New brewery for …..Bottle received in Bif15 from @Beersnake1

Brewers Notes: The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep

    2021 GABF Gold medal winner.

Dark brown liquid , sudsy two finger brown foam crown , recedes to a taupe ring

Aroma is roasted malts , roast coffee

Taste is roasted malts, some char, hint of pepper, hint of licorice, hint of bakers chocolate

Sudsy , the char and bitterness from the roast malts lingers through to the finish

    Good beer , thanks @Beersnake1

Kings & Daughters in collaboration with Breakside: Horticulture, Baby! A DDH pale ale.

16oz can served in a big snifter. Can is dated 06/10/22.

Pours a hazy pale yellow with a maybe 1 centimeter that settles to a thin dusting with an uneven ring of head. Smell is rich, tropical, and resinous. Oranges, maybe mango.

Taste is mild, focuses on tropical fruit like pineapple with a little bit of orange zest in the background. A bit of biscuity grain character. Mild but insistent bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is light, effervescent. Overall, this is a very nice pale ale.

did not see any of the sights you mentioned, but there are plenty more historic walks to take and sights to see. I took a lot of monument pictures already. Still have the whole cemetary and civil war museum to peruse as well. We will be back, 3 hours flat drive is nothing lol

Pulled this out of the cellar, it was sent to me by @ovaltine for an LIF in the NBW BIF #12- that’s right, September of 2020. Some good things *did* happen that year!
Poured very dark brown with a massive brown head that took a while to settle down.
Smelled coffee and sweet, probably the vanilla but I couldn’t define it as such.
The taste, oh my, this is a sub 7% abv stout and it’s so full of flavor; coffee and cocoa and vanilla, no doubting that now, and eventually the base stout makes its appearance. This is nearly, but not quite, pastry level.
The feel was excellent, viscous to go with its mouth filling flavors, just a joy to sip.
Definitely sad I no longer have one of these, it is really good. Thanks Michael!

Good Evening all! We are in Springfield, IL for a little family vacation, so I am drinking local this evening. Scratch Brewing Co. - Sycamore a lager brewed with sycamore bark.
Scratch is a farmhouse brewery in Ava, IL that sources many of their ingredients locally and even forages for some of them. If you haven't heard about them, they are well worth reading up on - and definitely trying their beer if you ever get the chance. https://www.scratchbeer.com/

This one pours a cloudy burnished copper color. A thin white head forms on the beer, lingers for a moment, then shrinks leaving a ring of foam along the outside of the top of the beer. Aroma is really unique - you get some notes of the toasted malt, Then yea, there is this spicy apple cinnamon note. But it's not like an apple pie - it's more like an apple-cinnamon liquer as there is the spiciness by also a slight alcohol note. There is a strong earthiness to the character.

Taste follows the nose with notes of grain, toasted malts, spicy cinnamon, some nutmeg and allspice with a touch of apple, some earthy wood notes giving way to an earthy slightly bitter finish. They call this a lager, but it is more farmhouse inspired than anything as you'd expect from Scratch. Feel is fuller bodied, sweet, and smooth. Moderate carbonation. Spicy finish.

Overall it's a really unique beer. I love how such a simple addition like toasted sycamore bark can bring so much to this brew. Another fun, unique beer from Scratch.

Next up, I am leaving IL for a moment to try an Irish Stout I've wanted to try for a while, but never previously come across. This is O'Hara's - Irish Stout (Nitro).

Pours a dark brown color, completely opaque. One or two finger tan colored head forms on the beer, lingers for a while, then dissipates until just a thin layer of foam remains. Aroma has notes of roasted malts, a bit of tobacco, cigar ash, cream and some dark fruits. The aroma on this tracks with my notes from their non-nitro version.

Taste follows the nose with notes of roasted malts, tobacco, ash, dark fruit and some piney, earthy hop notes on the back end. The nitro definitely gives it some smoothness, but it also kind of mellows the flavors - especially as compared to what I remember from the non-nitro version. I'm also kind of left shocked at how hoppy the finish is - its rather pronounced and ends up lingering. Feel is very smooth, velvety, and fuller bodied. As expected from a nitro beer. Very mild carbonation.

Overall I am not sure whether I prefer the nitro or the non-nitro version. What I can say is that regardless of which version you drink, this is a really unique version of an Irish dry stout.

I had this one a while back and felt the same way about the hops; I remember it really caught me off guard. I ended up really enjoying it but that first sip was a big shocker. I definitely plan to by more at some point down the line.

Great photos too; lots of traveling pictures so far from the NBW. Enjoy everyone; I’m really enjoying the full weekend build up to 4th of July this year.

Good morning NBWers! Nothing like a silo of malt liquor on a long weekend!

    Colt 45
    [IMG]
    Appearance: Clear yellow-gold, huge head.

Smell: Sweet corn, some stale hay.

Taste: Sweet, slight corn, sweet fruitiness-slight pear note. Medium to light body, sweetness lingers somewhat in the finish.

Overall: What better than some malt liquor over the 4th of July weekend? Finally trying the legendary Colt 45 as one of the local stores had it in 24oz cans. Not too bad, as with most in the style you want to drink it cold. No major flaws, a solid malt liquor that's up there with OE800 and Mickey's as good ones in the style.

Pours an opaque solid black with a slight tan head and lacing.
Aroma has cocoa, hazelnut, sea salt, honey, cinnamon and vanilla hints.
The taste follows the nose with a cocoa, hazelnut, sea salt, honey, cinnamon and vanilla flavor
A medium bodied decently carbonated beer
A very well balanced Imperial Stout

Good morning, Advocates! I wasn't quite up to posting yesterday, but I did have a new beer (both new-to-me and brand new, adding it to the database). I'm also having a new beer right now, so let's start with that:

    Founders Mango Magnifico

Ahhh, yes, the polarizing Founders classic, now part of their Bottle Shop Series. My wife loves mango; I love habanero. I picked up a four-pack knowing the relatively low rating here on BA, knowing that habanero can overwhelm a beer (looking at you, Grapefruit Sculpin), and knowing that I don't love mango.

    And I'm glad I did.

It borders on too sweet, nearly cloying, but that sweetness quickly backs off - almost like a chihauhau barking and yipping, but when you step forward, it backs away, still barking, but more subdued. The habanero calls the sugary bluff, in other words.

And yes, that heat is present, but perfectly balanced. The first sip, I only noticed a slight peppery note and mild heat, but it grows on you after each sip, quickly lasting through the entire sip and building in potency. It's never over the top, though; this beer is definitely more enjoyable for a pepper fan, but it's likely palatable for just about anyone (in terms of heat).

The mango doesn't come through specifically, contributing to the sweet and fruity overall mix. That works for me, but someone else might want more mango.

What can I say? I love this! It super works for me. It's creative, unique, and execution is awesome, and they nail the concept. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

    4.25 / +18.1% (and I'm not ashamed)

Yesterday's new beer was Lost in the Fog, a collaboration between Abomination and Magnify.

This TDH IIIPA clocks in at 11 freaking percent.

I'm shocked the hop sequence doesn't include any Strata or Cashmere, as there's a big wave of banana and coconut around mid-sip/back-third. Then again, I'm not familiar with Ariana, and I haven't had Pacific Jade in isolation.

I don't love that banana/coconut aspect, either, but YMMV. Everything else works very well, and the mouthfeel is spectacular - about as good as any I've ever had in an IPA this potent.

    Very well done - unsurprising.

    4.05 / added to database

    Cheers!

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 6/10/22. Pours a very attractive hazy yellow orange with a solid finger sticky off white head that leaves thin streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.75

Aroma is guava, mandarin, dank buds, pineapple, and apricot really incredible. 4.75

Taste follows guava, mandarin, marijuana, pineapple, and apricot really well balanced and awesome. 4.75

Mouthfeel is above average, soft gentle creamy carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 8.8% big flavor but easy going down. 5

Overall more insane sauce from this brewery. Just another gem from one of the best brewing. Highly recommend. 4.75 Cheers all.

    I rated Mango Magnifico 3.49.

    That is not a typo.

To state that beer did NOT work for me would be an understatement of mythical proportions. That’s why beer is so great - two people that have tried a LOT of beers and roughly align in what they like and don’t like can try the same beer and have EXTREMELY divergent experiences.

The beer nerd lifestyle can definitely be a wild ride.

Took the dogs for a walk in the desert this morning. Now that it's summer and hot we need to keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. No sightings today, fortunately.

My new beer for today is King of Carrot Flowers from Ratio Beerworks in Colorado. It is fermented with carrot juice and is 5.9% ABV.

The beer is a fluorescent orange color with a small, rapidly disappearing head. It looks like it should glow in the dark.
Aroma of sweet fruit, a hint of spice.
Taste of pear, honey, and coriander.
    Light-bodied.
    Interesting beer.

It's true! What's funnier is that I really didn't expect to like it. It just worked for me (until it got too warm; then it was cloying).
