Pours in typical thick black oil Hoppin Frog style into glass with a large head(aggressive pour as always) and settles with a half cm ring of tan bubblies . Smells like dark roasted coffee and dark cocoa with sweet dark malts. No hint of barrel so far. Taste is similar with really very little barrel heat. Very smooth and the barrel precense is very muted. Dark and semisweet chocolate, roasted malt, house roast style coffee and a some vanilla like sweetness that i am not a fan of. Nice full nouthfeel as with all Hoppin Frog Stouts

Easy to drink and good on this hit day. It finishes a bit too sweet for my liking though.

    Adding to above

As she warms up a bit to room temp the barrel comes out nicely

Didn't love this. Every time I open a vanilla stout I'm hoping and praying for a blast of vanilla that so seldom comes.[IMG]

You can add a drop of vanilla extract or shave a half bean into one

I also hoped for more vanilla than I got in this beer.
I thought it was a good imperial stout, but the label and pitch of vanilla left me wanting more.

Back tonight with one that’s a little different. A Belgian that’s a nice take on the style.

Great stout! It brings me back to 2013 when I was lining up for the W00tstout releases in Escondido and later in Pasadena. Man, how things have changed. This is from 2021.

New Image Underworld Barista affogato stout. Coffee, vanilla. Ammeretto. Thick like motor oil but sweeter than I like. If it didn't have the amaretto it would be great. Just ok as a result of the sweetness. Pairing well with seinfeld.

Since I had BC Vanilla Rye on tap the night before Thanksgiving 2014, I have yet to try a vanilla stout worthy of the name.

Zebulon Brewing's Me and the Devil 4 (For John Fian); an imperial stout with Ghirardelli cocoa powder and coconut. Taste is a large roasted malt base, similar to the traditional English Imperial Stouts Zebulon has released; with the cocoa and coconut adjuncts providing a nice compliment, and not overwhelming flavor to the base. Finishes well balanced sweetness wise but with a touch of alcohol heat with the first few sips. I have not seen any more bottles available but if i were to get another one the struggle would be how long to age without compromising the adjunct effect.
    Cheers!
    Tom

Nøgne Ø used to be one of my favorite breweries from the countries outside of the usual conversation (USA, Germany, etc.)… but their beers stopped showing up in the Shelton days. Now they are with Lime and I still don’t expect them to turn up… but I found these two while away from home and decided to treat myself. Started with the porter and then moved up to the thread-relevant imperial stout. So nice to have a scorched, big but very drinkable, English-yeast stout like this. Concluded the night with a stout from a different producer that wasn’t strong enough to qualify for the thread.
