Couldn't care less how long it is aged as long as it tastes good.

Definitely curious where the difference lies…or did they just take two stabs at OF 20?

could be barrels that they felt were good but didn’t make the cut or fit the flavor profile of the blend.

Amen to this, which is also one of the biggest misconceptions with whisky. Obviously if it’s older it HAS to be better, right? :grimacing::crazy_face:

Uh...that's a wildly different beast, considering the difference between 1 year and 15 year aged whiskey is DRASTIC, and any further out is often less favorable.

The differences between beers aged 3 months and 24 months are just as drastic, and while sometimes further out is similarly unfavorable, that tends to primarily be in regards to clean beer, not mixed ferm or spontaneous beer.

As for SP, the aging and blending process really did them a lot of favors in smoothing out the acidity while adding complexity. I mean, a simple side by side paints a pretty stark picture, which I was fortunate to do on-site before these most recent vintages. I would love to see for myself how they perform in such a lineup, but I'd wager 19 and 20 simply don't measure up.

didn’t do them side by side but cracked a Tete v18 early last October and just shy of two months later had a v19 on Thanksgiving and thought the v19 was every bit as good if not better.

I agree that a longer time in oak does not equal a better beer. But Tete came to the notoriety it achieved for having a huge oak profile, probably the heaviest use of oak in American wilds ever. So for example if a winery that produces a very oaky Chardonnay cuts the oak aging by almost half, it’s not going to taste the same. You can’t shortcut oak aging and get the same flavors. It doesn’t work that way. Can it still be a great Chardonnay? Of course, but it’s not going to be the same thing that people expect. The fact that they’re using foeders for Tete now, and for the first time incorporating the Saison du Ble recipe, shows that they’ve decided to take Tete in a different direction than people have been used to. I’m not saying it objectively makes it worse, it’s just not the same product they established it to be for many years.

What was the age of the threads in b1, v2015, and v2016?

Side by sides are great, especially for vintages of beers, but blind tasting them is even better. Takes away a lot what you think you know and or prefer about a particular beer/vintage.

Fermier Day seems like a good opportunity to test your palate on old/new, longer aging, etc. Bottle versus draft would likely impact the experience.

Share I had a week or so ago had more than half the bottles poured blind.

I don’t know. It’s not on their Untappd descriptions. Up until V18 each bottle had a tag that listed the thread recipe, type of barrel used and age statement.

Did the two bottle packages of Anabasis + Pinot Noir SdF stop? I don’t see it listed on the site under the cellar or brewery tabs, but thought they were still selling them to-go.

I think they only have it for on-site consumption now. I was there yesterday at the brewery and the to-go list now just has the SdF Pinot Noir puncheons but not as part of a package.

Fermier Day sounds awesome, I’m in! Looking forward to some Oude to go.

Tete 15 didn’t have a tag. I remember because people were actually mad.

feel like Cory said v19 was similar to b1 in that it contained younger threads.

v19 was as oak-forward of a beer (or a tete) as you’re going to get. also, *Oude du Ble not SdB and Tete b1 had Oude du Ble in it too so a harken back to the OG

v15 was barreled November, 2015, and May, 2014, respectively (for 2 different saison recipes - Tete recipe and Oude Fermier) and released July, 2017. it also was the shortest bottle conditioning (that’s known) with a meager 3 months. that’s something to keep in mind with the above quoted info as i specifically recall v16 conditioned for 8 months before release.

Yeah, good point around the bottle conditioning, thought about that piece too after posting.

Dug up the old blog post on archive.org if anyone is curious about what the blend was for v15

so it was really only with the third release of tete (v16) that it became a blend of solely Oude Fermier. they continued that through v18 & v19 and worded the descriptions to those beers like it had always been their practice (which definitely confused me at the time. it whatever). so, again, this is a nice change of pace from the last few Tetes.
