Yes, pretty much this. Definitely berry and definitely barrel, but I can’t really discern that it was a former barleywine barrel.

also, I had said these were a heavy roast….I wonder how they would be if they were more in the medium-light range? I know the bag states that they tried several roasts to get what they thought was the best. I wish I knew more about roasting…but I do know that the longer you roast, the more you lose certain flavors/notes.

The beans are barrel-aged before roasting them. Being green does allow them to soak up some of the residual spirits and moisture in the barrel; any alcohol burns off while roasting, but not all of the flavors. You also tend to lose a bit of the flavor when brewing the coffee hot. The ageing is still noticeable, but it's worth making a cold brew of the same beans to taste the difference.

This is interesting coffee talk! I will say that cold brew tends to allow the spirit to be a more robust flavor than hot coffee with barrel aged beans is what I have noticed.

In that scenario it'd seem like much of the barrel flavor would be lost in the roasting process. Although light or medium roast might retain more flavor in this case?

My feeling is don't go in expecting true barrel character or normal coffee character. It's a third thing and worth trying.

I'm not with everyone here about cold brew getting more character in any way, I've never found that to be a method to maximize nuance or complexity.

    Barrel aged coffee sucks.

No joke, more often than not, I get a plasticky aroma from BA coffee that reminds me of old McFarlane Spawn action figures.

That said, I do tend to prefer cold brew for more character in every aspect. I cold brewed some Hawaiian coffee (O'o Farm) that I'd been having for some time that became insanely chocolatey in a way unlike its counterpart Chemex'd batches.

Agreed! I used to get online and buy a few of the Dark Matter barrel aged beans on Black Friday each year till I realized it wasn't really good!!

I have generally not enjoyed Dark Matter barrel aged beans but Hansa in Libertyville does them so well. They had a scotch one last year and an Old Forester this year that were both very well done.

Yeah, it's really not my thing. I hadn't bought any in a long time, then got some beans last fall that were aged in CW Black Gold barrels. I was reminded quickly why I don't typically spend my money on BA coffee. And really for me, coffee is mostly a caffeine transaction. I can only go down so many rabbit holes in life.

LOL. This is amazing and so oddly specific.

I had a decent comic book collection from when I was a kid that I ended up selling in grad school for some quick cash. It included a bunch of the first Spawn comics. I still have a CD from the band Iced Earth where they did a whole Spawn themed album. Don't think I ever had any of the action figures though...

Much needed rain/storms out this way and after drinking lager (Notch) all day i I figured I’d bust into my non-existent cellar with this gem. Filled 11-5-20. Broke up my two can vert, ‘20-‘21. Please no banana shaming. Shopping is next weekend.

    Cheers!

Halfway into my first lager of the day here after a long 2 days of returning to work post family COVID train wreck. SJ is one of the best deals in BA beer from every aspect. Also, thanks for reminding me to stick something barrel aged in my fridge for late night poor decision making.

It really is. May ‘22 since my last ‘21, November ‘21 since my last ‘20. Perfect changeup for the evening.

This was my last ‘20 and I have one ‘21 left I guess for cooler temps.

    Hope everyone is well.

Coconut Deth seems to have (briefly) hit distribution in Indiana. I got the last 4 pack at my bottle shop for $10 more than in was sold for at the brewpub.

$40 at Taproom and Brewpub and $45.99 at all Binny’s so $50 at a bottle shop in IN is lame, but I get it.
