A hot and humid Wednesday here with a good chance of severe thunderstorms rolling in along with more heavy rains. I can't speak for all in town, but please...no more flooding.

[IMG] Tonight’s Blind Battle Beer Tasting Lineup:

    1) New Glarus Kid Kölsch(5.5%): A Kölsch-style beer from Wisconsin with fruity yeast flavors of lemon citrus and sweet apple. Yeasty, fruity, complex.
    versus
    2) Utepils Skölsch! (4.9%): A Kölsch-style beer from Minnesota with flavors of pale cereal and cracker malts. Bready and and earthy finish.
    (mismatched these two blind)

    3) Toppling Goliath King Sue (7.8% canned 4/12/22): A World-Class NEIPA from Iowa that is brewed with Citra and has flavors of orange citrus & flower, pineapple, and tropical mango.
    versus
    4) Toppling Goliath DDH King Sue (7.8% canned 7/1/22): The same NEIPA but double dry-hopped with similar flavors of orange citrus, flower, cantaloupe, and mango.
    (correctly matched blind)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Winners:

    1) New Glarus Kid Kölsch:
Utepils has been my favorite for a while. Very earthy and bready. This one from New Glarus is uniquely fantastic as well. Very complex and fruity yeast flavors. Definitely worth a try and I'll have to find it again.

    3) Toppling Goliath King Sue
: These are both so palate wrecking (in a good way) it was somewhat difficult to detect the difference. The DDH definitely carries that hop burn on the palate, but the original is so good already, I don't think the DDH adds that much extra flavor. Both are & deserve World-Class status. Which King Sue do you prefer?

...going big with my opening beer, a local beauty that I found hiding in the back of the 'Fortress of Solitude' beer fridge this afternoon...

Red Leg Brewing Co. -- Mister Willow Harvest Ale - Barrel Aged
    Barrel aged brown ale
    ABV: ≈ 8.0%; pouring temperature: 55 °F; bottling data: December 10th, 2020

    4.3/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Medium-dark brown body, clear; scant, slow-rising carbonation; thin yet persistent head. Huge aroma of grain, squash, brown sugar, fall spices. Fantastic flavors of toasted grains and roasted nuts; cardamon, cinnamon, and ginger; very light overall sweetness; cocoa powder; fine whiskey undercurrent. Heavy body; velvety smooth; nice overall warmth; some boozy heat and dryness.

What an amazing beer! I assumed, since the bottle was corked and caged, that this would be some sort of saison / farmhouse ale. Instead, it's a barrel aged version of their harvest ale. The base beer was brewed with four whole pumpkins and 300 pounds of squash. This iteration is from late 2020, brewed on September 24th, 2020. Per the brewery's Facebook pages, and they filled four unnamed whiskey barrels with the base beer October 15th for the BA version, bottled it on December 10th, 2020 and released on December 19th, 2020. This is a wonderful brown ale, rich and complex. I like the relatively short barrel aging. It gives the base beer plenty of room to speak for itself while adding just the right subtlety of barrel aging flavor to keep things balanced. If I only knew earlier about this beer, I would surely have grabbed several more bottles.

Helloooo Advocates! Thanks @Peach63 for firing up todays thread. Another cooker here today 86F and quite humid with hot wind. About midnight or so last nite a big storm steamrolled across central MN and with it came much needed rain. A few miles South got the worst of the wind. It didn't trickle in but rather arrived like a wall. About lunchtime I picked up a few armloads of debris from the property and went to the beer store armed with a 15% off coupon. Cashier screwed up and gave me $15 off. That's like 37.5% off, dude... Did my best poker face. Wooo Hooo! Gotta celebrate with a Hamm's. I've 6 more coupons! Cheers!
