Can we start calling them flavor additions or something? Oatmeal absolutely belongs in a stout.

I can echo this sentiment and would also recommend this approach.

I drank my last 4 pack of MMF more slowly than I probably should have, and by the time I got to the last bottle, I could definitely tell the MMF flavors in the beer had begun to fade. Similarly, I drank the last 2019 CBS I had somewhat recently, and the maple flavors there too were starting to fade. KBS Espresso is also best fresh IMO.

Agreed. There’s no reason to. They’re bottled at their peak and should be enjoyed as such.

Barley can never be an adjunct. Oats can. Wheat can. Sugars can. Peanut butter can not.

Im back with another imperial stout tonight. Flo and Ben from Barreled Souls. Named after some puppies that passed away and a peanut enhanced imperial stout. Beer is 11.7% and has no other additives according to the label.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. The beer was bottled on 6-24-2021 and has been in my cellar since October 2021 when I picked it up at the brewery.
the beer pours a black coffee color with a dense yet frothy tan colored head of 1.5 cm. This foam fades to almost nothing but the thinnest edge layer a few minutes after the pour is complete.
The aroma is mostly milk and dark chocolate with hints of a peanut husk scent, but its very mild and I wonder if I sat on this too long. No hops and no booze on the nose, but no peanut really either. : (
First sip reveals a medium body and fine gentle carbonation. Texture is smooth and silky and rolls across my palate, doesnt feel sticky nor leave much feel on my lips or anything.
Flavor is milk chocolate, dark chocolate, toasted malt and a bit of toasted nut flavor buried in the background. Again, not a lot of peanut character here. no hops and no hint of ABV either.
This is a good imperial stout, but lacks the peanut profile I expected. Did it fade? Was it ever there? Im a little disappointed in this one, but maybe it was better on Day 1?

Peanut beers should never exceed a week.
Aged peanut beers should be consumed on the lot of purchasing site
    Coffee beers should never age.
BBA Beers shall never exceed half a year.

    Aging beer is unecessary.
I think it is a byproduct of FOMO and marketing.

I don’t think I’ve ever drank a beer fresh and then aged it and thought it got any better. People who are sensitive to alcohol and/or a stout with adjuncts they don’t really like might benefit from aging as those flavors start to fade/meld. If a stout is already barrel aged though, I can’t imagine it getting better in the bottle especially as most of our available cellar conditions are probably less than ideal. Cheers.

totally agree. i think it’s interesting to see what flavors appear or disappear or develop but i whether a beer is good or bad fresh, it’s most likely not getting any better with age.

I drank it all within an hour. Starting drinking it cold and it had a sort of medicinal flavor( like cherry robitussin) but still loads of dark fruit , roasted malt and dark chocolate in Darkness fashion.
I loved it and will never turn one down .
The last 2 8oz glasses i poured at warmer temp subdued the robitussin like taste . It wasn't noticeable on the nose at all .
    I thoroughly enjoyed .

Cellared for 5 years and probably at its best.
Rum and raisin fudge. Rose water and Genoa cake. Lightly toasted wholemeal bread with chocolate spread.
    Delicious.

I don't share your opinion, but I do agree that barrel-aged beer rarely gets better. I have tasted countless beers that have improved with age. Tons of big stouts (RIS from Stone, Expedition, Black Albert, World Wide Stout), barleywines (Bigfoot, Old Guardian, Old Ruffian, Old Cellar Dweller, Thomas Hardy's, J.W. Lees), and lambic (I personally prefer most lambic with a bit of age, and some are mind-blowing at 5-10 years). Some quads are great after a couple of years. Orval is another that is, in my opinion, much better after a few years. However, every opinion is different!

Stopping by to say hi and thanks for this thread.

Favorite style of mine by a mile. You know why? Because I can barely find some great ones, except online or via trades so rest assured I sip on it until the last drop every time. Maybe I even try to lick the glass? IDK.

I got started in 2016 with Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. What a banger then as I seriously started getting into craft.

Afterwards I got my hands on many Founders, and even the BCBS from Goose island which is as someone said previously their only very worthy beer today.

I won’t name or list all those I’ve had, but I’m thankful for the American traders and the ones I got thanks to European « web shop ».
