Come One Come All to the 2022 Beer Advocate Kolsch (and Kolsch-style) Tasting Event!!

Just in time for those hot summer days and nights break out your stanges for this tasting of the brew with a light and crisp body and possible hints of fruit and honey.
Originated in Cologne (Koln) Germany and now only those breweries within 30 miles of the city can be called a Kolsch based on EU rulings. Many American craft breweries have their own examples of the style now.

Not sure if you can find a beer in this style?
Check out the list of Kolsch on BA https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/85/

Goose Island Beer Summertime is the most frequently reviewed example here.

So bring out your local examples, or showcase the imports from Germany. I know @Snowcrash000 is planning a brewery hop of German breweries for the event.:astonished:

Ive dug up 10 breweries with Kolsch-style beers available right now in Connecticut. Show off your local examples to all of us here on Beer Advocate.

Use this thread to post info about Koslch as a style, or the pictures of your hauls in preparation for the event, or to ask questions about the style.

Im no expert on the style and several have chimed in on the planning thread with great info about Kolsch and Kolsch-style beers.

I will start a new thread early Friday (July 15th) AM to start the tastings. Tell us about your examples and take some pictures of those nice golden colored brews!

Thanks for the tips to host this one @FBarber !!

One more and you can justify getting yourself an 11-glass kranz!

I never would have thought to check the NA section for a Kölsch, and I think I recall seeing something from Früh on those shelves, so maybe I'll get lucky when I look again. Thanks for that mention.

Sounds like a great tasting idea for this time of year. I enjoy the Kölsch style and have had Reissdorf Kölsch on draft many times. I just had some Goose Island Wild Herd which I believe is GI Summertime renamed for Buffalo Wild Wings. My supermarket has Gaffel Kölsch in the typical German 4 1/2 liter pack. The best by date on the bottom of the can is 11/22. Should I buy one of those 4 packs, or is it too old to use in the tasting. I'll also have to check with my beverage center, sometimes they carry Vonn Trapp Kölsch which I've had before and enjoyed, but I think it's a little too hoppy to be considered a real Kölsch. Btw Are Kölsch beers lagers or ales?

Puts the Kölsch that I was going to drink now back in the fridge for the weekend, brings out a Helles instead

They are cool fermented ales, just the shortest simplest answer.

I gotta go shopping for one or two more, I only have one local one in the fridge and no more. I hope I have some luck this week.

technically an ale but the brewing process for a Kölsch shares some characteristics to lagers in that they’re conditioned at colder temperatures.

I consider it a hybrid since it is fermented with ale yeast but typically the brewery will lager the beer after primary fermentation is completed.

    Cheers!

P.S. I personally would not purchase that Gaffel since it is > 7 months old but perhaps you are more forgiving here.

For BAs in SEPA, here's a smattering of area brewers with some sort of kölsch available, either draft or packaged-

    Lancaster BC
    Victory (Parkesburg)
    East Branch BC
Suburban BC (2 different on tap)
    Pour Man's BC
Tattered Flag Barrel House (they also have a barleywine, @DIM)
    Sly Fox (Pottsville)
    Locust Lane
    Fetish
    Mad Chef
    Black Forest
    Raney Cellars
    Chatty Monks

I have a few of these and will try to get a few more, as time and money allow.

(Anyone else have trouble typing special characters in these forums? Is it a browser issue? I'm currently using Pale Moon but have other options.)
