I'm confident that somewhere a brewery is selling an over-engineered beer at a premium because it was "aged on its side".

Or in a cave, on a boat, underwater, at sea.

    Enjoy

When you find that brewery, let me know if they make a barleywine. I'll surely buy one:flushed:

Maybe next time! I would love to see a barleywine box, or at least a mix!

There haven’t been many, but this next box will be only stouts and definitely lots of crazy stuff. Barrel aged for sure, but there will likely be many with other stuff added. These extreme boxes push the limits.

Yep that’s what that was. Never got to try the other years/formats.

Insanity! This is a fantastic barleywine. Very balanced and malt-forward. Cheers!

Last night (8/23/2022) I stopped at Northbound Brew Pub in Minneapolis, MN
Had a full pour of Block Heater. Factory HorsePower rated (overrated?) at 11.6%, 62 IBU
Nice looking beer. Taste: Not what i was expecting. Not very sweet. Some caramel, plus a fruit mix: Dark fruit, cherry and something else. Brandy and port wine. Thin lite body not very malty. ABV is well hidden.
    It's OK

I can't agree with this enough. I think I would have enjoyed SN Bigfoot if I'd let it sit and age longer than a year.

Endolith from Jackie O's. Endoliths are organisms that live in rocks. Interesting name for a barleywine.

I love the sweet elements at work here, but I wouldn't have minded a little something for balance and contrast. Caramelized brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, bourbon, Moravian sugar cake, etc. Kinda one note but it's a pretty one, sung clear and clean.

I suppose I should get around to trying this one. Barrel-aged isn't my favorite concept but balanced and malt-forward sounds like it might work for me.

Oof no fun lol. I did one time have a BW that was intentionally oxidized and it had a slight twangy sour note like that, but it was done nicely

This is the murkiest barleywine I’ve ever had. And I’ve had some 10+ year old ones. I’ve been striking out lately with BWs. This one is decent but really not that great for Spindletap’s reputation

Beerburg Brewing (Austin, TX) Mugwort Barleywine- spontaneously fermented barleywine by this innovative brewery across the street from Jester King. Double dipping on this one - going to also post on wild ale weekend thread!
