Nice. Jackie O's dropped several new barleywines a couple of months ago, did Rye Barrel Brick Kiln or Barley Barge make it out there?

It looks like Rye Barrel Brick Kiln made it to a spot in San Diego (not here). No sign of Barley Barge.

Central Waters two, three, or four year? Barrel aged barleywine. Can #2

#2 Smaller head than number one, darker and a little cloudier. The chocolate and figs are more prominent, the caramel more subdued. The barrel notes have stronger leather and tobacco, less wood. The bourbon is mellow and extremely well incorporated. Candied nuts at the finish. Tasty as hell, not better or worse than can #1 but definitely distinct. 4.6 overall, another sublime offering. Four year is my guess here.

I'll have the last can soon. Damn hard not to peak I tell ya...

I just love this experiment so much. I might just go and throw covers on all of the barleywines in my cellar.

We should do a blind barleywine trade sometime, send everything with labels covered. That could be a hell of a lot of fun actually!

Oh man I love what Cognac/brandy/Armagnac barrels can do! That looks like a fun series to try.

Amazing. I just got a 2 year Stone the Crow on Tavour (it's in my crate). 24 months in port barrels and 26 months in 1792 Full Proof bourbon barrels. Cognac and barleywine, however, is probably the best combo! Cheers!

Try to trade for it if they release it this year. It’s so damn good. Had my one and only can this past Winter and it’s better/as good as anything else I’ve had

It is odd, Sierra Nevada had no shipping limits when I ordered from them.

    Enjoy

Central Waters two, three, or four year? Barrel aged barleywine. Last Can!

#3 poured with a large head similar to can #1, but it didn't last as long. Tons of caramel with bitter, burned edges. The bourbon is assertively boozy with just a little vanilla. The finish adds a nice bitter tingle, hints of grapefruit rind and naked oak. Not much leather or tobacco. My least favorite of the three, though I am enjoying the hell out of it. It just didn't come together quite as well as the other two, it's a bit more brash and unrefined tasting to me. Call it a 4.25. Having had all three now I'm going to stick to my original guesses for the first two and call this the 2-year barrel aged can.

    The results...

Well, I got one right! The first can was 2 years, the second can 4 years (got that one!), the last can and my least favorite was aged 3 years.

Each of these stood out from one another as distinct and they were all great, the 2 and 4 year in particular. I'm glad I took some of my biases out of the equation while trying these since I expected to like the youngest the least and the oldest the most. Now Central Waters needs to blend up a cuvee and sell it in waxed bottles for more than the four packs of cans cost!

What a great barleywine tonight. Charleywine. A barleywine with extensive aging in both French apple brandy barrels and rye whiskey barrels. Part of the El Catador release from Cigar City. Thanks to @Roguer for sending this one!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours dark brown with a tiny layer of head. The nose is full of brandy. Wow. This compliments the subsequent notes of toffee, figs, prunes, tobacco, and vanilla. A bit of oak, and a rye spice come through after the intense wave of brandy subsides. I could just smell this all night. I almost don't want to take a sip for fear of being disappointed. Expectations are high.

The taste doesn't disappoint, but it doesn't quite match the nose. The booze is a bit intense, spreading a burn as it descends down the throat. The brandy is still the main character, but the rye competes here. I can't say that I have ever tried a barleywine aged in both brandy and rye barrels. Great combination. A bitter oaky flavor meets the sweet fruity flavor. Also getting tobacco, a touch of coffee, lots of vanilla, some burnt toffee, raisins, molasses, and figs. Very much a sipper.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice sweet/bitter aftertaste. Overall, a wonderful barleywine. I'm savoring every sip.

Super interesting! I would not have guessed that the 3-year would be the least favorite. Some mystery barleywines heading your way soon!

I figured Dragon’s Milk was a stout line but this guy’s a barleywine according to Craft Beer & Brewing. Definitely seems more appropriate. Following the otter one nicely.

I’m glad that otter was game because it would have been a non-consensual chef’s kiss. Never had anything by either brewery as far as I’m aware, but it reminded me of the Big Lake English barleywine I grabbed on vacation and posted a few weeks back, except with vanilla deftly added on top just adding that extra hhh-nnnnhh. But like in smoothness.

As it goes in #BIL, I wish I’d bought more.
