@TongoRad -- what were the dates on your Freising?

I saw it on the shelf the other day, but I didn't pick it up to look. The brand hit big here a few years ago, then seemed to wither on the vine. Too bad, too, very nice beers.

It's about a year old but thankfully not tasting like it.

My local Bottle King just got a big shipment of all styles, but that's probably because the Festbier just arrived. So, yeah, this one was sitting at the distributor, but it really seems to hold up.

Just curious-to the German BA’s, does this thread title read “The world needs more dark Beers” to you? I know most of us are aware that the word itself means dark but according to this thread, it clearly means more than that when it comes to beer. I always thought it was its own beer style-the quick way I used to describe it to novices was that it was like a German version of a brown ale but fermented with lager yeast. A few years ago when I was at a German brewery I frequent in town, I was talking shop with one of the owners who is from the motherland and I asked him if they were planning on brewing a dunkel anytime soon. He responded that there was currently already one on tap. He sensed my confusion as I was currently at the bar, drinking their beer, looking at the menu. “The schwarzbier” he pointed out. He explained that in Germany, Dunkel is just a generic term for any kind of dark beer and not really a style unto its own.

I'd have asked if he was going to brew a Munich Dunkel after the Schwarzbier -- with emphasis on the capitalization of Dunkel.

Schwarzbier is, indeed, dunkel. And Munich Dunkel is also dunkel.

Michael, you are so fortunate to be able to still purchase these beers. Plus, drinking them from that excellent glass has just gotta increase the enjoyment factor!

    Cheers to you! :beers:

Nah.Schwarzbier is recognized as its own style. Both styles have similar strength but Schwarzbier is a lot more roasty with those typical coffee, chocolate, licorice notes.

Schwarzbier is more of an East German style though, which doesn't have a big footing in Bavaria.

I just had the Schwarzbier from Hummel Bräu, a usually great Franconian Brewery, but their Schwarzbier was terrible.

I think you might’ve misinterpreted my post. The claim was that dunkel is a catch all for dark beer in Germany, not a particular style of beer. Under those conditions, schwarzbier would be considered a dunkel, but more in terms of a sub-category.

Wouldn't the way to say this be, "Under those conditions, Schwarzbier would be considered 'dunkel'"? Rather than A dunkel.

Akin to me saying, "A Schwarzbier is 'dark' like a Czech Dark Lager".

    or

A Schwarzbier is 'dunkel' just like a Munich Dunkel is 'dunkel', but only the latter is a 'Dunkel'.

I just wanted to see how many I could use the work (D)unkel in a post.

Don't forget -- the noun is always capitalized in German.

I would also recommend the Plank-Bier Dunkler Weizenbock Ale to you.

    Overall:

In one word: EXCELLENT! There is a lot going on in this beer and all of the flavors/qualities play wonderfully together.

I think I tried that one and the hefe before from them. Because of that I didn't know what their lager would be like but it was so so good. I wish I had bought a four pack, now I just want more more more Plank lager.

I saw they did a festbier or marzen last year with b united, I would love to try that one if they do it again.

I was able to find it last year. Plank festbier and tucher festbier were my favorites from last year. It came in toward the end of October.

Thanks for the intel and that beautiful looking picture, fingers crossed I can get some here in NJ. Tucher festbier never got to NJ last year that I saw, I also called around. For now it is actually on the untappd menu for our total wine so a short drive may be in order soon.

I have not figured out tuchers canning codes yet but as you know beware of total wine. Last years tucher festbier came in 4 packs with white plastic holding the cans together. This years tucher 4 packs come in cardboard packaging similar to veltins pilsner. I'm not good a describing what I taste in detail like some of you but the plank festbier taste like someone took ayinger oktoberfest and canned it.

Thank you for the tucher recon @Cstamp3084 as most of us know total wine is notorious for old beer so that is a good bit of info.
