Digging thru the "cellar" side of my beer fridge and came across my forgotten sixer of the Third Coast 2020 edition. Forgot how balanced this brew is for an American Barleywine. Love the dark fruit malt base theme without hops overwhelming the finish. Definitely will look for this in the fall assuming we'll still get distro in the Carolinas!
    Cheers!

Kane's Stacking Casks Blend 8 was created from an Oatwine that was aged in Willett Bourbon barrels for 35 months that was blended with a Rye Barleywine aged in a Woodford Reserve Straight Malt Whiskey barrel for 39 months. This blend was then finished in a single 500L Louis Royer XO Cognac puncheon for an additional three months.

Double barreled for over 3 years and a 500ml bottle is $18. You listening Anchorage? The only other beer I've tried from Kane was also a double barrel barleywine and it was magnificent.

Muddy brown with a short lived head. Not a looker but who cares?

Oh damn this is freaking great. The cognac addition is definitely prominent. Butterscotch pudding, vanilla, toffee, molasses, and more all topped with boozy figs, apples, dates, and pears. There is also smokey, oaky leather and tobacco at the edges and the finish, but mostly this is a sweet, boozy fruit showcase.

I love what the extended time in barrels does. The character added is just so rich and deep, layer upon layer of intrigue, much more than just a shot of booze. I get more cognac than whiskey which is a nice change of pace, but both are definitely there. This is right in my wheelhouse, hope I get try more barleywine from these folks. I'd pay a lot for a few unsupervised hours in their barrel room.

FW Daisy's Favorite courtesy of a trade with Tomas @Resistance88 - thanks again brotha! This one is a winner if your palate is acclimated to gin. The base beer is the ever-solid Helldorado and rested 14 months in fresh oak Vermont gin barrels. My palate is getting a touch of vanilla and caramel that is rounded by a fairly strong presence of the barrel aging which rounds out the sweetness perfectly. This one is not for everyone as gin is pretty flavorful and different but for my palate it works. Fun beer to try - 4.24 overall.
    Cheers!

You'd pay about $250 for that from Anchorage

In my limited experience, if a barleywine could be considered "easy-drinking", this is the one. Here's to hoping I can continue to get this for years to come.

Made a quick stop at a grocery on they way home, a place I dont normally visit. But I always look at beer hoping to find something new. They had a cart filled with one of's, lo and behold a bottle of SN's Bigfoot for $.99 same as a Bud light. I had a hunch the Bigfoot would be a better buy......enjoy what's in yer glass.......[IMG]

Currently reading Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, so this was a suitable accompaniment.
The beer is just short of outstanding - review here (4.41).

Lost Abbey Bible Stories. A blend of non-barrel aged imperial stout with a bourbon barrel aged barley wine ale.

I can't think of the last time I had a fresh corked n caged barleywine. Anyone besides Lost Abbey still using them? $13 isn't bad for a 750ml bottle.

I should have opened this last night when I was in the mood for a stout since the stout addition is so prominent. There is a lot of espresso and cocoa roast dominating up front. As it warms and towards the finish, sweet raisins, dates, and brown sugar emerge. The barrel presence is pretty light, hints of booze and vanilla. This is a nice change of pace, looking forward to the other half of the bottle tomorrow. Interesting take on a black barleywine.

This is another easy-drinker, relatively speaking. 10% abv, nice sweet malt base, bit of a cherry taste. Certainly worth the stop while I was in the area.
