I really wish the contents had been at the same level.

So, onto the next, the other end of the label effort spectrum.

Fulton - Persistence, whiskey barrel aged barleywine. Allergies are still killing my sense of smell so my daughter took a whiff and described that part for me. She said it smelled great and when I pressed for details: “Nail polish”.

She was definitely right. But it’s more just whiskey as it warms.

Reubens Brewing / Hair Of The Dog
    10th Anniversary Collaboration Barleywine

    Story: "
Barnacles English-style Barleywine is the sixth release in the Reuben’s Brews 10th Anniversary Collaboration Series, brewed with our friend and brewing legend Alan Sprints of Hair of the Dog Brewery. We have a lot to thank Alan for but one of the most memorable occasions was in October 2012. Our brewery had only been open for business for two months and we were planning our very first bourbon-barrel imperial stout (to be released in 2013 as the first BBIS!) We didn’t know where we could get a bourbon barrel, but Alan came to our rescue, giving us two barrels from Hair of the Dog’s stash that Adam picked up in his truck.

It is a great honor to brew with Alan, particularly this style of beer that is special for each of us. If you haven’t heard, Alan is retiring this year and winding down the Hair of the Dog Brewery. We thank Alan for all of his leadership and inspiration in the craft beer world, both here in the Pacific Northwest and truly around the world"

Cheers y'all. Now back to the Imperial Stouts tomorrow (if i can find any)

Man, I haven't seen a barleywine since January, and that was Bigfoot and only Bigfoot. I've no idea what happened to this style but in my personal experience in both upstate NY and Colorado, it basically doesn't exist anymore.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe @beergoot or @SFACRKnight have some suggestions?

It takes some looking around and some good luck to come across them. If you're lucky you can find some jw Lee's floating around sometimes. But yeah, they're getting tough to find. When I see people taking pics of straightjacket I get a bit envious.

I see a fair number of barleywines on the shelves throughout Colorado Springs -- this list from JustBeer lists many I see often enough, especially the Colorado ones from Great Divide, Bristol, Denver, and Dry Dock. I've always thought of the style as a sort of cold weather seasonal release, so perhaps that's why one doesn't see them all the time, plus, the competition for shelf space for all the hazy / pastry / dessert / fruit smoothie beer releases may shove them out of the picture. Brewery tap rooms and brew pubs may be a better place to find examples of the style.

Just an ammendment to my last post, bligh's from dry dock seems to have become a shelfie and is usually available in bottle shops around the metro area.

I'm Beyond stoked for this. Not only is it a return of the BW, but it's a 2-yr version. Couple that with a 'reserve style' addition (i.e. single barrel source use) and the use of (what I expect is) very exciting barrels should really make this BW sing. I'm particularly interested in these given the great whiskies OF has put out in the last few years. The release from Autumn 2020 was essentially a whiskey of the year winner. Highly lauded, highly sought-after (but somehow still undervalued). Based on timing, that should be one of the sets of barrels used for this beer. I've set my marks on obtaining several of these, and that's really my beer goal for 2022 at this point.

Also, for those not aware, OF is a wheater much like PVW and the original King Henry. So, I'm excited to see what a softer, delightful whiskey will do after 2 years. I expect it to really blow the 2015-2017 BCBBW out of the park.

Think my hopes are too high?????

2022 Jackie O's Iron Furnace. The label reads "In the late 1800’s, iron furnaces around the Southeast Ohio area burned red hot, smelting ore into iron. The Hope Furnace outside of Athens County operated from 1854-1874, producing 15 tons of iron a day. The structure still stands today and was the inspiration for the biggest, richest, and burliest barleywine style ale we have ever produced. It was brewed with a ludicrous amount of local maple syrup and aged for 18 months in some of our favorite bourbon barrels."

I'm craving sweet tonight and Jackie O's does sweet, boozy barleywine as well as anyone. The caramel, raisin, and chocolate all take a back seat to the strong maple sweetness. Maple isn't typically my favorite additive but in this case it's playing really well with the barrel notes that bring plenty of rich whiskey as well leather and woody vanilla. The carbonation is light but the body is satisfyingly sticky. This has depth and breadth, there is a lot going on here. My sweet tooth is satisfied.

I'm so confused by that beer. Barleywine Eisbock? Those are two different styles of beer.
Eis Barleywine? My head just exploded.

I absolutely love English style Barleywine.
The thing that pisses me off is all of the bourbon barrel aging.
I don't mind a Barleywine aged on oak staves, but the whiskey taste just kills & overpowers any subtle complexities that a Barleywine offers.
All you taste is wood, booze, & alcohol. I get so excited when I actually find a Barleywine, then read it was aged on 4 Queens barrels or something. Urks me every time.
    Same goes for Imperial Stout.
Just give it to me b4 the damn barrels.
If I want a whiskey, I'll order that.
