the beer itself almost feels like a missed attempt to make fun of a style that is already well and truly done and dusted in so many ways. If this had been released at the apex of the popularity of "pastry stouts" (groan), I could see its relevance in some ways other than its epically-saccharine flavor profile, but as it stands it's like the Slowpoke meme in beer form, making fun of/referencing something that has already been done to death, and as such it just seems pretty dumb? It's just beer, after all, and I get that but I can't shut off the part of my brain that wants to trash this for thinking it's so clever and edgy. Could be totally off-the-mark, though, of course. Give it a shot if you like insanely sweet bullshit!

    Cheers all!

    Samuel Smith Organic Pure Lager

440mL can stamped SB28V1 (2/28/22 according to my secret decoder ring) poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 5% ABV. The beer pours bright, gold in color with light cream colored head. The head recedes to a half inch cap and sticks. The aroma is pale malt and pleasant yeast. The taste is bittersweet pale malt with a hint of stone fruit and a slight mineral note. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very enjoyable lager.

    Cheers all!
