I agree with you on all that. I am just confused why a brewery would do that. Also, There are many hops that would give a more fruity profile like galaxy. While, I do like centennial it’s nothing like galaxy.

A couple years ago they switched out the galaxy dry hop for centennial and I could still taste the mosaic and citra underneath. Then it would flip flop back to the original recipe. Now it's a grapefruit bomb.

Even amarillo would make more sense and it's a cheap hop too. Tangerine is closer to passionfruit than grapefruit is.

It only makes sense in the context of greed.

"So if a brewery won awards for a beer that it says on its website includes only citra, mosaic and galaxy and the beer now tastes like a grapefruit centennial bomb, is that fraud?"

If the above really happened then "fraud" is an appropriate term.

If the brewery wants to brew a beer (an IPA in this case I presume) that feature other hops (e.g., Centennial) then so be it but they should label it with a different brand name.

It would be interesting if other customers of this unnamed brewery have noticed the same thing?

As regards which brewery is allegedly doing this "fraud", at some point:

Yeah, I'm all for calling out businesses that mislead consumers so that others can be more conscientious about where they're spending their money, but without any identifying info this thread is completely pointless and, frankly, weird.

Im pretty sure I’ve sussed out the beer you are talking about. I last had it in ‘16 and quite liked it then. I think I remember noting when we had it available out here very briefly (or maybe that was the pils), and saying to myself I’d have to get a can or two.

Anyway, it is always disappointing when a brewery makes changes to a well regarded flagship beer, all honesty in labeling aside.

Ok, some serious thoughts to consider before the pitchforks come out and this brewery is "named" a "fraud" ...

I do not mean to impugn your palate, but is it possible that your tastes have shifted over the years and that is why the beer tastes different - i.e. a "grapefruit bomb" ... unless of course you have actual knowledge they are changing out hops in the brewing and not just going off your palate and tasting of the beer.

The other side of this is that hop crops often have variations in how they taste to the consumer ... look no further than the rise and fall of galaxy hops in the last couple of years.

If having incorrect information on a brewery's website actually constituted fraud, then we'd need a Congressional hearing on the rampant misinformation and fraud in the craft beer community. Brewery websites are notorious for having old, missing or lacking information. But I think its far more likely that its laziness rather than fraud.

We need a beer name. If it makes you feel safer to tell us which beer you feel has changed maybe drop the term “fraud” from the post.

    Cough, cough…long haul Covid…cough.

hell, maybe they use a less reputable hop supplier who baits and switches them by giving them centennial and claiming it is galaxy. Drug dealers have cut their product with cheaper fillers for years and the fishing industry often labels less expensive fish as more expensive fish.

the only explanation is not greed.

these hops are in extremely high demand. some ppl don't get enough (or any at all) sometimes.

so instead of stopping production of the beer, they may sub hops.

as for whether it's fraud? dunno. for decades ive been told something is a kölsch or a munich helles and charged 14$ a six (or four) pack for it when it was clearly not those things.

Making subtle changes to flagship beers happens all the time. Every brewery of any significant size has done this and will continue to do this. ALL hops are expensive these days and some are much harder to get than others. The use of the word "fraud" in this thread and the implication it's some sort of nefarious way of duping the customer is almost My Pillow Guy level of looniness. But to each their own. Cheers.

Not for nothing but the crops of Galaxy have gotten worse and worse every year.

They could have subbed Centennial due to a bad supply.

This is silly. You could have easily worded the post differently to safely call out the brewery. Without giving us the name the thread will go nowhere. If it's widely distributed others here would be able to offer their opinion.

Exactly. This could have easily been framed as "I'm wondering if this brewery's advertising might be at odds with the hops in the beer -- anyone else care to weigh in on Brewery X Beer Y"? That would have (1) allowed this to be at least a semi-productive thread in which commenters were able to contribute thoughts, justifying a thread about it and (2) helped readers and OP obtain a better picture about whether his hunch was right... And OP wouldn't have to be worried about being sued for fraud (lol... which is an entirely separate misunderstanding he has, but beside the point).

Instead, it seems like he's (inexplicably) ultra-confident in his opinion and more interested in hearing himself speak (or type) instead of figuring out what's actually occurring here.

Are there many nationally disturbed ipas that use galaxy? From my understanding there isn’t that big of supply for galaxy like most NZ hops. When stone first came out with Enjoy By it had Nelson in the drop hops but they realized they would not be able to get enough Nelson annually to make that beer as much as they wanted to. Thus, they changed the recipe.

as others have mentioned it could be a variation of the hop lot, the brewery could be subbing in other hops with galaxy is low.
